View 2 RepliesI have to use pppoe because my ISP uses service names, and as far as I know the only program which lets me input a service name is pppoe (inside the pppoe.conf file). Networkmanager is buggy because it tends to disappear from the panel periodically and, worse, it doesn't reconnect (although the option is selected, it does reconnect only once).
So, for peace of mind I open a superuser terminal and enter "pppoe-start" and "pppoe-stop" to have everything I want (reconnects automatically, etc.). Now the question is: how can I have pppoe-start run at startup, automatically, without entering superuser mode, and without having a terminal open for this? Using Debian Testing (Wheezy).
my Conky needed the Coretemp, and a friend of LQ told me to run modprobe, and it works greate! no every time I start my system, I need to run the modprobe to add the module to Kernel. How can I put the coretemp to start every startup? (I think there is somenthing to do with a file on the rc.module at /etc/rc.d/, but I'm afraid to do something stupid...) I want to make the conky running after start of the system. How can I do this?

View 2 Replies View Relatedi run into a very annoying thing, usually take less than a second to connect to the internet using pppoe-start but today after a new installation of slackware 13.1 take a couple of secs to connect.
now:
# pppoe-start
Connected!
usually:
# pppoe-start
. Connected!
i'm using kernel-generic-smp-2.6.33.4, i even rebuilt the rp-pppoe package but it's the same thing. same behaviour was also in the previous release using kernel 2.6.29.6 due the broken forcedeth in that version of kernel, but on ArchLinux using the same version of kernel works normally.
how to execute commands on startup. I've added lines to /etc/rc.d/rc.local, /etc/rc.local, I've put scripts (with extension .sh) into /etc/init.d/ and I've set the executable permission thing on all of them with chmod -x. I *still* can't get anything at all to execute on startup. The truth is, I'm trying to enable multitouch and button tapping automatically when I startup Fedora. I have the commands
[code]...
Which I want to execute whenever I start Fedora (it's a bit tedious to write them every time, or even to have to execute a script myself whenever I start my computer). Furthermore, if I can figure this out, then I can do all sorts of things. Does anyone have a clear, surefire way in which I can do this? I'm not good with using Linux at all
Skype works for me, but there is a small thing i like to solve.
For the x64 version i need to start skype with a bash command so that the video and sound works and i thougth that a simple batch in folder bin would solve it.
So that it gets executed automatically once the desktop loads. Seems it doesn't since i still have to do it manually.
How do i execute a batch automatically upon startup under KDE?
I have create a script to start a server(my first question). Now I want it to run on the system boot and start the defined server. What should I do to get this done? My findings tell me put this file in /etc/init.d location and it will execute when the system will boot. But I am not able to understand how the first argument on the startup will be start? Is this predefined somewhere to use start as $1? If I want to have a case startall that will start all the servers in the script, then what are the options I can manage.
My Script is like this:
#!/bin/bash
case "$1" in
start)
start

i'm trying to automate terminal commands to execute at startup (rc5)one is a background process: Code: xinput set-int-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" "Two-Finger Scrolling" 8 1 the other is a gui application: Code: /home/labr/apps/gmail-notify/notifier.py i placed these commands in /etc/rc.local but does nothing.

View 4 Replies View RelatedIm trying to run synergy on startup. This works fine on the client, but it wont start automatically on the server. I put this line in an entry in startup applications:

but still no dice.
I am trying to run a script which would execute once the system start's up. I placed my script in /etc/init.d and made it chmod +x my-script and placed my script path in /etc/rc.local . It works fine in installed environment and its not working in live cd and USB.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just moved my / from sda1 to an ide drive, hde1. i dont see how this could have caused any of these issues, but it did.
First my network card failed to start. i added a line in my rc.local file (where i put all of my additional programs, etc i want to start):/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1
The above now starts my network card with my static ip configured. dhcpcd also worked but i wanted this static.
Now samba will not start. i have the following line in my rc.local: /etc/rc.d/init.d/samba start
This used to work just fine. at first i thought that samba may be trying to start before my network card gets an ip, but the line is *after* the network startup line. just to make sure, i made an additional script called startsamba which contained a sleep 60 followed by samba start, to delay the startup of samba even further.
The message samba reports is very vague, something like failed - core dumped. most of the core dump log is garbage characters, but here is the beginning which seems like it might contain some info:
Code:
ERROR: Can't log to stdout (-S) unless daemon is in foreground (-F) or interactive (-i) after the system starts, i can drop to a console and type "/etc/rc.d/init.d/samba start" and the service starts just fine. i've also tried starting samba manually with "smbd -d" which also produces the core dump when started from rc.local, but not when started from a console after startup.
I had some command lines that I want to execute them with the server goes up. how can I do that?

I was attempting to setup Oracle 11g on my system using these steps: [URL] had to stop and shut down after the third "segment" of commands:
Quote:
root@luan-laptop:~# cd /bin
root@luan-laptop:/bin# ls -l /bin/sh
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2010-20-04 21:33 /bin/sh -> dash
[code]....
I need one, cause I know this is "So easy, a cave-man could do it" (and I can't) yikes.
I need a start up script to execute AFTER my desktop loads. It's for display resolution. I've added the same script in 3 places, and all will execute, but not until I do it manually. It's being over-written by another function...
1 script in /etc/gdm/Init/Default (as per Wiki page, which has a syntax error I found yesterday):

# -George
[Code]....
Can I create a run level 7, like rc7.d, that will execute after the desktop loads (and everything else)? I symlinked the second script to level 5 rd5.d, and it didn't go through. I haven't tried level 6.
I've just installed subversion.I need to create a script /etc/init.d/svnserve that will start at boot time.I want to use start-stop-daemon --start so I can track my process and eventually kill it using start-stop-daemon --stop.My problem is that I can't get it to work and the documentation shows no exemple.
I've replaced $DAEMON by the whole line: svnserve -d -R -r $REPO_ROOT and got -d is not an option.I'm not quite sure what to do at that point. If someone has some experience with start-stop-daemon it would be great.
I've created a firewall with iptables rules and saved them into my bin directory (then changed them to executable) However i cant use "sudo firewall-start" it just prints a whole heap of garbage. When i use the "sudo firewall-start" command as root, it works perfectly. Im sure there's a simple solution to this problem, but cant seem to find one in the forums.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to setup a webcam surveillance system. Zoneminder didn't work for me regardless of how I tried configuring it, so I gave up and have now settled on a more primitive solution. I've currently got 6 cams and looping streamer (webcam screen grabber) I can grab a picture from each camera with about a 1 second interval. The previous picture is overwritten and using javascript to reload the image continuously in a browser I get the desired "movie" effect I'm after. The problem however is that as soon as I start using streamer on more than two cameras at once I run into this little snag:
Quote:
libv4l2: error turning on stream: No space left on device
ioctl: VIDIOC_STREAMON(int=1): No space left on device
I've been searching around and it seems I need to increase my shared memory. I've done that (tried many different values and "solutions") but the problem remains the same.
My setup is as follows.
1.php (refreshes updated grab from camera 1 every second in the browser)
2.php (refreshes updated grab from camera 2 every second in the browser)
3.php (refreshes updated grab from camera 3 every second in the browser)
etc
etc.
Is it possible to use something like php exec to execute the command that starts 'streamer' that grabs the image from the specific webcam (/dev/video1 for 1.php and so forth) when 1.php is opened in the browser. Is this even possible, or am I just dreaming?
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Two days ago I updated using update manager. After that I can not boot Ubuntu. When I trying to boot system showing message " Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode Your screen, graphics card and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself" But I can not configure it.I can not boot to 'recovery mode' also

Goggles music manager no longer works in my current install. When I first upgraded, it was complaining about ligtag-extras library not existing, but this was because the version got upgraded. So I recompiled, and now it just segfaults, both with the slackbuild version (0.10.14) and the latest release (0.10.19). Here is dmesg:
Code:

I've added mpd to System->Preferences->Startup Applications several times and it always just disappears and of course isn't started. I have used both mpd and /usr/bin/mpd as the command. I have done a log search as follows:
Code:
sudo find /var/log -type f -mtime -5 -exec grep -i -e 'mpd' '{}' +
and nothing significant was found, e.g. an error message indicating that the mpd startup command was removed.
