Slackware :: Firefox 4 Opens As Root
Mar 27, 2011
I got the mozilla FF4, extracted, copied to /usr/lib/firefox, changed the old one to /usr/lib/firefox-3 (I had the 3.03 or something like it) Now,I just can make it work... but just as root! If I am in Konqueror, super user, and click over the firefox it opens Firefox 4, as root. If I open another X, as root, I just need to click the old firefox icon and it opens. As user, there is no way I compared the files from /usr/lib/firefox, the new ones with the old ones in /usr/lib/firefox-3, and the permissions are THE SAME. I even tried to replace the firefox and the run-mozilla.sh, the only difference is that then I can get the update window to appear, but it does nothing and just crash. I didn't touched the /usr/bin/firefox, since it just point to the /usr/lib, and in fact, since it is working as root, in user space and in root KDE,it is OK. I tries first,of course, to get a slack one, but at linuxpackages there is only the FF4 for the newest slacks.

I use Ubuntu 10.04.1. When i write to terminal "sudo firefox" it opens the firefox with the default users config settings. But when i write "sudo nautilus" it open the nautilus with new config settings. This means there is a problem on my system ? (when i open the firefox with "gksudo", it is using as new user (root user's) config files but nautilus is opening with the root user's files also with "sudo").

I have a win7 laptop and installed a dual-boot ubuntu 10.10. I'm using firefox & thunderbird, shared between windows and ubuntu (default profiles are on a fat32 disk that is shared between the two OSs). I can mount the fat32 disk as usual, but I can't get firefox OR thunderbird to start unless I start them from a terminal using 'sudo'. This is kinda strange. I used to do this all the time and never had a problem before.
I installed firefox, then did:
cd /etc/firefox
sudo firefox -P
in the profile manager, I set the profile file etc, but when I open firefox without doing 'sudo firefox', it hangs up and cannot find the profile. Why do I have to use 'sudo' to open firefox or thunderbird?
It works fine on my other laptop, but I've deleted & reinstalled ubuntu 3 times on this laptop and still have the same problem.

When I open 'firefox' from the app panel at the top of the screen, it opens on the last web site visited.
I've looked every place I can think to tell it to open in a blank screen. My preferences are set to blank. Right click on the icon > properties shows 'firefox %u'.
Is there something in 'about:config' that would control this and what do I search for?

Truthfully, I don't know if this is a Firefox bug or not, but I've only experienced this on my Fedora machine.
There doesn't seem to be any particular pattern, and it's happened in trusted sites when clicking on various links (like this one for instance), but Firefox will suddenly go mad and just start opening window after window.
The only way I can get out of it is 'ps -ef' 'ing for the firefox process and killing it.
This has happened under both 10 and 12.

I am trying to run a script that automatically opens Nautilus as root for a certain directory.
# cd /home/abby/Desktop
# gedit go2html.sh
cd /var/www/html
su -c "nautilus ./ &"
# chmod u+x go2html.sh
# ./go2html
The script appears to run but the foreground process closes unexpectedly.

I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 with Firefox 4.0.1. from the firefox ppa. If I want to open the folder of a downloaded file with the right-mouse-button menu, kid3-qt is opened and shows the folder. I already tried the following: Removed kid3-qt -> Dolphin opens the folder, kid3-qt reinstalled leads to the same behaviour as before Reinstalled Firefox -> no change Removed the .mozilla dir to create a new profile -> no change mimeapps.list in ~/.local/share/applications looks like this:

I am putting together a DIY Point Of Sale (POS) system using openbravo pos as the software and openSUSE 11.4 GNOME as the operating system. I am running into difficulty with the cash drawer. It's a UPOS 2020 USB cash drawer and is fully recognised by openSUSE.
My problem is that after I put in the config into openbravo POS is doesn't work. Out of curiousity I decided to run the program as root, redo the config and it now works fine. how I can have my normal user use the device. It's on /dev/ttyUSB0 btw.

Sometimes in BBC iPlayer - Bigscreen the fullscreen video does not open on top, and then none of the lirc remote control commands (irxevent) function, not even Escape (nor Alt-TAB, which would bring the fullscreen on top if I used the keyboard - but sitting in the TV couch I would prefer using the remote only).
This often happens on my SuSE 10.2 partition, especially when wanting to resume a video, but never happens on my Kubuntu 9.10 partition. Both are 32-bit using KDE 4.3.5 Firefox 3.5.8 and Adobe Flash 10,0,45,2.
How can I get the fullscreen on top??

Dolphin will only open Samba shares if I open them by typing in smb://SERVER-IP. It also does not show up in the Network section of Explorer under Windows 7. How do I fix this? The only Samba share icon that shows up in Dolphin under Network --> Samba Shares is Workgroup. If I click it it changes smb://workgroup, but then it does nothing and shows no files. Here is my Samba server's smb.conf file.
Code:

workgroup = WORKGROUP

Firefox opens file listing instead of Nautilus opening file listing. When I access a folder via "Places" -> "Home Folder" or "Places" -> "Downloads", Firefox opens and list the contents of the directory.I have re-installed Nautilus, un-installed Firefox and then going to "Places" -> "Home Folder" or "Places" -> "Downloads" launches Nautilus and I can view the contents normally. Anybody else had this problem with Firefox ? Anybody know how to fix this Firefox problem ?Running Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 64bit.

I use netbeanse as a development suite, but to edit/save file correctly it should run with root permissions. When I do run file or debug them, it launches firefox, but due netbeans have been opened by root user, it tries to open firefox as root also, and it seems to be something that should not do. Either I now upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala and sudo firefox does not work anymore, giving me no errors even from CLI.

This is on RedHat EL 5.2. I extract the tar.bz2 file downloaded from Mozilla's site, and drop it in user/firefox. I try to run Firefox, from a launcher I made, and nothing happens. I use the root terminal, and cd to the firefox directory, and run ./firefox, and it opens. The user owns all of the files and directories, but it still won't work unless I'm root

In Iceweasel, WhatsApp does not properly work, because you can't download images. Oddly, that doesn't happen on Firefox, so I'm considering using it.
As Firefox is not in the repos, I downloaded the tar.bz2 file from Mozilla and uncompressed it at my home. What I don't know is, what will happen when a new version is released? It has the option to autoupdate enabled but... will it be able to do so without root privileges?

I don't use Firefox much, my default browser is Google Chrome. But I've noticed sometimes things like Flash on some sites runs smoother in FireFox. So yesterday I opened up FF because Facebook was giving me some issues, so i wanted to see if it was Chrome or FB. Now, I haven't run FF in a few weeks, and I've noticed a few updates had rolled in for it since my last use.
When I opened FF and went to FB the login page wouldn't display correctly, and in fact would display no text whatsoever except for the links for the Japanese and Chinese FB pages. I assumed it was FB since I was already having issues with it. Later, I tried again and got the same loading issue. So I ran a Google search for FF issues with FB and got the same problem with Google search results, I got the logo and all the little search icons, but no text.
I tried everything I could think of and everything anyone I asked could think of including:
The only thing that I can do to make FF work is run Alt+F2 gksu firefox. That allows it work with out any issues. Has anyone come across this issue or anything similar? I'm including a couple screen shots of what it looks like when it's not working correctly. Note: these pages have finished loading, the text isn't "white on white" it's just not displaying, view source of these pages shows the complete page is loaded including all text it just isn't being rendered.

Running Lucid - was an LTS upgrade from 8.04.
I have a usb webcam (off brand). When installed, /dev/video0 is properly created and I can access the webcam through cheese as a regular user.
Code:
crw-rw----+ 1 root video 81, 0 2010-12-31 16:00 /dev/video0
The regular user is already a member of the video group, and I have checked all permissions under System->Admin->User/Groups->Advanced.
However, when as this regular user, I go to a website that tries to access my webcam via flash (ie, chatroulette or omegle), it does not detect the cam. (Firefox 3.6.13 with Flash 10)
I've already set the LD_PRELOAD as suggested elsewhere.
HOWEVER, if I LD_PRELOAD and run Firefox as root, all works fine and the flash plugin sees the webcam.

Today I installed Slackware 13 because of some issues I'd been having with slackware 9, which I'd gradually updated, but apparently not perfectly, hence the clean install of ver 13. Anyways, I have no sound. At first I thought I had no sound at all, but then I found out that audio does work for root. When I try to run alsamixer as a non-root user, I get this error:
Code: alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory Now if I run it as root though, it works just fine. If I run the KDE system settings thing, what I guess is their version of the windows control panel, and I go to the multimedia section, I can see my card, but if I click test, it says that it's failed and that it's "reverting back to ." or something to that effect.(I'm in fluxbox right now). I would imagine that there's something I need to do with respect to modifying permissions, but I really don't know what that is that I'm supposed to do.
