Slackware :: Failure To Start Apache / Cannot Find Libltdl
Dec 5, 2010
I am new to slackware and linux at all. Today I have installed slackware 13.1 on my PC. Everything seems fine. Furthermore, I successfully installed mysql and edited the http.conf file throughout vim(this was also new to me). I discommented the line where it says "Include /etc/httpd/mod_php.conf" and moreover changed "DirectoryIndex index.html" to "DirectoryIndex index.php".
I assumed that the library "libltdl.so.7" is missing. When I tried to google it, I cannot find a proper version for slackware.I sincerely apologize if I have posted the thread in the wrong section.

I installed it the standard way using emerge/portage, but it fails to start:
Code:
alpha skyer # /etc/init.d/apache2 start
* Caching service dependencies ... [ ok ]
* Starting apache2 ...
apache2: apr_sockaddr_info_get() failed for alpha
apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName [ !! ]
* ERROR: apache2 failed to start
I'm used to have Apache unable to find pc's FQDN, as I don't set it, and it works without it.
From /var/log/apache2/error.log
Code:
[Sat Jul 23 06:41:12 2011] [alert] (EAI 2)Name or service not known: mod_unique_id: unable to find IPv4 address of "alpha"
Computer has IPv4 address set. I suspect that the nature of the problem is in the fact, that alpha has two network interfaces (it is used as router also). I've checked Apache conf files, but didn't find any meaningful directives to set interface or something similar.

I just opened an (unmanaged) VPS account and and have been encountering nothing but problems with trying to get Apache up and running (its something I've done many times before).Basically the inital error was with LDAP not having enough space, so I disabled the related extensions and Apache still would not run. Looking at the log, it contains: (28)No space left on device: Unable to create scoreboard (anonymous shared memory failure)

Before to describe my problem I want to say that I searched a lot on the internet and I think I tried all the solutions provided by other users to similar problems.
I've got an IBM xSeries 346 server running CentOS 5.5 with all updates applied with yum.
The video card is an ATI Radeon (lspci says: 01:06.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE]).
Everything worked fine until a bad day where there was an environmental power failure and the server crashed.
I turned it on, I manually check the file system, some files went lost and after the reboot the X server didn't start.
After the first boot I had problem with /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit, sbin/multipath.static and /dev/cpu/microcode, I solved them and now the message it shows is:
"Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface) It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?"
I choose OK and it appears an empty log, if I go in /var/log/gdm and I do an ls -al:
total 0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 28 04:44 :0.log.4
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 28 04:44 :0.log.3
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 29 04:52 :0.log.2
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 29 04:52 :0.log.1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 29 04:52 :0.log
So a lot of empty log files.
I press enter on the OK that appears at the bottom of the screen and it says: Would you like to try to configure the X server?
I choose Yes, I enter the root password and appears the following messages:
Couldn't start X server on card 0
Couldn't start X server with old config, trying with a fresh configuration
Then another messages:
Trying to restart the X server, I press enter on OK and it loops the initial message ("Failed to start the X server...)

I have an HP pavilion laptop with core i5 4210U that has intel HD4400 graphics. I installed debian wheezy 7.7 after shrinking win 8 and freeing 350GB for debian. I went through the hurdle of making a UEFI bootable USB drive and the system dual boots fine. But once I boot debian, I get all the run time messages and then login prompt flashes and the whole screen is blank except for a prompt on top left. I can open a terminal but that's about it. I'm unable to remotely login (connection refused) from either windows using moba terminal or another debian machine.
I searched the internet and found : [URL] ....
I tried the apt-get but it failed saying:
Code: Select allE: The value "wheezy-backports" is invalid for APT::Default-Release as such a release is not available in the sources
In case I have to install Debian testing version that some said worked, how do I get rid of my current installation, which is UEFI? Do I just erase its partitions in windows? Then what happens to its UEFI boot manager? Just leave it there to rot? If I install again with debian testing version, I envision some problems of the grub UEFI boot manager thinking that the debian 7.7 is still there and try to boot to it. I do have the partition images in partition manager home version 12 so I could just restore the UEFI partition.

I'm running a P4 system with Dual ATI Radeon 2900HD Graphics cards. When I try to install F11, the graphical interface fails to start and I end up in a text install. I've seen plenty of information on how to fix the problem post install, however I'm not nearly advanced enough to then continue the installation (the text install does not install much, particularly doesn't install the graphical interface). Is there a way to work around this (IE a more complete text install, or somehow getting it to install in graphical user interface?)

I am having a RAID5 with a spare(total 4 disk).then the steps which lead me to a problem:
1. i was doing I/O on the array.
2. i pulled out a drive manually. So the spare drive took care of the failed one and started rebuilding. then
3. in the, mean time i pulled out the power plug of my NAS box.
4. After power up i saw my array was not active(by -D command option of mdadm). then
5. i executed: mdadm --assemble --scan /dev/md0 it gave me
I checked into the linux source and found that bd_claim is a function inside fs/block_dev.c and it failing due to which lock_rdev function (calling bd_claim in md.c) is failing and we are not able to start the array.I don't know why my RAID is not live after power on.
Plese help atleast can i save my data?

This post was originally placed in the src2pkg thread, just below.
But to avoid it being overlooked I am placing it in a new thread here.
I am using src2pkg v.2.0 with Slack 13.0 running kernel 2.6.29.6
In the past I used trackinstall to run 'make install' after configuration and compilation (using a makefile). Here's an example
of what happens when I use the current trackinstall that comes bundled
with src2pkg code...

I am able to retrieve data off a RAID5 array. History: My system disk was partitioned to 10 gigs and over time was filled up to 100% locking me out of the GUI (I am a casual user). Now that I am relegated to the CLI, I need help to see if rebuilding the array and keeping the data intact is possible. I have three sata hard drives in the array and now it appears during the boot process, it fails and can't find the array.
I did the following:
mdadm -D /dev/md0
and here's some of the output:
State: active, FAILED, Not Started
And out of three drives, it states that two have failed. I find this hard to believe as I have had no issues until my system disk was full. A coworker today helped me find some files to delete and now have the system disk down to 97%/8.8 gigs yet I can still not enter the GUI due to the array issue.
Out of the three discs, here are the results (taken also from mdadm -D /dev/md0):
Number Major Minor RAID device STATE
0 8 1 0 active sync /dev/sda1
1 0 0 1 removed
2 0 0 2 removed
Sorry for providing so little, but I am in (Repair Filesystem) mode and only have local access to the machine meaning all outputs will need to be retyped.
I am able to do anything to the box as its only purpose was media storage and serving.

I posted this first to thread 'Boot problem - "Gave up waiting for root device.", (initramfs)' then realized that I should start a new thread because the problem is not the same. On boot the splash goes black and nothing happens, On a recovery boot it drops into shell BusyBox and messages indicate that the root partition cannot be found. After booting from CD Gparted GUI partition information shows no label or ssid for the root partition sda2. The data for the root partition appears to be there. how to fix this? My /home, swap, and / are on separate partitions formatted ext3. I have a recent backup only for my data. I would like to avoid having to rebuild my system from scratch.

When I boot, I get BIOS then GRUB. If I choose the XP selection I am taken to a Boot Loader that now longer works. I get an error saying: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing. <windows root> system32hal.dll Please reinstall a copy of the above file.
Can I remove the boot loader and let Grub take me directly to the C:/windows? If so how?

There is a known bug with MySQL 5.1.42 that prohibits the QMYSQL driver from functioning properly. I finally found it on the MythTV bug tracker, which links it to the MySQL site. There is a patch available, but the bug was fixed in 5.1.43. To fix it on my system, I grabbed the all of -current/source/ap/mysql except for the actual source, and downloaded the latest version (5.1.44) from [URL].

I was experimenting in virtual machines this evening with software RAID.I found Slackware's method straightforward and intelligible. The README is excellent. I found software RAID setup in Scientific Linux (RH Enterprise clone) and Debian convoluted and confusing. My only question regarding software RAID in Slackware is how the system notifies you about the failure of one component. I pulled one of the virtual disks offline to deliberately fail the array but I wasn't notified when rebooting. I didn't look too deeply into log files to be honest. Can it be set to automatically notify the admin about a failure?

I've gone through tutorial after tutorial and finally I've given up and I'm resorting to asking the forums. I've got Slackware 13.1 64-bit and I've got a Netgear WG311v3 and I obviously want them to work together! I installed ndiswrapper and I've tried several different drivers from several different tutorials, but I can't get them to work. At first I couldn't get modprobe ndiswrapper to work, but that was because ndiswrapper.ko was in the wrong folder. I moved it manually and executed depmod -a and modprobe ndiswrapper started working.I've gathered all the information I anticipated and I'm going to post it at the end of this. Anything I don't supply that is relevant ask for and I'll try and get it. I'm desperate to get this driver working correctly so I can get back to my life on Slackware. Here's the information:

I just setup sendmail on my server to send emails and it works, now I would like to be able to get an email from mdadm if sometjhing was going wrong. I imagine most raid users have this feature setup.
Right now, I have 7 raid arrays and mdadm starts at boot time. Until now, I used Mr. Goblin's script (http://connie.slackware.com/~mrgoblin/files/rc.mdadm) (thanks Mr Goblin!) to monitor my arrays.
The script is started at boot time from rc.local. I created a small script in /usr/bin that send the following command to rc.mdadm giving me the status of the arrays:
Code:
/etc/rc.d/rc.mdadm status
and it works fine, but this requires me probing the arrays manually by calling the script from the command line. I would like to automate probing every 10 minutes or whatever and if a fault has been detected, I get an email.

I have a brand new installation of 13.37 but I can't seem to get the nvidia-kernel (64 bit only) Slackbuild from slackbuilds.org to build. I have the nvidia driver installed and working on 13.1 so I am not desperate yet: although I thought that it could just be something with the older Nvidia driver so I waited for the updated release but it fails in the same way.I have uninstalled xf86-video-nouveau and installed xf86-video-nouveau-blacklist-noarch-1.txz from /extra.I have also installed libvdpau from SBo. I was working on my Drupal test site (running Fedora 11) when it froze. I had to hold down the power button to get it to shut off. When I booted back up, I received the error message "Your system had a kernel failure" after logging in. When I tried to access my test site's ip address or 127.0.0.1, I get the error message "unable to connect". However, I can access and log into Webmin (version 1.440) at 127.0.0.1:10000. Then I noticed that my Apache Web Server (Apache version 2.2.15) was not started. When I try to start it, I get the error message:"Failed to start apache. I'm using Fedora 11, Drupal 6.2 and Apache version 2.2.15.

Can anyone tell me how to have Apache automatically start when I boot the system (and log in)?
It is a simple home-PC running Fedora and I put Apache on for internal/local use only (so I can get to it from my Windows box).
Right now, I have to su (to root) and run the Apache startup command.
I'd like to have it simply come up when I log-in.
