Slackware :: 13.37 Install Reboots ?
Apr 28, 2011
Can't boot the x64 version of the official install DVD or any mini-image from Alien Bob. Either way, the computer reboots a few seconds after loading the kernel. Running 13.1 x64 on the very same hardware right now. Edit: this system ran Slack 100% stably for about a year, and Ubuntu for a few years before that. I am using it to write this, and have no reason to suspect any kind of hardware failure. memtest passes.
I managed to snap a picture of the screen just before the reboot, here is the end:
Code:
Just as reported by AlleyTrotter below, every installation media I tried for 13.1 hangs right after loading initrd, and every installation media I tried for 13.37 rebooted with the message posted just above. I havent tried all the combinations (official, alien, DVD, CD, x64, x32, USB, PXE), but I tried a lot of them, all with the same consistent results.
I have 4G of RAM, and the workaround provided below by AlleyTrotter (booting with huge.s mem=3700M) worked. That is to say, I booted from the official x64 DVD and was able to log in as root, and everything seemed OK. I did not try to install, though, since I already successfully installed a minimal system from 13.0 media and then upgraded directly to full 13.37. Once again, my system is Dell XPS 630i. I see no reason to post other system specs since I don't know what exactly is at fault.

I'm running a gateway - router pc with slack13 32bit on a pIII PC. I am using huge.s kernel. Apart from a firewall script, I have installed ulog deamon. I am also using the pc as a transparent proxy, a dns cache and a vpn server. So I haven't installed weird stuff. I have not installed X or any desktop environment. I get unexpected reboots however, and /var/log/messages does not state anything, not dmesg does. I am thinking of running a disk test on each disk ( one OS disk and one disk for the squid cache) and a memory test. I am not sure its a hardware issue (like the PSU, disk or RAM) because I used to let this pc ON for several weeks even before I started configuring it... and I couldn't hear anything wrong. Now I get to hear disks spinning down and up again, and even that very first boot sound you hear when you switch on the PC.

IBM 600X Thinkpad, 328 MB RAM
This laptop is currently running Ubuntu 10.04 just fine....if you count running
a bit......slow.
I have heard good things about Lubuntu and that it can speed things up, and that it uses pretty much the same installer as Ubuntu. However, just after I select either TRY or INSTALL (it doesn't matter) the screen goes black and the computer reboots.
A fellow on another forum mentioned he has a IBM 600e with only 128 MB RAM running Lubuntu. The 600e is a lessor form of my 600X, both coming out the same year. So, technically, my 600X should have no problems as they are the same machine, I just have more RAM and a higher Mhz.
I can boot Lubuntu liveCD I burned on a desktop machine just fine so, on the face of things, it looks like the cd is OK.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 8.04 on my pc but every time I select an option to install from the cd, the pc reboots and I go through the same thing again.
I've tried installing within windows but that just installs a folder with Ubuntu in but I can't start Ubuntu up when it's finished installing?

I'm trying to install Debian 8.1 LXDE 64bit on a Toshiba Chromebook cb30 from usb. When I select 'install' the laptop restarts and gets me back to the installer menu. I removed 'quiet' from the boot options and it seems that the reboot happens after initrd.gz is read. I previously installed the 32bit version on the chromebook and the installation process worked pretty much without any issues. I might have added 'mem=1024m' to the boot options, though even if I did, this doesn't do anything to my current attempt.
The chromebook processor according to `uname -a` is x86_64 Intel Celeron 2955U. how I could install the image or start debugging the issue?

I just installed 5.6 using the x86_64 netinstall - all appeared to go well, albeit a little slowly. At the end of the install i rebooted the machine but CentOS won't load. If I select the CentOS option from grub (only other option is 'other') the machine instantly reboots.
Only options selected for install where 'server' and 'server gui'.
Editing the CentOS options shows the following but I've no idea whether this is correct or not (assume it is):
root (hd1,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-238.e15 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb initrd /initrd-2.6.18-238.e15.img

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on a HP Pavilion p6565uk.
My PC is x64 compatible, although ubuntu will not install.
I don't get to any gui, it says ubuntu will continue install in 5 seconds, at 0, nothing happens. The CPU light is flashing, but nothing happens.
After about 10 minutes, it reboots, but when the HP splash screen shows (Before the boot selection screen) it just hangs. I have to do a hard shutdown to boot back up.
I am using wubi for install.

I recently installed Slackware Linux 13.1 , and my Wireless is down. I've only installed 3 Linux disto's on my main laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 , 10.04 , and Crunchbang Linux 9.04 , just had Crunchbang), and they all had the same problem. In all three , I was able to enable Windows Wireless drivers and every thing worked. Now , I'm assuming I have to the same ting in Slackware? Sorry , but I have no idea what my wireless card is. But I know that my laptop is a Dell Insprion E1705. One last thing , I did ifconfig and that wlan0 is my Wi-Fi interface. I typed ifconfig wlan0 up to see if that was the problem. After I did that , I got and error message. Then I typed ifconfig wlan0 down to see if it was down and it made wlan0 down. I tried bringing it up again , but I got an error saying it couldn't find the device specified. Also , how do I install XFCE? I really don't like KDE for some reason and would like to install XFCE. I chose XFCE over GNOME (my favorite) because I want to try something new.

I'm trying to install Puppy 525 on my Slackware 13.37 PC as a dual-boot using LILO. Puppy is living, all on it's own, in sda6, a 6 GiB partition. It got there by using the Puppy Universal Installer and selecting a 'Full' install, not a 'Frugal' install. I cannot find 'LILO' type instructions, only 'GRUB' type instructions.
Has anyone succeeded in doing a hard drive install of Puppy with the LILO boot loader?
Edit: I'll probably regret it, but I used Puppy's GRUB installer.

I'm interested in seeing what others are doing w.r.t. fonts in a standard Slack install. The 2 main apps I use are Firefox and Thunderbird and both look fairly poor out of the box. Previously I've used a combination of gtk-qt-engine and gnome-appearance-properties ( with a gsb install ) but this doesn't always do the 'right thing'.

The system requirements for ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 for Linux are: Red Hat, Ubuntu, Debian, SUSE, Fedora, Mandriva, and most RPM and DEB Linux desktop distributions. Can this be installed on Slackware? I tried the download and install. Its says that after the install you need to reboot and an 'activate' application will start - it didn't. I used ESET in my prior Windows life and it was great so I thought, why not in my linux life!

As Pat stated in the Changelog, Slackware-13.1 don't ship the nouveau X driver (yet). But it's not hard to get it either.
1. Upgrade your kernel to 2.6.34
2. Get and install the driver:
Code:
git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/nouveau/xf86-video-nouveau/
cd xf86-video-nouveau
./autogen.sh
make
[code]....
PS. There is no source tarball yet for this driver. If you want to upgrade:
Code:
cd xf86-video-nouveau
git fetch
git rebase origin
[code]....

I have a 10.10 machine where it has taken to refusing to logout of one specific user account. When I choose logout/restart/whatever from the possible options, it takes me to the main login screen (with the drums) and it shows thet that user is still logged in. The only way, once this occurs, to rid myself of this is to sign in as an administrator and run shutdown -r 00 under sudo. Then it reboots. (Using the admin account to choose restart/shutdown also returns me to the mail login screen where that unpriv'd user is still logged in.) (The machine is fully up to date.)

I'm having an issue with a PC ( Gateway GT5220 ), with Ubuntu 64 bit 8.04 installed. There was Vista originally installed in it.
Now, every time I execute shutdown from GUI or command line, the PC reboots and never shuts down on its own, I have to keep pressed the power button for a few secs to power it off. It's very irritating and I don't know wether it's a Ubuntu or a BIOS issue.

(Background: my wireless worked fine for a long time using wicd-1.6.2.1 and then all networks became hidden. The wicd website said there was a bug in 1.6.2.1 and to upgrade.) I obtained wicd-1.7.0.tar.bz2 from sourceforge.net. Slackware man pages recommend "installpkg <name>". I did "removepkg wicd..." and then install. Installpkg said it could not install it because it did not end in .tgz,.tbz,.tlz, or .txz. I changed the name to wicd-1.7.0.tbz(assuming that was equivalent) and did installpkg again. That gave "Verifying..., Installing..., Warning: package has not been created with 'makepkg'. Package wicd-1.7.0.tbz installed."
There is no entry for it in the Kickoff Application Launcher. There is an entry for it in /var/log/packages. There is in /etc/rc.d./rc.wicd a script marked executable. Can anyone see what got lost?

I wish to do a fresh install of Slackware without KDE. I could use my Slackware 13.1 DVD but I thought, why not give -current at try? Is there a -current ISO or must I install 13.1, without KDE, and then upgrade to -current? Or, is it possible to remove 'all things KDE' and then upgrade to -current?

It looks like a little wired. The commands it cannot find such as cp, basename and so forth are system standard ones. How cannot the installation app find?

I've had this problem bugging me for quite a while now, even in F12. What happens is that while using Firefox to browse certain sites that use java Fedora suddenly crashes and the computer reboots. I previously used openjdk, now recently i've installed Sun java (as shown here [URL] - both on F13 i386 & x86_64. I even did a clean reinstall of F13 but nothing changed. For example when I go to this site - [URL] after a while (not more than 30 seconds) Fedora crashes and pc reboots. Hell, it has even crashed a few times while browsing this forum. When I disable Firefox java plugin (from add-ons ->plugins) it still crashes after a while. For the particular site I've looked up that several ad-related javascripts are being loaded (also on fedoraforum). I really want to use Fedora but I just can't do it like this. Is there a way to make it usable?

24" intel iMac , 4gb ram, fully updated.
I have installed amd64bit 10.04 for some reason the system will reboot without warning. I can not see any issues that point to any major problems in the logs.
All hardware appears to be working well although i have not yet tested the built in web cam.
Are there any extra debug log settings i can switch on to try and track down whats causing the reboot.

Prior to this version of ubuntu my laptop (an old P4 gateway) shut down just fine. It acted fine in windows xp, and ubuntu 9.04, 9.10, and 10.04. Starting with my first shutdown after upgrading to maverick (as opposed to a fresh install, which is what I've done for every time I went to the new version before this), it just reboots the computer instead of shutting down.I've tried clicking the icon in the corner, I've tried pushing the power button and clicking shutdown on that screen, I've even tried shutting down from the command prompt, but each of these just reboots the computer.

I am trying to write a script to add to crontab that I can use to auto update my system a couple times a week.I've done that much before, but I want to make the script a bit smarter about rebooting. Before I had it reboot after running the "apt-get upgrade" command, regardless of whether it needed to or not. Easy peesy stuff, just a sequential command using "&&".What I would like to know at this point is how I can have the script look to see if the reboot is even necessary. I am assuming there is something I can tell the script to look for in an if statement, but I'm not sure what or where. Can anyone point me in the right direction for this?
