Server :: Restoring A Postgres Database?

Jun 9, 2010

We have a disaster recovery solution for our database where a dump file is generated daily at 1:00 AM. We have tested importing the file, along with running another sql file that generates the appropriate database user accounts, into a database on a third-party server.

One question that came up was the following: Suppose the database crashes in the middle of the day, prior to that there were transactions that were entered into the database between the time the dump file was generated, and the crash occurred. We can restore the dump file to either the main or backup server. How can the transactions that were made between the time of the dump file and the crash be restored as well?

General :: Restoring RedHat Enterprise Server X64 5.4?

Jul 11, 2011

at work place I have an HP ProLiant DL580 with RedHat Enterprise Server 5.4 x64. Today I cloned this machine using clonezilla. What I would like to do is restore the image to VMWare machine for personal purpose (I cannot perform tests on production machine). But after restoring on VMWare I got "Kernel Panic". That's normal due to different hardware.

Now, is there a way to remove the Kernel Panic and correctly boot the machine? I ask our tech department for the RedHat CD1 to enter the "linux rescue" enviromnent, then try to re-read the hardware list with

# chroot /mnt/sysimage

Ubuntu Servers :: Remotely Restoring A Server Using An Image And The Dd Command?

Apr 18, 2010

I'm getting ready to deploy a Ubuntu server in a remote location. I am deathly afraid of something going horribly wrong though, so what I'd like to do is be able to somehow image the system when it's working, and be able to restore that remotely via SSH if things go to hell. My first thoughts were that I could partition the hard drive, and install two separate instances of Ubuntu. One would be the server in it's working state, and the other one would be a separate instance of Ubuntu that I could boot into to restore an image (if that's possible).

1. If I had two separate instances of Ubuntu on two separate partitions, and I was currently booted into one of them, would it be possible to tell the Ubuntu server to reboot and boot into the other instance of Ubuntu on the other partition over SSH? (SSH is the only form of access I will have to the server)

2. Is there a better way to remotely restore a server than what I outlined above?

3. Also, I've used the dd command to make backups before, but it copies an entire hard drive byte for byte. Is there an argument I can tag on, or another command to use altogether that will only copy the bits that are being used?

Fedora Networking :: Samba Guest Account With Password Of 'guest'?

Mar 16, 2009

I have a local file server running Samba on Fedora 9. It's already configured and serves a few people without any problems. I am now trying to set up a new read-only share with the username 'guest' and the password 'guest'. However, with no success so far! If I log on as 'guest' with the password 'guest' like so:

Code:

su - guest
No problem. Once logged in, if I try:

Code:

smbclient //samba/share

I'm prompted for a password. If I enter 'guest' I get:

Code:

If I enter nothing (null) I get:

Code:

OpenSUSE :: Virtualbox Guest Additions: Set A Shared Folder In 11.2 Guest

Mar 4, 2010

OpenSUSE installed in a Virtualbox Virtual Machine and I want to set a shared folder.

1 - Set up a Virtual Machine and install OpenSUSE 11.2

2 - Create a shared folder on host (HostFolder)

3 - Setup the shared folder in Virtualbox Via the Virtual Machine details or via Devices > Shared Folders...

4 - Install dependencies for running the Virtualbox installer You need to install the right development kernelpackage for your machinetype (use 'zypper search -i kernel' to see what's installed) sudo zypper make gcc kernel-source kernel-hosttype/default-devel

5 - Run the Virtual Machine and go to Devices > Guest Additions This mounts an iso image in your OpenSUSE guest.

6 - Open a root terminal and run

cd /usr/src/linux
make oldconfig && make prepare && make scripts && make dep
cp ../linux-obj/$HOSTTYPE/default/Module.symvers .
make prepare

* A commenter on previously mentioned thread says this step is unnecessary but it doesn't work without on my system. I suggest trying step 7 first and returning to step 6 if that fails. *

7 - Run ./VirtualboxLinux yourhosttype .run from the mounted iso image.

8 - Create shared folder in OpenSUSE (GuestFolder)

9 - Test with sudo mount -t vboxsf HostFolder /home/user/GuestFolder It works? Great! Let's set up the system so it automounts for your regular useraccount instead of root-only access.

10 - Add this line to /etc/fstab HostFolder /home/user/GuestFolder vboxsf defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0

11 - It works for me but if it still doesn't automount after a reboot; sudo mount -a

Fedora :: Installing Guest Additions Virtualbox 13 Guest?

Jun 3, 2010

I had a lot of trouble installing Guest Additions within the Fedora 13 Guest on a Linux host. I had to mount the vboxGuestadditions.iso from the Device --> CD/DVD Devices menu. Then I located the appropriate package for my system. In my case it was the AMD64 Linux version.I ran this as administrator in Terminal. I used the "bash" command followed by the package name. This was after CDing the the appropriate directory. The packaged installed, I then rebooted and it worked fine. (Something that would make this easier is to load a script into nautilus that would allow me to open a locatation as administartor at the open window. I'm sure there is something in Fedora to do this but I couldn't find it in a hurry so I used the command line way).

I used to be able to access the web server I had running on my guest OS in Virtual Box from my host OS. I also had it set to the network settings of "Host Only Adapter". Then I needed to access the internet directly on the gues OS, so I changed my settings on the guest OS to "NAT" (in virtual box), and in /etc/network/interfaces, I removed the loopback stuff and the static IP I'd put in. CentOS 5 Server :: Xen Guest Won't Boot After Update / Solution For This?

Dec 21, 2009

I'm experiencing some rather severe problems after updating my Centos 5.4 system (Virtual Xen guest). What happens is that when the system boots it complains about missing .so files which prevents about 50% of the services installed from running.
I'm suspecting that it has something to do with selinux for two reasons: 1. The first services to go down complains about the security context of some files, and 2. selinux was kinda the reason I decided to update in the first place as it was disabled when it shouldn't be (enabled in system-config-securitylevel, disabled when running sestatus).
The whole boot-sequence ends with alot of "INIT: Id 'X' respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes"-messages (including all runlevels) before it goes stale, and I can do nothing.
The server in question had undergone very little tinkering from my part, pretty much none at all, the only services installed after installation was apache, mysql and webmin.

Details:
CentOS 5.4 is installed on both the host and guest.
The guest runs on an lvm-partition.
I have two other vm's(also CentOS) running just fine, altough I'm a bit weary of updating them .

Attached are some screenshots of the boot-process.

I hope some one here can share some insight on this problem. It's making me pretty nervous seeing that our whole network is run by CentOS-installations (not that I'm certain that CentOS is the culprit).

The guest os has full access to the network including lan/wan but the host os can only reach my lan and not the wan. This is true even when the guest machine is powered off?I have to admit that my knowledge of networking, particularly with respect to linux is very flakey but surely if the guest has internet access this should also apply to the host? My only suggestion is an issue with mac addresses but i don't know where to start. Has anybody ran into this problem before?

Networking :: QEMU: Tap Host: Windows 2003 Server - Guest: Ubuntu 9.04 - No Ip Address And Can't Access Public

Oct 28, 2010

host is windows 2003 server 64-bit
guest is ubuntu 9.04 server 64bit
Qemu : 0.11.1
Qemu manager: 7.0

from Qemu manager, if network card is using User Networking, it's a NAT and I can see that Guest Ubuntu has an ip address 10.0.2.15 and is able to access the internet. However, as Guest ubuntu is running server so I want to do use Tap networking and I assue with Tap, the Guest ubuntu will get an ip address which is in the same subnet as host machine by dhcp. so from Qemu Manager 7.0, I changed Network card to be:

NE2000PCI
Vlan Number =0
VLAN Type: Tap Networking
Mac address: tap0's mac address from host
TAP Network Adpator: Tap0

Note that tap0 was created by openvpn. and then fired Ubuntu guest, ifconfig shows no ip address on eth0 (which has the same mac address as Tap0) so the guest Ubuntu has no ip address and can't access public.

Server :: Apache Authentication: Allow LDAP Group OR User Named Guest But Not All LDAP Users?

May 25, 2011

I am using RackMonkey to map out my lab. Unfortunately, due to RM limitations, every user who accesses the site has write access UNLESS they are logged in as a user named "guest". I currently have Apache allowing only the users (sysadmins) in an LDAP group access to RM, but I would like to allow read-only access for other users as well.I found mod_authn_anon, but I am having trouble combining the two authentication methods. I am using Apache 2.2.18 (compiled myself) on SLES 11.1.

This is the common part:

Code:

AuthType Basic
AuthBasicProvider ldap anon
Order allow,deny
Allow from all

This part by itself works for the LDAP authentication:

Code:

AuthName "System Admins"
AuthLDAPURL "ldaps://example.com/ou=ldap,o=example.com?mail" SSL
Require ldap-group cn=SysAdmins,ou=memberlist,ou=groups,o=example.com

This part works by itself for guest access:

Code:

Anonymous guest
Anonymous_VerifyEmail Off
Anonymous_MustGiveEmail Off
Anonymous_LogEmail on
Require valid-user

But if I have both of the previous blocks enabled at once, then guest access does not work. If I throw in a "Satisfy any", then I am not prompted for a username at all. How can I allow access to this LDAP group and to a user named "guest", but not allow all valid LDAP users to log in?

CentOS 5 Server :: CentOS 5.5 Guest In VirtualBox / Less Memory Available Than Configured

Aug 27, 2010

I just ran into a weird problem with a CentOS 5.5 64-bit server running VirtualBox 3.2.8 (I would run Vmware Server 2.0.2 if not for the well known fact that Vmware doesn't care about its Server line anymore and it doesn't run on CentOS > 5.3 without major splits). I currently have two guests in that VirtualBox setup, a CentOS 5.5 64-bit and a Fedora 13 64-bit. The CentOS 5.5 guest shows less memory available than configured. If, for example, I give the virtual machine 512MB of memory the guest OS only recognizes 380MB. If I give it 768MB it only recognizes 637MB, and so on. I don't have that problem on the Fedora guest - 1024MB configured, 1024MB available.
