I have 4 VMs on a Linux host, call them A, B, C, D running on Z. I really don't care when A and B come up, but I would like to make sure that D comes up before C.I believe that in VMWare 2.x it's possible to change the boot order. Is this possible in 1.x as well? Is this done in /etc/vmware/vm-list? I see that there are a number of VMs listed there, including some that have long since been deleted.

I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.
I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/
I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.
How can I change default boot order in Ubuntu 10.04 from Ubuntu to Windows7? However, I already checked sudo gedit /etc/default/grub and modify the grub file to be GRUB_DEFAULT=4 and update the grup sudo update-grub I even install graph software to re order the book sudo startupmanager But still after restart the default choose for boot is Ubuntu ...

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu on one of my partitoins. Sinec I am new, I formatted that partition to install a different type. Now when I boot my machine, instead of booting to my Windows partitoin, it boots to my blank Linux partition and gives me a Linux prompt.
I can boot from the Ubuntu DVD, by changing it in my BIOS, but I can't change the boot partition order within Linux (that I know of).
I'm working with an employer as part of a college internship. I work on anyone's computer that brings it in. Some lady brought in a macintosh. I'm not here to give my opinion on evil, controlling corporations, but I can't figure out how to get the thing to change boot order.
It has an old and unsupported version of OSX, it's "panther" and I can't even install any firefox after 2.0. It has 256mb ram and a 1.8ghz single core so I thought to dual boot it with debian.
-Tried holding "C"
-Tried holding "option key" (alt)
-Tried holding command (windows) + option + shift + delete
-Went into system prefs and chose "startup disk" but it doesn't list the CD drive at all.
The bios, or whatever it is, is completely blank at startup besides an apple logo.
I wanna change the boot order, right now Linux starts first, and I wanna configure GRUB to make Windows start first, how can I do this?

It boot into gnome successfully. But it will not boot into CLI mode and recovery mode. While boot into CLI, It is stucked in a blank screen, no cursor, after long long boot log splash in the screen.
To boot into CLI rather than gnome, I just set default.target into multi-user.target for systemd. I checked the syslog for boot into CLI, found that systemd execute getty 1~6, but it seemed to no success log and it seem to no other log for systemd. Is it failed to getty?
I check the grapyical.target and multi-user.target in systemd, find multi-user.target is the only one target required by graphical.target. Multi-user.target can be execute successfully during boot into graphical mode, while it will not be successfully execute during boot into CLI mode. That's is so unpredicted. Is there something else I missed?
I have a new public mail server running under Vmware Server 2.0 installed on Windows Server 2008. I'm not satisfy about performance, virtual machine has got 3gb of ram and 2 virtual cpu. Physical machine has got one intel xeon cpu 2.4ghz quad core, 8 gb of ram and 3 hdd 500gb raid5. I already set this option: Fit all virtual machine memory into reserved host RAM. How can I increase performance? Are there any kernel build for virtual installation?

I've googled how to do this but the topics of other people with the same 'problem' were old or maybe incorrect. Because the official GRUB Ubuntu wiki says you should not change the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file manually. The first line on the .cfg file is also a warning: Do not edit this file. So it continued looking for a proper way to change the boot order. Then I found something about etc/grub.d and also etc/default/grub. The problem is I don't understand how to change the boot order using this.

Open your terminal and type in the following:
sudo apt-get install startupmanager
When that is done go to your control panel and you'll have a new icon that says Startup Manager. Every thing you'll need work with your GRUB menu.
I have a dual-boot setup in which Ubuntu 10 LTS is the default choice on the menu, followed by 2 or 3 alternate choices and finally Win 7. I would like to know how to change that order, making Win 7 the default. Solutions I've looked at mention editing menu.lst in the /boot/grub directory, but this file does not exist anywhere as far as I can tell. There is a /boot/grub/grub.cfg but it's unclear how that alters the menu sequence.

USB drive shows up on the VMware console window as part of my devices, like CD/RW drive, etc. But for the usb drive, it is GREYED OUT./proc/partitions never shows a USB device upon connection of the drive. I have tried googling this to death and found no solution that works.

Host: IS able to ping guest. Firewall is OFF. NOT able to access guest (which is a web-server) at browser.
Guest: NOT able to ping host. Running a web server, you can check the website: (pegajosa.com) is running under that virtual Linux server.
Problem: guest needs to access host's sql database and/or any resources.
Network: is bridged.

Centos 5 was set up for me on my server with VMware and XP SP3 as a guest. I have little to no knowledge of centos (or anything Linux) so i tend to leave well alone but i am trying to get a USB printer to work from my networked pcs through XP - Through VMware - Through Centos5 to the USB port on the back of my server. I am reasonably OK with XP but am not a techie so will probably need to be walked through this.
I can see the printer appearing on Centos' equivalent to device manager and when i print everything seems ok with the XP print queue clearing after a few seconds but nothing prints. At a guess i need some sort of software bridge- (is this SAMBA?).
Dual booting Windows 7 and Fedora 15. What I would like to know is if I can change the boot order to boot Windows 7 first and Fedora 15 as other or second.

During an Ubuntu session I was prompted to upgrade, which I did, but when I boot up now, there seems to be 2 versions of Ubuntu which I can choose from the boot up menu, plus the usual mem test, safe mode etc, plus the option to boot Windows 7.
Firstly, is there in fact more than one Ubuntu image (and therefore precious disk space taken up), how do I find out, and if so what action should I take?If there is only one Ubuntu and one Windows 7 image, how do I edit (and where is the file) to change the boot order and the various boot selections?
I have annoying problem. My setup is the following: debian Linux, 64 bits, VMWare workstation 7 host, with Windows XP running as guest. From Firefox, or Internet Explorer, I am unable to access few sites, for example nvidia.com, osdir. Basically get connection timed out, on the other hand ping works to those sites. Moreover, Slashdot loads very very slow and sometimes gets horrible text-only version.

I suspect it has something to do with routing on Linux, I recall having similar problem long time ago, which was fixed by setting something in /proc.
I tried setting MTU and TCP window size on Windows lower, but did not help
I have RHEL 5 installed on VMware 6.0 and the host OS is Windows 7. My Host is connected to internet using a wireless connection and works on shared IP. It has worked great for email and some net surfing. Now the machine is going to my wife, who does not want have to go to the boot menu to get XP. How do I change the order so that XP boots first and you have to go to the menu to get Fed 11?
