Server :: Finding A Method For Backing Up A VPS Server?
Sep 17, 2010
What is the best method for backing up a VPS server? (A guest instance). I'm assuming you can't copy the image file while the VM is active. And if you stop the VM you have downtime.
At my work, we have an ISP that provides us with 2 connections with different IP addresses but at the moment they don't switch automatically if one fails, and can only work for outbound traffic.I tried to automate this with floating routing table on a CISCO 1711 router but then switching to the second link only happens when there's no longer a signal on the cable that's plugged into the router's interface directly -- and the failure most often happens somewhere in the middle. And that also does not make us available from outside.
Can anyone suggest a better way? Maybe an outside DNS server can have a second IP address recorded for our domain name?I found somewhere suggestions that a loadbalancer could solve that but these appliances are way too expensive.I also thought about using BGP but my router's RAM (128MB) is too small for the global routing table that BGP requires. And I also need an ISP (or better 2 ISPs) that provide BGP service. Before trying to convince others that we need to invest more into this, I'd like to know whether there are no easier ways.
I have a Samba server on a computer. I would like to backup the Samba files on a different computer that is a client in the Samba server network. I can easily drag and drop the Samba files onto the client. I would like to automate this process, and accomplish this using an update copy versus a copy full. How can I accomplish this as bash script? I had no luck using the 'cp' command.
I've been running my little server at home for a few months now, and I've noticed that Webmin has detected that I'm in need of over 100 updates. I'm a bit scared to run the updates because everything is working just fine right now, but a part of me still wants to run some of the updates. Now I know backing up the server would be a good idea to do before this happens. This server is a media server with videos, music and pictures taking up the majority of the hard drive space on the server. I just have one partition on the server, outside of the swap partition. I would like to back up everything on the server except the videos, music, and pictures, because if even an update messes with the server, I could always retrieve those, and the external hard drive I'm going to back up to wont be big enough to hold everything anyways.
if I were to backup up everything except for those directories that hold my videos, music, and pictures, and something were to go wrong, if I were to restore all of those, would I then be back to the state my system was at when I backed up? I've never done a back up and restore in a linux environment before. I just want to make sure that just doing that will be enough, because the last thing I want to do is hose my server after taking several weeks to get it to the working state that its at.
how would I backup a specific package. Really all I want is the configuration files.
the package I'm talking about is mumble-server, could I say rsync all the files that were installed, then if I wanted to drop it in just copy those back over?
If I had to wipe the installation and reinstall, could I install that package again then drop my backup copy back over it?
have had a server running for a very long time using Ubuntu Server 7.10, and I think it's passed time that I upgraded.I'll be installing fresh, and I've already backed up /var/www (as well as a home directory with a few files)I've only used this as a Web / SFTP / file server. Might there be any other directories that would be good to backup? I set it up so long ago and have made a few changes along the way.
I have an Ubuntu server running Lucid. I'd like to be able to back up the hard drive in the server to an external hard drive. I try to plug in a drive via a USB port and it doesn't appear to mount automatically, as it does on the desktop version. Questions: 1) What/where should I be looking for to see if the drive is mounted? (I've looked in /dev and /media; no dice.) 2) What's the mount command I should use to manually mount the external hard drive? 3) What backup commands or programs, other than rsync, are recommended? (Nothing against rsync.)
I cant update php in my RHEL Server 5.1 using yum. I am using RHEL Server 5.1 and I cant use yum to upgrade my php. Other site told me that use wget to solve this problem. How to use wget to upgrade php? This is my first time to handle linux server..
My laptop is quite narrow and as such I'm finding that Ubuntu's two pannels are taking up too much space for my computing activities.found a suitable method of getting all the relevant stuff onto one panel, much as in the way other distros do?
I'm looking to setup a home server for the purpose of backing up and storing the files on our multiple (Windows) computers. What kind of server should I set up? Samba? Lamp?
i am wanting to put a list of common passwords on a usb stick, but i want the file to be password protected. I also need to be able to access it from more than one computer (all linux, maybe a mac too).
Desperation has set in and hence you get to view a thread with this title. I think the title explains it all. Or, what can be done when packages are no longer available through the repository but installing them from RMP is boarder line crazy.
We have a production web site running apache 2.2.3 across several web servers. we also have a major problem with SPAM comments right now. our method of identifying valid IPs (whether by external clients/customers, or internal personnel) vs SPAM'ers is not ideal - its prone to erroneously labeling legit IP's as targets to be blacklisted.
What we need is.. a way to see how much distinct request traffic is coming from any given IP address to the site in real time (or very near realtime). Essentially we want to see in some graphic/chart way requests per sec to apache / per ip sorted by requests per sec.Would nTop do this? I've only used this in a limited form at a branch office, not on a production web server.
I do not have any shares setup on my home network so this has never been a big deal to me. My mother finally took enough interest in my operating system to allow me to dual boot 3 of her computers. Everything was up and running like a charm and then she asked "What about connecting to the file server?"
I click on "network" under nautilus and start clicking around - no where in here is the file server that every Windows system on the network can see (5 or so other systems with xp/vista/7 on them - so I know the share works). A small bit of time and some command life foo later I had hunted down and manually mounted the share and added and fstab entry for the drive so my mother would never have to go through that on her own.
That being said - did I do things the hardway here? Can someone please tell me there is an easy method that successfully detects and connects to samba shares without having to resort to CLI? Personally I do not mind doing this, but it is an issue when I am installing Linux for a beginner.
What is the best method for debugging the booting process? Is there a cheatcode (tried debug and failsafe). Slackware 13.1 with standard linux kernel 2.6.35.8. I having a problem with a dell server 2860 booting my build. It is hanging on
[Code]....
Booting my previous kernel 2.6.27.27(different disk with different initrd.gz) it loads the same as above but continues with
Code: loading iSCSI transport class v2.0-870 iscsi registered transport tcp I'm stumped it the problem is with the ata_piix module or the iSCSI transport module or some firmware I might be missing. I booted other pcs without issue.
If i have files called, "hello123", "hello?","hello1" and "hellohoware" in the system and I want to list only the file "hello?" with the "find" command, how do I do it ?

Where does x2go log the time at date of client logins? or dosnt it log anything? i have searched far and wide, and even contacted the x2go dev mailing list, but i have found no answer anywhere.
I'm trying to set up Apache Tomcat with virtual hosting. I've used Caucho Resin before but not Tomcat...and I've run into what appears to be (from Google at least) a rather common problem with Tomcat in that any properly packaged classes under WEB-INF of the default virtual host or the named host are not found and Tomcat complains of a class that "cannot be resolved to a type". I researched this error on Google and the consensus seems to be that: -
- You need properly packaged classes as classes in the default package are no longer allowed. I have done this.
- You need to either fully declare the packaged class to make an instance of it within the JSP or include the via an import statement at the top of the JSP. I have done this.
- In the web.xml for the Tomcat server instance (under $CATALINA_HOME/conf/web.xml) you need to set the servlet mapping for JSPs fork init-param to "true". I have done this also.
Yet the problem persists and I have found no solution. So I can only assume I'm missing something obvious and fundamental. My configuration is as follows: - I have two virtual hosts - one as the default virtual host and another as a named virtual host.
$CATALINA_HOME/webapps/localhost <--- Default host. $CATALINA_HOME/webapps/www.easicasino.com <--- Named host. The logic being that the URL IP address of the server will hit the default webapp and the URL hostname with hit the named webapp. This appears to work with just JSPs.
My $CATALINA_HOME/conf/server.xml looks like this: -
I use a Ubuntu headless home server to store the family data (docs, photo, mp3, movies, ...). Since it's a headless server I'm using mainly webbased admin tools. Now I'm looking for a tool to organize my mp3's. Functionality should include tag editing and renaming of mp3's. Playlist management or mp3 player is not needed.
Would like a command line list of commands, that I can print out, I know this would be allot of pages. I have tons of books and the net, but its a royal pain searching for the right command, need something I can flip through.
I have a situation where I have several screen (/usr/bin/screen) sessions running. 2 of the screen sessions (ps1 and ps2) run a script that launched SipP with specific parameters. 1 script starts SipP and has it make 50 calls where the other makes only 20 calls. However The script is configured where we can change how many calls it makes if needed.
So the problem is, due to issues with SipP, we must restart everything every 12 hours (at maximum). So I am trying to work out scripts to stop the SipP processes cleanly. In order to do so I need to figure out which SipP process is spawned by which screen. i.e. which sipp was started by screen session ps1, and which one was started by screen session ps2.
Now I can do ps -ef | grep <number of calls configured> to find out but then I would have to change my stop script every time we reconfigure how many calls are made, and have a separate stop script for each screen session. I would much rather be able to send the screen name as a parameter to the stop script and have it work no matter how many calls SipP is configured to make. Also your standard kill -1 <PID> does not shutdown SipP cleanly. So working out those details is a bit more tricky. Anyone know how I can determine what processes are spawned from a specific screen session?
I have a server (RHEL 4.7) with an mqueue that keeps growing over a two or three day interval. Then I have to manually flush the queue by removing all the mail in the spool directory as the sendmail flush command doesn't work. I've looked at the mail queue manually with a sendmail -bp command and it seems to show an occaisional mail item in the queue. On the other hand, there seems to be a lot more non-legitimate emails in the queue spool. how do I find out the source of the email in the main queue? Next, how do I stop it from building the queue? Next, is there anyway to automatically flush the queue once it builds if I need to?
I need to establish an FTP server- one with VSFTPD & one with sFTP having at least 300 users in both. My question is what minimum hardware configuration should I go for both to have excellent performance.
