CentOS 5 Server :: Openssh 5.8p2 - Transfer Data From Other Server Through Scp It Gives Connection Refused?
Aug 1, 2011I have configured openssh 5.8p2 with centos 5.6. My sftp is working fine with chroot environment but i am having problem with SCP. I am dealing with muliti Redhat servers. When i try to transfer data from other linux server through scp it gives connection refused. For e.g ssh 5.8 is configured on new server and i want to transfer files from old server which is using openssh 4.3 version.i created same username and password on new server as on old server.My sftp users on new server has no shell access but only sftp access. When i try to scp from old server to new server it gives error connection refused. Is the below configuration only for sftp and can't scp? According to google the configurations i found are for scp and sftp. Do i need to generate ssh keys by giving users on new server shell access, once created then stop shell access again, as i dont want to give shell access permanent for security reasons? but i want to use ssh keys for more security as well.

Now while installing, I had 2 Hdds. at the time of partitioning, i used both as separate Hdd and made a /backup. I used that for my backups. That was RH9. Now I want to install Centos 5. and i wish to keep the /backup as it was. (as my cron scripts and others are written in this way)I wish that it will be mounted at the time of boot. And moreover, I can add a new hdd (using the manuals) but I need to keep the data.
Also the second question:: I have implemented a WiFi hotspot in a hotel with a Cisco WLC and several Cisco APs. Now I wish to restrict and log on access for both wifi and wired LAN using user names. Raduis is okey... with a mysql password database... I found a thing named hotex hotspot billing. But that's expensive. Also FCS's module is expensive too. I do not need billing, just access control. Any ideas on this?? It must be a linux based kind of baremetal package...

Jan 25, 2010Problem : centos 5.3 hangs while remotely copying data onto this server.
I have A centos 5.3 x86 Version installed on Xeon Quad core , running on 8 GB DDR2 RAM, RAID 1 confgured on SATA drives. this was old installation copy and It has many more things running on it.Therfore, I can't just reinstall it.
I have setup SAMBA PDC + ldap on it. I encounter that system hangs when I copy data into this server from LAN computers.
My troubleshooting steps :
1. I have checked for network issue , My network works fine when I transfer data between other LAN compuers.
2. Even I have tried confguring seprate LAN....
3. I thought their might be some problem with my SAMBA configuration, therefore I did data transfer from sftp .

Jun 2, 2010At my work, we have an ISP that provides us with 2 connections with different IP addresses but at the moment they don't switch automatically if one fails, and can only work for outbound traffic.I tried to automate this with floating routing table on a CISCO 1711 router but then switching to the second link only happens when there's no longer a signal on the cable that's plugged into the router's interface directly -- and the failure most often happens somewhere in the middle. And that also does not make us available from outside.
Can anyone suggest a better way? Maybe an outside DNS server can have a second IP address recorded for our domain name?I found somewhere suggestions that a loadbalancer could solve that but these appliances are way too expensive.I also thought about using BGP but my router's RAM (128MB) is too small for the global routing table that BGP requires. And I also need an ISP (or better 2 ISPs) that provide BGP service. Before trying to convince others that we need to invest more into this, I'd like to know whether there are no easier ways.

I can easily drag and drop the Samba files onto the client. I would like to automate this process, and accomplish this using an update copy versus a copy full. Feb 27, 2010I've been running my little server at home for a few months now, and I've noticed that Webmin has detected that I'm in need of over 100 updates. I'm a bit scared to run the updates because everything is working just fine right now, but a part of me still wants to run some of the updates.Now I know backing up the server would be a good idea to do before this happens. This server is a media server with videos, music and pictures taking up the majority of the hard drive space on the server. I just have one partition on the server, outside of the swap partition. I would like to back up everything on the server except the videos, music, and pictures, because if even an update messes with the server, I could always retrieve those, and the external hard drive I'm going to back up to wont be big enough to hold everything anyways.
if I were to backup up everything except for those directories that hold my videos, music, and pictures, and something were to go wrong, if I were to restore all of those, would I then be back to the state my system was at when I backed up? I've never done a back up and restore in a linux environment before. I just want to make sure that just doing that will be enough, because the last thing I want to do is hose my server after taking several weeks to get it to the working state that its at.

May 16, 2010how would I backup a specific package. Really all I want is the configuration files.
the package I'm talking about is mumble-server, could I say rsync all the files that were installed, then if I wanted to drop it in just copy those back over?
If I had to wipe the installation and reinstall, could I install that package again then drop my backup copy back over it?
Dpkg tells me these are the files it installed.

May 18, 2010have had a server running for a very long time using Ubuntu Server 7.10, and I think it's passed time that I upgraded.I'll be installing fresh, and I've already backed up /var/www (as well as a home directory with a few files)I've only used this as a Web / SFTP / file server. Might there be any other directories that would be good to backup? I set it up so long ago and have made a few changes along the way.

Feb 1, 2011We have had a hardisk crash in our RAID1 webhosting server running CentOS5 and Plesk. We first realized something was wrong when our main site didn't load but showed MySQL errors. We then found out that the system was in read-only state. Something that also happened the day before yesterday, but we could fix with a FSCK. Then the system worked well til around 18 hours later when it crashed with the same sympoms. So, we rebooted the server and wanted to do a filesystem check again. But the HDD wouldnt even load. It was gone. Unfortunatelly it was not realized that the second disk in the system was also not working any more for some time now. Fortunatelly we had our main site backed up externally though. So we could re-install a fresh box and mounted the two drives to the system. We checked the harddisk. One is practically empty (the older one), the other has almost only files in 'lost + found' but these are all "numbered", no real filenames or so.

Feb 19, 2011I am backing up may data using Rsync via SSH. I am trying to find a solution that allows me to push my backups from windows and Ubuntu to a Ubuntu server. I don't like the solution that requires my windows machines to have shared drives. Not viable for laptop users that may piggyback on free wireless networks. I would also like a solution that has a GUI for the desktop user but not totally required. I will need a solution that allows me to restore files by date. I do a lot of changes to files on a daily basis and sometimes need an older copy of a file.
I love using Rsync as it is a very simple solution and extremely quick. The only thing I don't know how to do is recover different version of a file. It would be nice to see a visual representation of all the files and different dates of each file. I know I might be asking a little too much, but, it is after all, Linux.

I'd like to confirm if my understanding of this data is correct, because Plesk indicates that my memory usage is only 50% or less. (Though I have read a number of reports indicating that Plesk's measurements are frequently wrong.)
Top says: Of the 2,073,156K total memory, 1,982,572K (95.63%) is being used, 90,584K (4.37%) is free. Of that sum, 421,948K (20.35%) are being used as buffers. Additionally, of the 2,096,472K of Swap, 60K is used, and 887,700K (42.34%) is cached.
My questions: Is my memory actually being 95% used? Or is the buffered quantity (20.35%) not a use of physical/virtual memory? (i.e. is it disk usage?) Does the amount of cached Swap influence the percentage of physical/virtual memory being used?
In other words, who is correct? Plesk says I'm using 40-50% of my memory, whereas top says 85-95%.

Server :: File Server Machine To Store All Data So Being That Have Got Four Identical SATA Hard Drives?
Jan 25, 2011I've got 4 identical 1 TB drives and would like to use them in a software RAID configuration on my home server. I'm running Debian Linux using 'mdadm' utility to manage the software RAID. I don't know how much I've read is fact or dated or even false so I decided I would ask here to get help from people who know more about this than I do. This is essentially just a file server machine to store all my data so being that I've got four identical SATA hard drives, I was thinking about doing RAID level 5. I guess I'll start here and ask if that is the recommended level of RAID. I think RAID level 5 will be fine for my general server usage. My second issue is partitioning the four individual drives to get maximum performance / space from them. Basically just asking here how would you or you recommend I partition the drives? I was thinking about doing three seperate partitions per drive:
/dev/sda1 = 4 GB (swap)/dev/sda2 = 1 GB (/boot)/dev/sda3 = 995 GB (/)Now from that partition schema above, obviously all the types will be 'fd' for RAID and the partition for /boot is going to be bootable. My confusion is that I read Grub doesn't support booting from RAID 5 since Grub can't handle disk assembly. If /dev/sdx2 (sda2, sdb2, sdc2, sdd2) are partitioned for /boot (bootable), how would you guys configure this RAID to match up equally? I don't think I do a RAID level 1 on 4 identical partitions, right?
