Fedora :: Dual Independant X Screens From One Computer

Mar 30, 2010

My setup:

One computer running F12.
NVidia with 2 CRT outputs, and one S-Video/TV output
Standard PS2 keyboard and mouse
USB (wireless) keyboard and mouse
Sound card w/ Optical SPDIF, and standard analog front/rear outputs

At present, I have CRT-0 connected to a standard monitor that I can get resolutions up to 1920x1440. TV output is connected to a flat panel monitor, with a max resolution of 1024x768. SPDIF audio output connected to TV system, and analog output (front only) connected to destop speakers. Note that the monitor/speakers are in one room, and the TV w/ SPDIF audio is in another, with the USB kbd/mouse.

I can get a cloned twin view set up on both, with the USB kbd & mouse/TV/SPDIF mirroring the monitor/PS2 kbd & mouse/speakers - but only at a max resolution of 1024x768. That by the way needs to be the virtual screen size for the TV. If I want to switch between the two max resolutions (one when using the monitor, the other the TV) I have to edit xorg.conf and change the modes line for the display, then restart the X server.

I would like to have the monitor set up to its max 1920x1440 resolution with a virtual screen size the same, and the TV set up for 1024x768 with that for its virtual screen size. I also would like the separate kbd and mice to operate with the respective screens. Ideally, each screen would be independent of the other - running two different apps on each output, similar to separate workspaces. Is something like this possible? It's a pain to have to re-edit xorg.conf and restart X every time I want to switch from watching TV to working on my monitor.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Radio Independant From Internet

May 10, 2010

I've recently purchased HP Mini 210 (about a few months ago) which has wireless accessibility. Unfortunately, internet is not easily accessible from where I live unless you have a home connection (which is quite expensive) or you connect to a Cyber Cafe (not really convenient). I've checked some really good tools like FM Radio and Rhythmbox which require internet in order to stream radio stations directly.I'm quite fond of FM Radio, though recently an old radio broke down and I thought a netbook could help (although I admit I bought the netbook for writing scripts and stories solely). Although it's funny that an old technology can do what's it's meant to do, while a newer one (PC's) depend on internet alone.

What I was wondering is that since HP Mini 210 has a wireless access capability isn't it capable of catching FM Radio waves like an old radio without depending on internet connectivity? If it is capable of it, how do I do that?

Slackware :: Where I Can Send Bug Reports Or Suggestions About Slackware Distro?

Feb 4, 2010

I found out that package 'qt-4.5.3_063bded-i486-3' in slackware-current has no html docs. I learn qt4 programming and I need this docs. So I got qt-4.6.1 from the official site, built, installed and use the mainline version 4.6.1 instead of recommended qt from the KDE git brunch. Honestly I see no difference between slackware's 4.5.3 and mainline 4.6.1.Is there place where I can send bug reports or suggestions about slackware distro? I really like this simple, fast, reliable and completely clear distributive and I want to help to improve it.

Server :: Automating Linux Administration Through Web Interface

Aug 5, 2010

The question that I am posting here is quite interesting as it was asked in the interview I attended today. And, honestly, I could not provide a solution. Ok, here goes the problem statement:Design a Web Interface that has three text fields:

IP Address:
Subnet Mask:
Default Gateway:

And a button:

When we click the Submit button, the two entries must be set in the concerned files and then the network service must be restarted to bring the new IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway in effect.As we all know that these settings can be done by the root user or a user who has those priveleges.The complete web interface needs to be done only in PHP. Some Shell Script can be used if required.

Slackware :: Slackware Is The Most Unix-like Distro?

Jul 21, 2011

I hear that all the time " Slackware is the most unix-like distro ". i did't know if it is true or not and i also did not use any other distros, may be i saw SUSE before and installed it for 3 or 4 days i guess !!. and then i installed Slackware, i duno what had happened with Slackware, although i'm not that geek who can make use of the differences between linux distros and say this is good and others not so good, cuz i know only the essentials about linux and actually all distro are same to me (linux),But once i saw Slackware, i just felt love with her at the first sight .

Luck made me use Solaris for about 3 months. and i'm telling my self ,,, haaa um using Solaris --> and Solaris is Unix --> and slackware is most unix-like --> so i think Solaris is the best and it can be the mom of Slackware After 3 monthes i fscked Solaris off and went back to my beautiful darkstar cuz i really missed having fun , and from that time i'm telling my self it does not matter if slackware is the most unix-like or not cuz i think that all UNIX should be like Slackware for all people to have fun

Server :: MySQL Root User - Administration And Permissions

Jun 22, 2010

I'm using an older redhat system (2.6.9-22.ELsmp) here which is running an older mysql (server version: 4.1.12). I don't think that's the source of the problems. I believe that have understood things rightly when I say that the mysql root user is unrelated to the linux root user ... in my case I believe the root user to be the unix user mysql. So when I connect to the server (local host from a local terminal) I use:
Code:
-bash-3.00$ mysql -u mysql -p
and enter a blank password

This gets me on, however I seem unable to do anything like create database or alter privilege. I wonder if its related to my finding no database called mysql?
-bash-3.00$ mysql -u mysql -p
Enter password:
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or g.
Your MySQL connection id is 11 to server version: 4.1.12

Type 'help;' or 'h' for help. Type 'c' to clear the buffer.
mysql> show databases;
+----------+
| Database |
+----------+
| test |
+----------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)
Although I understand that show databases will not show things I have no priv to see. Does this mean my settings for the users are all screwed? How do I rectify this situation? Some other (perhaps) useful information.

Code:
[root ~]# cat /etc/my.cnf
[mysqld]
datadir=/var/lib/mysql
socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
# Default to using old password format for compatibility with mysql 3.x
# clients (those using the mysqlclient10 compatibility package).
old_passwords=1
[mysql.server]
user=mysql
basedir=/var/lib
[mysqld_safe]
err-log=/var/log/mysqld.log
pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid

So my BASEDIR seems to be nothing like is suggested in the documentation at [URL].

Slackware :: Partitioning Schemes - Primary Boot And Distro Hopping

Nov 22, 2010

I managed to do something that takes real talent to do: I broke my Slackware. I was chowning something for a user and, as I was really sleepy, accidentally entered "chown -R user /". It really didn't break, but it started to get glitchy because I couldn't fix it well enough. Then I rage-quit the game and wiped my whole drive except for my personal files. So now I'm here to learn how to properly install Slackware64 current out of the box and hear suggestions regarding partitioning schemes. First of all, I'm aware Alien Bob has a script to help automate the upgrading of the system. Is it the mirror-slackware-current.sh? Then what should I do? Install Slack and run the script or can I download things from another distro (I have Arch installed - love LXDE!) and use the Slack DVD to boot and choose it as the source?

If the suggested method is to install Slack first and go from there, I should upgrade slackpkg first, right? My other question is regarding partitioning schemes. I have an 160GB hdd and I used to follow this format: a small (200MB) primary /boot, a primary 20-30GB /, a primary 100GB (give or take) /home and the rest as an extended distro-hopping partition (at the moment I'm building LFS) plus swap. The thing is that I've been noticing a big inconvenience in this method. I have around 40GB left and sometimes I get curious about distro x or y and want to install it so I have to change the logical partitions and my swap gets renamed, which makes me have to edit my fstab. I already changed this setting sda1 to be swap. I'll be installing in a desktop personal computer. Some college work, but nothing too hardcore.

The primary need is for the server to land wifi users to a hotspot splash screen where they will accept terms of use and indicate what town they are from by checking a box or selecting from a dropdown menu. Users of terminals in the library would also have to indicate what town they are from. Things such as content filtering may come later. What distro would be recommended for this? Ease of use and configuration is important. They basically want to track use of the internet.
