Slackware :: How Do I Specify Root Disk In Lilo

Jun 13, 2010

With the continued growth of SATA devices, I have really been having problems with my boot loader. In the old days, it was pretty easy to make sure that the IDE devices stayed put. However, now everything is an sd device. Specifying a root directory of /dev/sda1 in lilo is no longer a sure thing. If you have a USB device plugged in or an ESATA device, your sd devices are no longer guaranteed to stay put.In reading through the lilo documentation, it appears that you can specify root devices by UUID or even by LABEL.

Networking :: "The Network Is Unreachable" - Floppy Disk Distro

May 28, 2011

I am building a v2.6 kernel floppy disk distro to run on a 1992 computer. FWIW The specs on the computer are

* 66 MHZ processor
* 12 MB ram
* 400 MB HD
* EGA monochrome video card

It runs Linux quite nice actually. I want to get it online with a null modem cable and use the other Linux box as a gateway to the internet. I have networking, TCP and slip support in the kernel. I do now know if I have all the needed network configuration files. I am able to ping 127.0.0.1. If I try to ping the other computer, I get a "network is unreachable" error. Tell me any commands to run on either box and I will attempt to do so. Remember the old computer is running a stripped down toolset since its only two floppies worth.

Slackware :: Install Puppy 525 On Slackware 13.37 PC As A Dual-boot Using LILO?

Jul 18, 2011

I'm trying to install Puppy 525 on my Slackware 13.37 PC as a dual-boot using LILO. Puppy is living, all on it's own, in sda6, a 6 GiB partition. It got there by using the Puppy Universal Installer and selecting a 'Full' install, not a 'Frugal' install. I cannot find 'LILO' type instructions, only 'GRUB' type instructions.

Has anyone succeeded in doing a hard drive install of Puppy with the LILO boot loader?

Edit: I'll probably regret it, but I used Puppy's GRUB installer.

OpenSUSE Install :: Cannot Mount CD Floppy Or USB Flash Disk

Jul 22, 2010

The system is 11.1 32 bit and used to work ok

All the drives function and mount normally under Parted Magic.

Sometimes a cd will mount after 15 mins or so but if it is ejected it will not remount. after that event the dmesg output is 3 times as long. As it is 35K chrs long it is too long to post!

I have changed hardware and cables with no effect.

I have run the repair option on the install disk. I get a cannot find floppy error

It also reports cups, hal, ntp & postfix as errors but if I select repair it still returns the same next time I run the repair routine.

It also says the bootloader is faulty if I select repair I go into an infinite loop so I exit with skip. Anyway the system boots ok and runs just fine apart from the cd/fdd/usb problem

General :: Boot Debian Install Disk From Floppy?

May 4, 2010

I scored a Dell poweredge 6300 from a local pawn shop. It has the capability to boot from cd-rom, but apparently not with isolinux, which is what the debian installer cd uses. I was able to boot to UBCD411 (Ultimate Boot CD, which uses syslinux), but didn't see any option to boot to a CD (maybe I'm missing something here?). I tried using the boot floppy from this site. I didn't expect it to work (it's from the Woody era), and it did not. I got a message that says SYSLINUX ver.XXXX CBIOS boot failed. I went to [URL].. and looked for a boot floppy image for Lenny, but apparently it doesn't exist. I did however find the boot floppy image for Etch.

To be honest, even if I did find the Lenny floppy boot image, I'm not sure how to use it to point the system to the installer CD. So, I have two questions:

1) Does anyone know of a boot floppy image for Lenny, or if I could use the Etch boot floppy image?

2) How would one boot from floppy, then point the system to the installer CD?

System info:
(4) Xeon Pentium 2 processors 500 Mhz
(6) UltraSCSI hard drives
(1) SCSI cd-rom drive
(1) SCSI dvd-rom drive
(1) Floppy drive
(1) 10/100 NIC

I'm open to any other suggestions as to how I could install Debian Lenny on this machine.

Slackware :: Unable To Install The Lilo

Jul 4, 2010

I have been given a new old computer, Asus K8N-E with a 2GHz AMD Athlon 64.OpenBSD and Debian works like a charm. But with Slackware 13.1, LILO won't be installed properly. There are two disks: a 10GB ATA-drive with the system and a 250GB SATA-drive as a data repository.

Apparently the computer insists that the SATA is the first disk. Subsequently the bootable partition is not on the first disk and disables LILO to be installed. This is when I try to install LILO to a partition. When it is installed to MBR, it says something about overlapping and can't boot.

Slackware :: When Installed, Did Not Install LILO?

Feb 4, 2011

When I installed Slackware, I did not install LILO. Instead, in my LMDE, I ran: grub-install --recheck /dev/sda, then I ran: update-grub, then: reboot. This worked ok, although I have 4 grub enteries for Slackware - who knows why, but there are 4.I decided to install grub from the Slackware DVD. I copied the extras/source/grub folder to home and as su, ran pkgtool and selected grub from /tmp.From the root directory, as su, I did: rub-install --recheck /dev/sda but when I tried: update-grub (or grub-update), I got: command not found. I rebooted... (probably should not have done that)Grub menu sort of appeared with not boot options.I rebooted into Slackware from the Slackware DVD and now I am writing this from my Slackware installation.

I usually install grub straight away after an install but this time it hasnt worked for some reason after installing 13.1 on a new lappy. I have tried grub, grub2 (from sbo) and lilo; nothing I install into MBR will boot my slackware installation, I have to use the boot USB stick every time.

grub-legacy would be my preferred one so ill ask for help specifically with that. This is what im doing so far -

General :: Looking For Non Compressed Small Command Line System Distro?

But the problem is, all these small Linux versions are LiveCD or have a compressed file system.

We need a SMALL linux distro, that we can install UNCOMPRESSED (no squashfs etc) on a hard disk.

This is so simple I'm sure I'm missing something..

Slackware :: Lilo Not Booting Slackware Correctly - Errors Inside?

Mar 1, 2010

I'm fairly new to Linux so I'm going to need a step-by-step guide to get me out of this rut. The install of Linux was fine but when I booted up I got this error. VFS: Cannot open root device "302" or unknown-block (3,2) append a correct "root=" boot option;here are the available partitions;

0800 78150744 sda driver:sd
0801 47428608 sda1 <-- this is my Windows partition
0802 30719552 sda2 <-- this is my Linux partition
0b00 1048575 sr0 driver:sr
0b01 1048575 sr1 driver:sr

Kernel panic - not syncing:VFS:Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (3,2) I guessed from reading this error Lilo isn't pointing to the right partition to boot from? How will I fix this? I read another thread about boot problems on these forums and a guy said to do this:

#mkdir /slacktemp
#mount /dev/device /slacktemp
#chroot /slacktemp
#cd /slacktemp/etc <-- for me it told me that doesn't exist
#vi lilo.conf <-- couldn't do nothing and was frozen
#lilo -v -t -b /dev/device
#lilo -v -b /dev/device

The above solution did not work for me. Can anyone shed a light on a Linux rookie?

Slackware :: Dual Boot With Lilo On Btrfs - Slackware 13.1?

May 29, 2010

I just did a fresh install of slack 13.1 on a separate drive to the one I was previously using. I've been having trouble getting lilo to work, so that I can choose between either drive. Lilo is currently installed to /dev/sda, with the old system on /dev/sda1 and the new installation on /dev/sdb1. I keep getting errors like these:

Code: Fatal: Trying to map files from unnamed device 0x0011 (NFS/RAID mirror down ?)
I managed to install lilo from the old system by copying the kernel image from the new system into the /boot/ directory and running lilo. I am now on the new system and trying the same thing in reverse but it isn't working. I have searched around a bit and there's a lot of talk of chroot-ing into the other partition to run lilo. I don't understand why the process isn't working both ways though. I can't run lilo on my new installation even with the two kernel images in the local /boot/ folder. Is this something to do with btrfs or am I missing something to do with lilo? This is my lilo.conf file. I am trying to run lilo using this file from my new installation on /dev/sdb1 and getting the error given above.

Slackware :: SBo SlackBuilds Fail At Make Install Under Latest

Mar 4, 2010

I'm running a clean install of the latest version of -current64.When I try to run a number of SlackBuilds from SBo, the scripts stop (no error) after the make install step.If I manually run all of the commands after make install, I get a fully functional package, and the program works with no problems.In looking as the logs, I don't see any errors during the configure, make, or make install steps.

I'm having problems with other scripts as well that are not XFCE related, but these are good examples. Another oddity is that the SlackBuild script for thunar-archive-plugin at slacky.eu works.I've never had any problems with these scripts before, and many other scripts still run just fine. I can't track down a common problem here.

General :: How To Get Live CD To Start After Booting From Floppy Disk

Nov 18, 2010

I'm an experienced Linux developer who has run into a little problem. I'm using a National Instruments 8170 chassis, among the normal ports, it has a FDD and USB port but this model does not allow booting from a USB CDROM ( I tried a BIOS update, that didn't help either ). I made this cool customized 550MB FC8 LiveCD wtih X, GCC, various apps, etc. and a kernel 2.6.30 & 2.6.18 boot floppy disk with all the needed drivers. The floppy boots to a shell with all the busybox utils, etc. and detects the USB CDROM media and all its files.

My Question is: How do I get the kernel and initrd on the Live CD to start or boot after booting from the Floppy disk ?, I mean, I want to load linux again but this time from the CD after booting linux from floppy, if that makes sense. I'm just using the floppy to boot and recognize the USB CDROM. This can be done with MSDOS and loadlin but loadlin has an issue(it hangs) with the newer kernels (2.6.18 and greater). I searched for the loadlin source code to port it to linux but was unable to find it on the net.
