I have been looking around online and I am seeing that there are several solutions for doing a nightly automated backup on Linux. I was wondering what people here actually use for doing such and why they use one particular backup method over another.
What I am looking to do is every night (at say 3am) I want my system to backup my 200gig Documents folder to my external hard drive. Does Ubuntu have a tool built in by default to do this or do I need to add something from the repos/online?
I have a really quick question-I would like to set up some type of scheduled event to back up my entire /home folder to a USB drive.I know about all of the various programs such as simple backup, etc. and have used them before. I have Mandriva 2006 on a computer that I regularly backup important directories every night to a flash drive. I use Cron for my backup with scheduled backups nightly. For my script file to do the backup, there is a line that says to copy these directories to /media/sda/backup, so I figure it was copying to the sda named usb device. Well it wasn't. It is copying to the /media/sda/backup directory on my harddrive. But I would like to copy it to a usb device. How do I find out the name of my usb device that I have plugged in?
I have 2 'how-to's' with rsync neither are working. I need to backup nightly some items and using a command line, I am prompted with a password, enter and it works. I now tried these 2 items in the shell script, both of them still when run prompt for a password. I have tried;
#!/bin/bash export RSYNC_PASSWORD=passwordhere - and - also created a blank file called pw (to test) and then tried #!/bin/bash rsync --password-file=/pw xxxx
Both of those options when run still prompt for a password. These severs are running old RH9 servers.
I've tried to google but not much luck. What I would like to do is have anumber of folders on my desktop and their contents, replicated/duplicated into another folder on the same PC in real time. So for example, if I were to change an OpenOffice document in a specific folder on my Desktop it would be replicated/duplicated in real time. If I had three folders on my Desktop A, B and C they would also appear/be backed up (in real time) in a folder called /home/backup. Can this be done?
I am trying to create a backup script that will back up a single folder for a class i am in. I was wandering if I could get some help. If possible I would also like to know how to write a script that can encrypt that same file . I will be putting the back up in my /home/usr/Backup directory. I am not trying to back up my whole system just a single folder. I am using Fedora 11
Linux/Ubuntu noob here so please be gentle So I own an Ubuntu server (7.10 - "gutsy") which was previously used for my small business. All setup and maintenance of this server was done by an admin who has since moved on and I can't get in touch with.As part of the setup, this admin has somehow setup the server such that whenever I plug in an external HDD (USB) it automatically runs a backup script which copies over a whole bunch of stuff to this drive.I want to cancel/delete this script as this is no longer necessary. Can anyone give me any pointers as to how I could track down where this script is and how to remove it?
I wonder if anyone knows of a cross platform sync/backup utility that can do the following:
Incremental backups Revisioned backup (possibility to not just restore the latest but to go back to a specific point in time) Two way sync. E.g. two computers sync to the same server and the server also pushes changes to the clients (well I suppose it might be possible to solve it by restoring the latest backup also) Cross platform: Linux, Windows & Mac (the server side may be Linux only)
Basically I want a revisioned version of Unison or a local version of Dropbox with support for custom folders. Depending on how you see it.
I'm not afraid to script things together if no pre-built solution exists but there are tools that when combined might do this. However it must be possible to automate, this comes from the fact that I want to be able to schedule it so it performs automatically. (If there is a way to push changes to the computers, like Dropbox, that's a plus but not a requirement.) This also means that a command line utility might be preferable over a GUI-only one.
Like topic, I want to create a weekly backup of some folder to anoter partition (or external usb), compressed or not (folder also of 20/30 gb), with only root permission on file (or folder) created..This system, where I have installed debian jessie, is always on being used like a NAS..

i am not familialized with Linux i installed recently a TACACS+ server under CentOS 5.5 and it is working well but my boss asked me to make a weekly backup of the tacacs.log file to check who was connected at any time the problem is that i don't know how tp make this backup and how to make it automatic and also he asked me to change the default port of tacacs from 49 to another port does someone knows how to make it?
I created a profile for Yast Backup and successfully executed it manually. However, when I set up the Automatic Backup with the same profile it doesn't work. It will start at the scheduled time and do the "search" part of it but it hangs before it creates the archive. These two processes (backup_cron & y2base) remains running and never terminates.

Currently, I would like to setup an automatic backup system, where the data on my computer is copied to an external harddisk which is connected to the router (Siemens SE551). This device theoretically allows setting up a file server, but unfortunately I can't access the share from Linux. I have not yet tried to access this share from Windows.
The rough plan is to use rsync and ssh, issued by a cronjob on both, my Ubuntu- and on my WinXP-notebook. But before considering this, I have to get my system connected with this drive.

First off I'm running a headless Ubuntu server 10.10 box.I have a single folder on a ntfs drive that I wish to copy somewhere else on the same HD. I'd like this to automatically happen about once a week or so. It would be even better if it would tarball the copy also..but this isn't a 100% necessary.

How can I control what files and directories are created? I checked /etc/skel but none of those entries where there. In particular, I do not want to have the folders "Bilder", "Documents", "Musik", "Videos", "Vorlagen" and "�ffentlich" being created.
Is it possible to run OCR on new .pdf- and image-files in a spesifc folder on the server? Today the schools in the region was presented a tool that do exactly this, but of course this only runs on windows.
This script simply deletes files older than a certain age (in this case 7 days) from a certain location; I use it to purge old backups nightly, and it works as expected:

I just came back from a meeting with someone wo wants this functionality:When he saves a file on *his* machine, it will automatically get copied onto a server (this is on an office LAN). This is so if there's a virus attack on his machine, he will have an uninfected backup copy. To make matters worse, the client machines will be WINDOZE. Apparently he's seen this kind of functionality at an office somewhere (he was saying something about "Microsoft" , but my brain has erased that part of the conversation ), and now wants it for himself.
I was thinking about Samba obviously, but the tricky part is doing the copying when the user *saves* a file. This will require hooks into the OS to see when a file is being saved.*If* I manage to persuade him to switch his client machines to Linux (which would be the ideal choice and make life far easier), how would it be done? I'd have to use the File Alteration MOnitor in the kernel, right?Would it be possible to write the copying code in a shell script?
I'm trying to create a very simple back up script to back up the contents of one folder on my system to an NTFS formatted external hdd. I want to keep the ownerships and permissions of the files I'm backing up intact so I'm putting them into a tar archive. Compression is not necessary as I have plenty of space for the backup.
I have created the initial backup with the following command: Code: tar -cpf $bupath/backup.tar $sourcepath This seemed to work quite well with the resulting file being about 170gb and took about 5hrs. For subsequent backups, the files are probably only going to change by about 10% at most so it seems inefficient to create a whole new backup from scratch. I would like to be able to just update my existing archive with any new/altered files.
I have tried using the update mode (-u) with tar like so:Code: tar -upf $bupath/backup.tar $sourcepath
So far this has been running for about 10hrs and the archive has grown to approx 220gb! What's going wrong here? I was expecting the update to take 30mins max and there be no significant change in the archive size. Am I perhaps misinterpreting the purpose of update mode in tar, or is there something wrong with my command? Is there a better/easy way to accomplish this?
Before I reinstalled Ubuntu (this time allocating the entire disk to it as I never really used Windows any more) I backed up the entire contents of my /home folder using Deja Dup. Now that I am done reinstalling Ubuntu I am trying to restore the backup. However, when it actually begins restoring the backup, it says "Restore failed: failed with an unknown error".
I have read that i can backup the entire system with the home folder with commands, or with programs, such as clonezilla, but it doesnt work, so im trying to back it up with commands now but i cant find a good tutorial to explain what commands to use.
I am trying to use rsync & ssh to move a backup folder some computers to a server. I found a command that is supposed to do this, but I am having issues getting it to work.
I'm a beginner at backing up my Ubuntu system, but I've set Simple Backup to do a backup once a week. I deleted the oldest of these files, but now it's sitting in my Trash and I can't empty it. I get a permission denied error for the folders within the backup folder in the trash, yet I can't restore the folder either - Ubuntu says it 'failed to determine the original path' for the folder. I've just discovered this in Xubuntu Jaunty, but I'm confident the same will happen in any other WM I choose (I have several installed - I like variety ).
It's not a huge file, but it's hanging out there and I'd like to get it either deleted or restored. Possibly I oughtn't to have deleted it in the first place (it usually lives in /var/backup, which I can't access except as root). The files, which I probably deleted /as/ root, show up in my user trash rather than root's trash. I found the trash in ~/.local/share/Trash/files, but I'm not sure if just deleting them as root would be a good.
I have installed an application manager(monitoring application) on my linux server. Now, i need to have backup schedule for my application. When I position icons on the desktop in specific places, then I choose to move a file or folder into another folder, all the icons arrange back to the left side. This happened in an earlier version of KDE 4.x, disappeared the next version, and reappeared. how to keep this from happening. It makes using the desktop a pain in the you know what.
After upgrading to 11.04, I noticed something strange, being that when I want to drag a file or folder from one Nautilus folder window to another which is not visible, I can no longer hold the item over said folder's taskbar button and wait for it to appear. It just shows the + for copy, and when I let go (which I have no choice but to eventually do), it creates a launcher to that item (I assume it's doing that, and not actually copying there, but the + has me unsure).
I've looked in Nautilus's preferences to see if this is some new behaviour that I can revert back to, but could find nothing there.
I'm of course using the Classic desktop with bottom panel being the taskbar. If you know how I can rectify this, please let me know, as the times I would want to create a file or folder launcher without the usual hassle would be rare, but I am constantly dragging stuff from one folder to another, and it would be a real pain to have to line up source and destination folders each time.
