after updating kernel and installing nvidia drivers, the startup splash(I dont know the proper word) has changed into bar type. How can it be corrected .

im having an intel E2180 processor with 2 gb RAM and an nvidia 8400gs graphics card. Lately i installed Fedora 12 on my system and found that with default settings the desktop 3d is not working. so installed the kmod-nvidia using yum after following the instruction.i also edited the grub.conf file to rdblacklist=nouveau to blacklist nouveau drivers.
Then once i rebooted i found two kernels in grub ie the old one and the one with PAE extension. when i booted into the old kernel its Xwindows failed to load showing a black screen and when i tried the new PAE kernel it booted in 640 x 480 resolution. {earlier i was getting a resolution of 1440 x 900 on my 17" widescreen monitor}. it also showed that the nvidia drivers failed to load. I also read in some forums that the PAE kernels are for systems with 4gb+ of ram. So i thought it better to reinstall the whole thing.
then i reinstalled the whole operating system using my fedora 12 dvd and performed the 'upgrade or replace the existing linux distribution'. interestingly now my older kernel has disappeared and the PAE kernel is the one that is remaining.

I am running kernel 2.6.32-23-generic-pae and since updating nvidia drivers do not work. I go into hardware drivers and activate but I get dropping to low resolution desktop or VGA not supported.

I turned off my computer last night and when I turned it on today it's back to everything being huge and the screen resolution being 640 x 480. Then when I try to change it, it says my video card isn't supported. All I want to do is revert back to my stock video card in my computer and remove the nvidia one since obviously ubuntu isn't working with it.

My biggest problem is that when I tried to install the nvidia display drivers, I somehow downloaded a server based driver (and am having amazingly difficult problems). I use a dual monitor set up (both are plug and play LCD displays) and i'm not too worried about aesthetics but rather, performance. I downloaded the correct driver but now I don't know how to install it. Is there a way to uninstall this server driver?

After a couple of reboots, I changed from the proprietary drivers, to the regular nVidia drivers. After doing this, the startup logo is displayed at a really low resolution. Is there a simple fix to change this and use the nVidia drivers as well?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI updated FC14 which included the kernel and also the nvidia drivers kmod. Then after a reboot the video driver wouldn't load. From another terminal I tried different things to fix it and didn't managed. I eventually erased all nvidia drivers so that I can get the default one. Now every time it boots I get a really low light. I can login, but can't see. It seems that the whole screens has about 5% light and I can't see to do anything. I managed now to boot into FC live CD for FC15 and I have light. For FC14 live CD it's the same no light problem.
I tried all older kernels to boot but I have the same problem. I am using PAE kernel and that's why I installed the kmod drivers. But now, since they are not anymore and I can't see anything, even though I am logged in I don't know what to do next. Is there something I can do from FC15 live cd? How can I go using the terminal to my harddisk and how to add the driver or any low graphic driver so that I can have light? After I did yum erase *nvidia* the light went almost off.
It seems the latest nvidia drivers (255.44) don't seem to work on my Lenovo Thinkpad T61 in Lucid. Has anybody gotten it to work? I've tried to just use the System -> Drivers control panel to install and activate the current nvidia drivers as well as installing it from the command line. However, when I reboot, I see the nvidia splash screen come up for a second, then the screen goes blank, and then the nvidia splash screen pops up again, and then the screen goes blank again, over and over. It seems to be in some kind of infinite initialization loop. My T61 has the nvidia NVS 140m chipset. This is frustrating since the previous drivers seemed to work ok. When I try to revert to older drivers, it complains now that they're no longer compatible with the latest kernel headers, etc. I've had to boot up into the failsafe graphics mode to be able to use the laptop.

I got fedora 12 like 2 weeks ago. I am newb in using linux. I got enough of the problems windows 7 has and thought to change on something good and free . It seems OK but i want to try play some online games on fedora. Seemed it did not have video card drivers installed and tried to install them. Once i installed some kind of video drivers using a yum command i found on web. But i think something was wrong because when i tried the first game installed with wine it worked as if i didn't have video card . Even yahoo messenger works very bad as if i won't have video drivers. I remember at the middle of that installation it shown kind of error like it did not find something.i don't remember exactly what it shown because immediately after that it continued to install video card drivers. But after i tried that game it still seemed something wrong happened. So....how can i see what video drivers i have installed ? Do i need to uninstall them before trying again? I got a CD with drivers when i got my notebook do you think those will work if i install them using wine ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe new NVIDIA drivers don't seem to work as seamlessly as back in Jaunty and before. In Lucid when I activated the drivers I had to do some grub tweaks to make my splash look normal... But with Maverick it is even more messed up...
Problem: The splash either doesn't appear at all (black screen) or it appears in the text format rather than graphics... In some instances it even hopelessly tried to load the graphics splash - loaded the background but the instead of Ubuntu logo and the progress-bar animation it displayed a "Ubuntu 10.10" in a monospace font.
I installed Nvidia drivers according to the post in HowTos section. It downloaded a different version of the existing kernel, i guess. And the kernel using which I downloaded, when shows up GUI, looks like a Safe Mode of Windows. So I boot the kernel that it downloaded. And there the problem is that in Network Manager applet, it doesn't show me the wireless connections. It doesn't even show the Enable Wireless checkbox upon right clicking it. How to get it back?
View 4 Replies View RelatedThe updated Kernel 2.6.32.26.175.fc12 (i686) broke nVidia 96xx drivers (nVidia MX-4000 card).Resulted in a quickly flashing cursor in the upper left corner, with no X startup.I removed the driver and let it rebuild using akmod. Still have the same problem.When I revert back to the previous kernel 2.6.32.23-170.fc12.i686, all is well.At this point, wonder what the chances are of this being fixed? Seems the last set of updates before EOL of a release always breaks something critical.
View 6 Replies View RelatedBasically everything was going fine, and i was enjoying the OpenSuse experience, then downloaded djl (Games Launcher) , installed some games and found that i had a very very very bad frame rate (about 1FPS), and my GPU is a NVIDIA GTS250 (1GB), and runs most games flawlessly under m$, so i went about installing the graphics drivers for my card. I followed the instructions and was under the assumption that i installed the correct ones, but now i cannot boot into any graphical interface. I think that it should be a graphics issue, as this was one of the few things done before rebooting. I have tried booting into the normal mode, and the failsafe, I have read many other "Not booting'' posts, and have tried their solutions without success, there include: Changing the boot parameters Logging in and manually trying to boot up the gui (init 3.... init 5... etc)
When the computer tries to load up OpenSuse in normal mode, it comes up with the normal loading screen, and then about 90% of the way it stops for about 30 seconds, and then switches over to a CLI, asking for a login, going through the log a couple of things fail, did have these noted down (but cannot find and will post along with other commands that i am asked to do) I want to try and avoid a reinstall as it took me a long time to get the WiFi card working.
After searching online and in these forums I found two different ways of installing the Nvidia drivers in fedora 12. If you haven't yet installed the the repos then:

I used the first way and everything seems to work fine. Compiz-fusion works good but i did have to add vga=795 to /boot/grub/grub.conf to get the graphical boot loader to work again. Should I have used the second method? What is the difference in these two ways? Most notably the second steps. Is one way better or preferred over the other? From my understanding you must do this because of the nouveau driver.

I installed the nvidia driver from the official repository for openSUSE 11.3 and now everything works perfectly, except i get a verbose splash screen after the grub menu.It has worked after i upgraded from 11.2. In my menu.lst it already says splash=silent.If you want more information, please ask, because i don't know where to look or what to show you (i'm fairly new to linux in general).

Finally I found the reason. VirtualBox installer searches for the source kernel at /lib/modules/2.6.18-194.17.4.el5/build, and it can not. Look into /lib/modules, I have some kernels such as:
- 2.6.18-194.17.4.el5
- 2.6.18-194.17.4.el5debug
- 2.6.18-194.17.4.el5xen
... and more old ones.
At that time, I booted on 2.6.18-194.17.4.el5 kernel. But inside that directory, there is no build or source (directory/ file). Then I looked into 2.6.18-194.17.4.el5debug, and it had. So I typed: ln -s /lib/modules/2.6.18-194.17.4.el5debug/build /lib/modules/2.6.18-194.17.4.el5/build
So I have been trying to install these drivers forever and after going through a million forum posts and Google searches I have been unsuccessful. The process I have been trying starts as such: I hit ctrl-alt-f1 and then login as root. i then change to run level 3 by doing /sbin/init 3. After that's done I cd to desktop and do sh NVIDIA-LINUX-x86-185.18.29-pkg1.run --kernel-source-path /usr/src/kernel/2.6.18-128.2.1.el15-i686
If I don't give it the source path it can't find the source tree. Eventually I get the error: ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. I know that current just pushed kernel 2.6.33 down, but has anyone been successful in building the nvidia drivers against this new kernel? I'm not having any success with the 190 driver and the 195 beta driver. There are some patches that I found on the nvidia forum, but so far, nothing is working.

Now I have ubuntu installed on an actual hard drive(wubi was deleted beforehand) and I get no such icon. So I'm wondering how to update my drivers. BTW I have a 9500GT

View 4 Replies View RelatedThree times so far I have had to re-install ubuntu because I installed an updated or new Nvidia graphics driver for my GeForce FX 5200 The first time, using Natty Narwhal, I installed an updated graphics driver, and upon reboot, I was presented with a blank screen that did nothing. Being a first-time Ubuntu user, I assumed it was me, or a bug in the new release. So I burnt a Lucid Lynx cd on another pc, and installed that instead. Same problem when I installed a new graphics driver, again via Admin>>Hardware Drivers. Reboot yielded a blank screen. Booted from cd again, as I had no files yet to worry about, and everything seemed to be fine, providing I stayed away from that tempting hardware drivers button.
I then accidentally installed a new driver when installing the dependencies(via terminal) for OGRE (Object-Oriented Graphics Rendering Engine) This time, my terminal froze, Firefox wouldn't boot, and a reboot yielded a blinking, blank login screen that did not do anything. Obviously, I'd like to have a graphics driver, as currently I can't run anything that needs 3d acceleration (Games, 3d simulations, even Desktop effects), but it's not absolutely necessary. So if nobody can suggest a fix, short of a new computer, new graphics card etc, can anybody suggest a way that I can stop myself accidentally installing anything driver-ish? The driver worked fine on windowsXP, but there's two reasons I'm not going back to that: a) I hate it. Hate, hate, hate.b) I've lost the activation key that came with computer, so I can't reinstall.
Further detail can be provided on request. Computer is Dell Dimension 2400, 256Mb RAM, Hard drive is almost empty. Old and slow, but I like it.
I am running Debian "Sid" and cannot install the Nvidia driver. When I try to install the driver using Module Assistant it says "Bad luck, the kernel headers for the target kernel version could not be found and you did not specify other valid kernel headers to use." It also says "If the running kernel has been shipped with Debian please install the package linux-headers-2.6.32-trunk-amd64." The kernel I am running is the one currently in Debian "Sid".

I can mv xorg.conf to xorg.conf-pre and nexuiz will fire-up. Without 3d of course. I spent an hour or so last week going over my xorg.conf but it just ain't broke!
Someone else saw it, too, and reported it but his post remains alone in the thread as of 10 minutes ago. Anyone else seen this?
I don't play games much at all, but sometimes I just wanna frag muthafuckas and now I can't.
I'm still getting used to the system. I've been able to install a couple of packages like Disk Manager and Firefox, and was able to mount my ntfs drive. I've only learned some basic terminal commands, but I'm managing ok so far. That is until I looked into what was involved in installing the video drivers I need for my Nvidia 8400 GS card. (ouch!) Maybe I waited not long enough (5 minutes), but the screen was blank, then I gave up.Anyone has an explanation. I can always re-install everything, but then what went wrong with the nVidia package
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhat i have done so far, after all that i still get a black screen after rebooting, so im runing on x11 failsafe.
1) Installed development tools and sources needed for nvidia kernel module build.
Checked what type of kernel i have and installed all the components below with all the dependencies they pull in.
2) Added nomodeset into /boot/grub/menu.lst
3) Set NO_KMS_IN_INITRD to Yes in /etc/sysconfig/kernel
4) Added blacklist nouveau to /etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf
5) Rebuild initrd and rebooted
6) After reboot switched to run level 3, login as root (or as user and su to root)
7) Install the NVIDIA driver, run nvidia-xconfig (the -X option) and reboot
