Server :: Booting In Shell And Then Start Graphic?
Nov 6, 2010
I have installed ubuntu desktop (not server) because some users want to access the gui (because of their applications). Now what I want to manage is: 1- boot the system in shell mode. 2- if someone want, use startx command to enter graphic mode for his own. otherwise he can continue to use pure terminal shell.
Is it possible to do such thing? how?

I'm an absolute beginner and I've recently upgraded to 10.04 Lucid on a Dell laptop. Upon booting I get only a terminal window instead of the usual ubuntu graphic interface.

I am booting a certain system of mine with ubuntu 9.10 from external HDD. I am satisfied with the setup and it works fine, however I would like to modify it so that I can choose which graphic card drivers to load during the boot time. Specifically I would like to choose between:
nvidia proprietary driver
ati proprietary driver
generic driver
Currently if I am using proprietary drivers then dont boot into X, delete xorg.conf, start gdm and reconfigure the system using jockey (for hardware drivers).
What would be the steps to make this (semi-)automatic and avoid restarting X?
Where could one find examples of such scripts?

I've been having this glitch since Maverick. I hoped installing Narwhal would solve it (clearly not), I like Ubuntu, but this makes the OS frustrating and pretty much unusable, forcing me to stick with Windows.
The glitch appears randomly but mostly within 5-10 minutes after booting.
Another thing : when you want to screenshot the glitch, it usually gives you a perfect image, with everything OK. I have no idea why it worked now. I have a Packard Bell Dot M Netbook.

I have one Asus motherboard with inbuilt HD 3300 Radeon family graphics system, I have used it with radeon and radeonhd drivers and I have xorg.conf. I tried to change card to Radeon HD 4350 but it didn't give more than terminal view, Xdm didn't start. I believed the driver would support both cards?

As far as I know the power went out once and my computer might have been on - now Ubuntu won't boot correctly. It boots into 'BusyBox v1.15.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.15.3-1ubuntu5) built-in shell (ash)'.
Code:
mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or directory
Target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init.
No init found. Try passing init= bootarg.

I am working on a embedded target board which runs on linux. The target board is connected to a linux machine through serial port. To bootup the target board, I run the minicom in the linux machine, boot the kernal of the target board through giving the boot command through the serial console (minicom). Now the question is when the target board boots up, it doesn't starts a shell. The rc scripts are getting executed. There are target specific applications getting started from the rc scripts. I appended & to the last launched application. Still I don't get shell prompt.

I have never in a year had a problem with this d-boot system. Two days ago I tried to boot into ubuntu like every day. It started to load normal, went to the ubuntu logo and paused for about 15 seconds and posted this under the logo:
One or more of the mounts listed in /etc/fstab cannot yet be mounted
/: waiting for /dev/loop0
/tmp: waiting for (null)
/boot: waiting for /host/ubuntu/disks/boot
Press ESC to enter a recovery shell
I have looked everywhere and tried so many things, I can't look any further. All I have been doing for two days is trying to boot this system.

I have tried to run
Ctrl Alt Backspace
and
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
But the terminal requests the root password and I can not enter anything for the password in the line. If I go to the next line and enter anything the password fails.

When I try to start alacarte from the shell, I get: Traceback (most recent call last):
[Code]...
The reason I start from the shell is because I noticed that it would crash after starting up in system monitor. This problem started after I tried to remove a program from the list which had already been manually removed. When this program was unchecked, the list went completely blank. I tried to revert the list, but it didn't work. Is there any hopes of repair?

When I first installed Lynx it would boot fine but as the first kernel updates came in it began to get really dodgy. Some days a certain kernel would boot up fine whereas the other would boot without X (i have dual boot with XP and so the kernel options come up on GRUB)Just today I updated the NVIDIA drivers and now neither boots fine, I looked around and I found that after logging in running "startx" in the CLI, which is displayed instead, i get my normal desktop back again.

Well, I initially had quite a lot of trouble getting Compiz to work, but I finally got it to go. I had to use these start-up parameters in order to get it to work:
Code:
LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true compiz --replace --sm-disable ccp &
emerald --replace
How in the world do I get Compiz to start up like this on boot up, so I can use it easily?

Right, so I've looked high and low for the answer to this problem and haven't found it, although I've found a million and a half threads about grub especially when it comes to dual booting windows. Which I'm not. What I am though, I suspect, is an idiot who shouldn't mess around with my computer at 4 am.
So the problem is every time I turn on my pc, grub tells me it can't find a file system and goes into recovery mode. Can't boot into ubuntu at all. Am using the live disk to type this.
I also think I know why grub is doing this, I was dual booting windows before, I had windows installed originally, added ubuntu to a new partition. Was having problems with grub. Figured that reinstalling it wouldn't be a bad idea, it might fix it. In that process I did something rather stupid, I accidentally installed grub to my other internal hard drive. There is no operating system on it. Just movies, music, etc. The problem, I think, is that my second hard drive is sda, and the one with my os is sdb, which I suspect means that grub is loading from sda and finding no operating system, rather than from sdb. (It's like that because my larger drive wouldn't fit into the sda slot on my computer, long story.) How do I remove grub from sda?
