what I wrote is.

#!bin/sh
cd /home/HUNT/server1
gnome-terminal

Programming :: Start A Process And Send Input To It In A Shell Script?

Jun 9, 2011

I'm building a Linux From Scratch system and partially automating it. I will likely want to do it again, and I would like to try to almost completely automate it.

My current approach is a script that takes an input file and sequentially runs each line in a new instance of bash. If one fails, it gives me the number of the step that failed so that I can use the "--step" option to resume after I fixed the issue.

This has some problems:
A varible created on one line will not be accessible on the next line. This is because each line is run in a separate shell (the reason for this is so that the commands in the input file and the script's internal variables can't interfere). You can't switch users or use chroot, again because each line is run in a separate shell.

What would be nice is to be able to start a bash process in the background and send commands to its stdin. I guess that a named pipe would work, but the named pipe will be gone after a chroot. Is there a way to do it without relying on the filesystem? Also, how do I know if the command failed?

Ubuntu Servers :: Stop Openssh From - Ever - Running At Start Up?

Jun 12, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and I have installed openssh.I need to find a way to configure it so that it never start up when I boot into my computer. The reason is: I haven't had the time yet to learn how to set it up and configure it correctly. Until that time comes I don't want it to run at all.Every single time I boot into the system and I have to do that first before I can even do what I really need to on the computer. It's annoying.Does anyone know the best and least complicated way to just make it not run at all until I'm ready to set it up properly? Also how to check what is running on my system after I boot up so I can double check, after making the changes, that it worked right.

General :: Back Up Scrip - Find / Cp / Md5sum / Rm - Move All Files And Directories

Oct 22, 2010

I want to move all files and directories that are 1 month old out to back up into a separate folder. There will be a lot of files and I want to make sure it copies properly. The problem I'm having is integrating a MD5SUM into it to check integrity. MD5SUM is not recursive, so I figured it would work in a loop when it copies each individual file, I'll do a md5sum on each file and delete that md5 once its verified it copied ok.

[Code]...

I also need some sort of error handling to output all md5's that didnt pass the hash check.

For example on a Red Hat 5.3 server - our IPmonitor shows that 85% is used on the /usr partition, however when I do a df -h on the server it shows that 91% is used. Why there would be a discrepancy? IPmonitor uses SNMP.

Programming :: Cron And Fsarchiver Reportedly Running Not Actually Running?

Jun 1, 2010

My root Vixie cron crontab is set to perform a system snapshot via fsarchiver: 0 0 * * * fsarchiver savefs -o -A /backups/p30_root.fsa /dev/sda2 /dev/sda3 The command itself works fine, generating about a 7G snapshot of my Suse server. I then wish to rsync this to a NAS I have located in another building: 0 3 * * * rsync -av -e ssh --delete /backups/ root{at address}:/DataVolume/os_backups/

(yes, I'm rsyncing as root. I absolutely loathe it, but I got thrown into an quasi-SA position with a ridiculous to-do list and no time to do it. I'm having to make things just work and then go back and try to improve them/learn how. I couldn't make it work in a non-root way quick enough, so for now I'm having to cron rsync jobs as root because of all the differing file permissions on this samba/MySql server. I set the NAS to only accepts ssh from the server IP, and we're behind a campus firewall... It's serious trial by fire.) The crontab also has rsync commands for the samba areas, our specialized chemistry software and affiliated MySQL databases............

General :: Running An ASP Page From A Shell Script?

Jun 18, 2011

I am trying to access an aspx page which, when accessed with certain parameters in the URL, downloads a file. I need to do this with a shell script, rather than interactively. I tried using wget, but I get a response of 302 from the server, which redirects me to the default page and then downloads the default page html itself. I quickly tried curl which seemed to be doing the same thing. It works perfectly from browsers on either Linux or Windows. Originally, I had a problem with interpretation of ampersands in the URL, but I put quotation marks around the URL, so that isn't the problem now.

I cannot fix this on the server side, because the aspx page will be accessed on a variety of servers which are probably all set differently and which aren't under our control.

General :: Running Shell Scripts With Cron

I've been having a bit of trouble running a shell script with cron. A friend of mine does a community radio show and the station has a live stream but no podcasts, so I've set up a script to record the stream and encode it as an mp3 while I'm away using mplayer and lame -that's what I'm trying to do anyway.

Here's the script, but it doesn't seem to run- at least, I don't see any of the files it should be outputing, would they be in the cron.weekly directory (where I have the script) or in my home directory?

#This is a script to record 'The Unnamed Show'

#it will record the show from the live stream, then convert the output #to an MP3

#Finally, it will delete any files no longer required HOME=/home/byron/
