View 2 RepliesI am having an annoying problem with ubuntu 10.04. with SSH, I get connected to a linux server. The command line works well. But I can NOT get a graphic interface from it. For example:
me@power:~$ ssh -Y me@123.456.789.3
me@123.456.789.3's password:
[me@master]#gedit abc.f
(gedit:23385): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
[Code]....
it's said this line is not needed for linux system trying to connet to the server.
I cannot start my ubuntu 9.10 from graphic interface now. The system can boot into the graphic interface, but will stop response at the point just before the login window appears. I've triyed reinstalling the gdm, and rerun gdm from the character tty, but it did not work.

View 4 Replies View Relatedwhat the best free linux graphic design interface was? Possibly one from the ubuntu one software center. I tried boa constructor and it was glitchy and kept crashing. I want something very easy to use and as simple as possible as i am new to programming. I want something that also supports the major programming languages like python C++, etc and was also wondering where i could go to learn codes for python.
View 4 Replies View Relatedworking on KDE, I cannot shutdown, reset, logout or switch users through graphical interface (you know, bit blue button, 'leave' tab and all these buttons).I've googled the problem, and here's what I have found:[URL]Guys on the Arch forum related the problem to the OGG files and phonon-xine - indeed, I cannot play OGG files anymore.I tried to install phonon-vlc, but the package is not in any of my repositories. I tried to remove libqt4-phonon, but it would also remove half of the system, which isn't the best idea. Someone else suggested to install speex, but it's already installed on my Kubuntu.I'm out of ideas, and I'm not really sure how to reinstall xine and phonon without deleting half of the system like this:

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am a newbie to Jaunty, so please forgive my descrip. terminology. I am experiencing a great amount of grief with my Jaunty install. I can no longer get a login screen in Jaunty. When I try to boot normally for this install I get an unclean shutdown screen & it goes into the "checking drive" mode. I uninstalled some applications such as has to do with touchpad, remote desktop, xorg-driver-fglrx etc. I reinstalled xorg-driver-fglrx, which I later found out that I do not need. I have an AMD64 HP system with ATI graphics onboard.
I need to find out how to load graphic user interface in Jaunty. Some of the necessary files have been completely removed by me & I need to reload the repositories and update my current install. The partition is encrypted but I have been able to login with the username & password for THIS encrypted install using the "repair broken system" part of the GRUB screen.
How do I go into the terminal and load repositories, and maybe the kernel so I can do an update/upgrade? I do not know if upgrade is part of what I need to do I wanna keep my Jaunty install so I can access 50G of data that is on this install. I have made no backup of this data!!!
I am able to login to my install using my username & password after I get to the "#" prompt, (option "fix broken system" in GRUB) so I know login can be done under username of install. I just need to know what to TYPE into the terminal to restore the necessary files in the right place to make it run. (Is it called terminal at that point?)
As a substitute for IDM, for linux this program comes in handy.. I want to know how to get it installed graphically

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have installed ubuntu desktop (not server) because some users want to access the gui (because of their applications). Now what I want to manage is: 1- boot the system in shell mode. 2- if someone want, use startx command to enter graphic mode for his own. otherwise he can continue to use pure terminal shell.
Is it possible to do such thing? how?
I've been having this glitch since Maverick. I hoped installing Narwhal would solve it (clearly not), I like Ubuntu, but this makes the OS frustrating and pretty much unusable, forcing me to stick with Windows.
The glitch appears randomly but mostly within 5-10 minutes after booting.
Another thing : when you want to screenshot the glitch, it usually gives you a perfect image, with everything OK. I have no idea why it worked now. I have a Packard Bell Dot M Netbook.
I am booting a certain system of mine with ubuntu 9.10 from external HDD. I am satisfied with the setup and it works fine, however I would like to modify it so that I can choose which graphic card drivers to load during the boot time. Specifically I would like to choose between:
nvidia proprietary driver
ati proprietary driver
generic driver
Currently if I am using proprietary drivers then dont boot into X, delete xorg.conf, start gdm and reconfigure the system using jockey (for hardware drivers).
What would be the steps to make this (semi-)automatic and avoid restarting X?
Where could one find examples of such scripts?
Hats off to opensuse's 11.4 desktop appearance. It can even stand upto a MacOS . However a thing that spoils my whole mood is the screen that appears till the desktop is loaded. The foggy dark green colour isn't that appealing.
changing the background of that part. the gecko logo and the progress bar are fine, i just want to change that dead background. The opensuse 11.3 appearance was far much better.
I've managed to change the boot loader skin, the logon and splash screen
So I finally got ubuntu..I wanted to play team fortress 2.Runs great in wine etc.But 1 problem. It keeps saying my graphic card is outdated.I cant see anything. So I downloaded the driver from nvidia website.Followed some instructions. But it says cannot open binary file or something. Is there any other way to update graphic drivers.Cause I realy still want to play some windows games.Mount&blade, Atlantica online, team fortress 2 etc

When I do...# iptables -L...I see rules in my INPUT and OUTPUT chains that look scary:ACCEPT all -- anywhere anywhere...but these rules only apply to the loopback interface. I tested it and the server cannot be reached on open ports from the outside world. How can I make iptables show the interfaces that the rules apply to?Otherwise, every time I do iptables -L it will scare the crap out of me.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup, when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because, again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then, instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing, once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup, then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process, once i finished i continued to the next part, the installation, but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data, after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot, appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line, since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been searching the forums for any posts that cover my problem, but most of the booting problems I've found are different from mine.Anywho, the situation:ell laptop, 2 partitions, first is Windows XP, second is Ubuntu Karmic.Whenever I turn on my computer the first loading screen that shows up (is this the BIOS? Excuse my little knowledge of this stuff), before GRUB loads, is really slow. It takes about a minute to load. However, whenever I restart from my XP partition, it suddenly loads fast! And this does not happen when restarting from my Ubuntu partition or anything
