I have seen pricing from $8 to $30 a year. Any favorites from fellow ubunters? Also this whole "whois" thing scares me, if I am correct my information I enter when buying the domain is enter into some big pool of information. People can find this information out and dig up important information. url Can I prevent this with private Whois or how do I set it up? This website examples some of my fears with this whole WhoIs thing, url whois/Private-Whois.html Does most/all domain registers come with email or just email forwarding or both? How does that work? I'm using Ubuntu Server (32bit) on a machine at home. I've bought a domain name(s) via Heartinternet.co.uk and my ISP is Bethere.co.uk I have installed my LAMP Server on my home based server and it's accessible via my static IP address. HTTP is forwarded on my router to my Ubuntu (web)Server. Now then, in laymen's terms, I want my domain name to resolve to my Ubuntu Server. I have installed and configured Bind9 to this guide found online: http://goo.gl/M3Pk i understand that I need to do this in order to 'host' the domain name. Or alternatively, if my presumptions are correct, I could leave the domain name with the registrar and use their DNS config panel to add an A record to point at my webserver (static IP address)???
If I forward port 53 (default for DNS) to my server (after setting up bind9 correctly) and within my domain name hosting options change the nameserver settings to point at my static ip address then would this be enough to host my domain from my home network?
I feel I nearly have a whole picture but...not quite. There's a multitude of vague guides on the internet (vague or I'm not reading them properly!)

I was told that I could create multiple websites ona single machine useing Virutual Hosts.I have RedHat Linux 9 running Apache/2.0.40. I want to make offline test sites to learn with and have read it is as simple as changing /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf file but I have not been able to make it work yet. I have read over the past 3 days of working on this that the default virtual host must contain the same DocumentName and ServerName as the global info above the Virtual Host Section in the httpd.conf file.Above Virtual Host Section:

I have just finished bulding a virtual web hosting server on my CentOS-5.5 x86_64 linux box with several websites hosted and its working fine. Now I have to build and FTP service in this webhosting server so that i can create indviudal login for each website and provide access to thier respective web directory only. This is where I am stuck. I have been trying to find out some docs and instructions to achieve this but in vain.
What I need is to configure an FTP service in the web server so that individual owner of websites can login to thieir respective web directories only and upload and download files as well as create, delete and modify the contents of their web directory.
Over the years I've had various flavours of linux on webservers, each has handled this in it's own way - some due to the GUI that was installed etc...
What is your prefered way of holding NameBased Virtual Host records...?
Is it like the redhat system having a sites-available and a sites-active and sim linking the records of the active sites and having httpd.conf only get the info from sites-available?
I know that some people have all the Virtual Hosts records at the end of httpd.conf (or apache2.conf)
What would you do if you had to start a fresh?

Before giving me any advice, please know that I will not sign up for hosting with a company from which I cannot reclaim the domain name if I should ever choose to switch hosts. I have a mail server taking care of mail for my 4 domains; the first is used for virtually all mail, the second rarely used anymore, the third is virtually 100% spam the past year(?), and the fourth isn't in use (and never has been, so no spam). What I'd like to do is to reject all mail to the third domain. Right now this is what I get (I tried to send to a nonexistent address from gmail):

Since my username (xyz@) is the same for all domains, I could (or so I hope) change the reject message to give a hint to replace [URL] with [URL] and try again.
I've setup postfix using mysql tables and all works except for sending to an alias. The mysql logs show that postfix is only looking at the mailbox table for where to deliver the mail for the alias. However it is not looking in the virtual alias maps table. There are no complaints from postfix on startup to indicate that there is anything wrong, and if I send to a virtual domain listed as a relay on the server it does look up the virtual alias table... even though the domain is not hosted on the server....
So the question I have is where to look next? The mysql log shows the expected lookups from postfix EXCEPT for the virtual alias map queries.... why would it not be checking the table? Since it is not looking up the virtual alias it bounces the addresses back to sender complaining that the user doesn't exist... It does deliver to a virtal mailbox, however again it never checks the vitual alias table.... so it only delivers since there's a mailbox for it rather than needing an alias...

I am running vsftpd-2.2.2-3 on my Fedora 12 box. This box has multiple IPs. What I am looking for is make vsftpd listen on those multiple IPs and when a user FTPs to a certain IP, they get landed to the home directory that has been configured for the IP.

I have a Linux machine which is on my network but not on my domain. I have configured SAMBA FILESERVER for file sharing purpose. I have a Windows XP PC which is on the domain(windows server) that I am trying to connect to a share on the Linux box. I supply my credentials but regardless of which login I use I always get Logon Failure. I have created an account on the Linux machine with the same user name and password as my domain account but so far no luck. Can I connect from a domain PC to a non-domain Linux box? Is there something else I should be checking?
I'm working for a smallish non-profit that has gone through some recent growing pains. We have two sites that are currently without a domain controller, and no money for MS licenses, so I was thinking of trying to add a couple of additional Linux machines (we already run Linux for web services internally, and I've set up a test case previously to see if I could get a server to join the domain, which was a success) and was trying to find out if I can get them to act as Domain Controllers without replacing the domain. The main issue that I'm having at those locations is drive mappings are not happening correctly against our DFS file servers. The one other location that had this issue had it go away when we added a local DC. The domain is a Server 2008 domain.
