i have a weird issue with my web server. every time i enter my domain name instead of processing my index file it downloads it. wth could be the problem first time this ever occurred. recently installed webmin.

I have seen pricing from $8 to $30 a year. Any favorites from fellow ubunters? Also this whole "whois" thing scares me, if I am correct my information I enter when buying the domain is enter into some big pool of information. People can find this information out and dig up important information. url Can I prevent this with private Whois or how do I set it up? This website examples some of my fears with this whole WhoIs thing, url whois/Private-Whois.html Does most/all domain registers come with email or just email forwarding or both? How does that work? At this moment, my only question about Web Hosting is how do I get Website Statistics as in: Stats, web analytics, web traffic stats and more? I will be web hosting through Ubuntu 9.10 gnome.
I'm using Ubuntu Server (32bit) on a machine at home. I've bought a domain name(s) via Heartinternet.co.uk and my ISP is Bethere.co.uk I have installed my LAMP Server on my home based server and it's accessible via my static IP address. HTTP is forwarded on my router to my Ubuntu (web)Server. Now then, in laymen's terms, I want my domain name to resolve to my Ubuntu Server. I have installed and configured Bind9 to this guide found online: http://goo.gl/M3Pk i understand that I need to do this in order to 'host' the domain name. Or alternatively, if my presumptions are correct, I could leave the domain name with the registrar and use their DNS config panel to add an A record to point at my webserver (static IP address)???
If I forward port 53 (default for DNS) to my server (after setting up bind9 correctly) and within my domain name hosting options change the nameserver settings to point at my static ip address then would this be enough to host my domain from my home network?
I feel I nearly have a whole picture but...not quite. There's a multitude of vague guides on the internet (vague or I'm not reading them properly!)
I am trying to get name based virtual hosts all running on HTTPS (port 443) so I can run multiple sites on the one IP.

However, I am unable to find where to actually enable these hosts in the configs. The apache website says to put it in httpd.conf however that file is empty on my machine.
The existing default virtual hosts are in "/etc/apache2/sites-available/default" and "default-ssl"

I am running vsftpd-2.2.2-3 on my Fedora 12 box. This box has multiple IPs. What I am looking for is make vsftpd listen on those multiple IPs and when a user FTPs to a certain IP, they get landed to the home directory that has been configured for the IP.
This feature is there in Proftpd and is called virtual hosting. I tried to find for Vsftpd such feature, but couldn't find out exactly how to implement in it. how to implement virtual hosting in Vsftpd?

What should I check in a few blogs I checked they said to mention in [URL]...But in this case what should I put I have two different websites or what other thing I have missed? I do not have access to DNS so that on LAN I can point site1.abc.com and abc.com to same IP 192.168.1.5 which to me seems could resolve the issue.
If I go to a virtual host it asks me if I want to save "index.php" (Typing in the host name followed by index.php also works). But if I go the main site it does not. This happened after an upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04
Here are some additional details - apachectl -M shows rewrite_module (shared) the host config file has AllowOverride All the dir and php5 modules are loading fine.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have my home network up and running. I can access my index file by the ip I gave to eth0 - 192.168.0.2
I put this same ip into etc/hosts:
192.168.0.2 localhost localhost.localdomain
One space separates the hostnames from the ip in /etc/hosts.
The hostname command returns: localhost.localdomain
I have /etc/resolv.conf configured the right way, so I can use my isp's DNS servers. I know this because yum works and I can ping anywhere by url. The next step is to learn to access the index file by url locally on my own network.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy setup is two laptops connected by crossover cable. One runs Windows xp the other Fedora 13. Neither is connected to internet. I'm using a subnet of 192.168.1.x On Fedora eth0 is up, apache runs because it creates pidfile. Everything pings fine. Windows xp ip pings fine from command line. Gave Windows xp a static ip of 192.168.1.1 mask 255.255.255.0 and gateway 1.2, same as eth0. xp says it sees the server. eth0 is up.
DirectoryIndex looks at index.html. I created that file with very simple code and put it in document root. Document root permissions are 755. Access_log 770. Error_log 644. Apache User 755. Listen 80 When I type the ip for eth0 (192.168.1.2) into firefox, firefox gives me an error message - can't find server. The connection status says its connected.
The error log includes a line: [warn]./mod_dnssd.c:No services found to register I don't know what this means. Apache is not writing to access_log. When I cat the path to access_log I get nothing, then a command prompt. I'm looking for the part I'm missing that will let Apache serve that index.html file to firefox so I can see how my code looks to firefox as I go.

I was told that I could create multiple websites ona single machine useing Virutual Hosts.I have RedHat Linux 9 running Apache/2.0.40. I want to make offline test sites to learn with and have read it is as simple as changing /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf file but I have not been able to make it work yet. I have just finished bulding a virtual web hosting server on my CentOS-5.5 x86_64 linux box with several websites hosted and its working fine. Now I have to build and FTP service in this webhosting server so that i can create indviudal login for each website and provide access to thier respective web directory only. Is it like the redhat system having a sites-available and a sites-active and sim linking the records of the active sites and having httpd.conf only get the info from sites-available?
I know that some people have all the Virtual Hosts records at the end of httpd.conf (or apache2.conf)
What would you do if you had to start a fresh?

I am a newbie trying to enable virtual hosting and run it on a local machine without fqdn. I checked the http://9.9.9.92/ (my IP address) site and saw my (default) page. I would like to virtuly host a asdf.com If virtualy hosting is setup properly - how do I access the new setup? Just type http://asdf.com ? or is there more to it?

Assume I having a linksys router with port forwarding function, I have three seperate machines with different private address connect to the same linksys router. Can I entry all private address forward to port 80? Does it work? If I insist to host website on three machines, does that mean I need 3 static IP and 3 linksys router?
