I am trying to figure out the "actual" disk size used by my system. When I run the "df -h" command,I am not taking here into consideration the shared memory of 2Gb as it is a sort of virtual shared memory and is not allocated physically. Is that correct ?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been working on getting another OS installed on my computer for one of my classes (OS specific assembly instructions). To get this OS running, I had to start using a GPT rather than a MBR table. I backed up my Ubuntu partition (ext4) using the old-fashioned dd command. I've since been able to get everything working again after a dd restore.
The problem is that my original Ubuntu partition was only about 50GB and the dd image only takes up 40 GB. After I restored the image to the new drive (146BG), gparted is reporting 119GB used and only 26GB free. What can I do to reduce the size of my install to 40GB again?
When looking at the disk in baobab, it says the the filesystem is only 47.2 GB and that only 20.9 GB has been used. This is likely what the old partition's breakdown was. So my new question is: How can I make the filesystem capacity (47.2 GB) equal that of the partition that it is on (146 GB)?
i have some issues running twinview through my laptop and an additional monitor. i currently have the nvidia settings such that the monitor is the primary screen. however, whenever i click full screen in videos or another application, it maximizes in my laptop screen. also - when i maximize videos videos, the screen fills up, but the actual video size doesn't tend to increase (it doesn't stretch to fit). is this an adobe problem? ubuntu 10.04, nvidia driver v195, dell latitude d630 laptop.

10 gb (ntfs) for a windows partition
15 gb (ext4) mounted on /
4 gb for swap
the rest (470gb - ext4) mounted on /home
I've just installed a few apps from the repository, nothing big (about 500 mb in all), but in the 'file system' tab in 'system monitor' it says that for /home I have a total of only 432 gb, of which just 408 gb are available, with 500mb used. According to this, around 60gb of space have just vanished into thin air. Where did all this missing disk space go? The disk is brand new and there are no bad sectors in it.
I need to clone a laptop drive to a desktop drive. The laptop drive disk is 150 gb, however, only about 8 gb is used. Is it possible to clone this disk to a smaller drive?

copies all the contents (including free space). So sdb also needs to be 80GB.
You will notice that in VMWare or VirtualBox disk images, it is possible to set the disk to use only the amount of space of actual data. So a 80GB virtualbox/vmware image with 4GB of contents will be 4GB.
Is it possible to do that with an actual hard disk (sda) image? I want to create an image of an actual hard disk, copy it to DVD and transport it (in mail) for restoration on another computer (having same hard disk).
a client brought in an 160GB external HDD and wanted to get the files off it, there appeared to be no partitions on the disk but i thought it may have been formatted to use the whole disk. I tried to mount it as the various FS types the client thought it may have been to no avail.
I ran testdisk on it which told me that it previously had a mac partition table and a 210GB partition on it (which is larger than the disk) could anyone enlighten me as to whether or not this is even possible, and if so how could i retrieve the data?

How do i find out which of the 4 physical drives it is? They all look the same to me when i open up the PC case. Maybe some utility which will load up heavy usage on just one drive and i will try to put my finger on them and figure out which one is vibrating? Or maybe there is a smarter way?

i would like to determine the hard drive partition associated with a directory. ie i have a disk partition as user with mount point Home. this i think contains my Home directory. a downloaded program resides in /usr/bin. now there is a /usr/local/bin with nothing in it. my question is how can i tell what disk partition /usr/bin resides on. if it is on my user defined partition i will not lose the program on a system install i think?

Ive been running VirtualBox with a windows XP installation for some time, on an opensuse 11.0 host for some time. Recently, however ive been having issues with suse, and want to take my virtual XP and make it a primary bootable physical partition, on a second disk
I know it can be done, but im not finding how exactly.
What ive tried so far. I've taken VBoxManage terminal tool and converted the VDI to a .img file, and tried to move that to my second physical disk, but it didnt work at all.
After some thinking, I booted to acronis true image within my virtual machine, and cloned the C:/ drive of windows over to my second hard drive. That got me further, but doesn't boot fully. Comes up to windows xp logo, and black screen boot loops.
Ive heard about using vditool to create a .raw file, and then go from there, but im at a loss to find vdi tool
How can i move my virtual machine to a physical, bootable partition on a second drive?
I am currently using windows xp, but I have acquired another hard drive and wish to install ubuntu to it, unfortunately i do not have a working cd drive. I have loaded the newest iso in daemon tools and it asks me if i want to install it in windows, or restart my computer to do a full install. i wish to do neither. i want to install a full copy to my other drive with the virtual cd drive. I have found alot of help dealing with installing it on the same drive as windows or something that would require a floppy drive. this task seems like it would be alot simpler than installing on the same drive, buy maybe not. Did i miss a tutorial somewhere?

I have two disks /dev/sda and /dev/sdb./dev/sdb has failed and I could not rebuild the array(madm returned that the device is busy) so I rebooted the machine. After that, the whole sdb disk went missing, as it now only shows sda in fdisk -l.Did the disk went totally dead or my raid glitched?

My problem is that one of my disks died, and I have to send it back for a warranty replacement. However, the disk is dead, and I can't zero it out. I was going to go ahead and intall Ubuntu 10.10 on my Windows XP w/sp3 Machine for a dual-boot config. I've done this before without issues but want to see what setup is Optimal giving my current disk drives.Here's my current setup in this picture. You can see I have my windows on Disk0 C: and the other 38GB on this drive Unallocated.
My other 80GB drive has Two 40GB windows file systems but I could erase one of those (Disk I to install Ubuntu on. Does it really matter? From what I recall Grub takes over fine and manages the boot. Thanks for any tips before install. Should I install on Unallocated on Disk0 or free up unallocated space on Disk1 for Install? thx
I recently setup a new Linux server running Fedora 10. For some reason all ping response times are rounded to the nearest 10ms. For example, running the simple command "ping yahoo.com" give the following sample results:

I could post a larger result set but its all the same... every response is rounded to a multiple of 10ms. This wouldn't be a big deal except that the server is running Nagios for monitoring so accurate stats are important. The Nagios check_ping and check_icmp commands are also returning rounded off results. How can I get ping to simply respond with the actual response times rather than a rounded off number?
This may seem like a silly question but I have many servers and sometimes we forget when we login if it physical or virtual running on a VMware system. This makes a diffrence when I try to get a console access etc. So I wanted to know before if its physical or VM.yes I know i can change motd once i get the info or make a list etc. There are many ways not OS related for me to find this info out. But I was wondering if there was a Linux command that I could use when I ssh to a system to check if its physical or logical?I have inventory information etc and vm vsphere to check but that can be time consuming if I just want to check something quick.
uname -a or something like that that would tell me would be cool. I am thinking there is no command as Linux really does not care if its running Vm or physical.
When I run df command, the sum of free and used space doesn't tally up to total space. Now I found an explanation in this thread: URL...The amount of "reserved" space seems a little too high as OP of the thread had commented, but may be that's what needed. Now my question is is there a way to change/specify this amount of "reserved" space manually?Also is there a way where you can see the actual disk usage for every mounted partition including the hidden "reserved" space? Because sometimes this mismatch makes the output of df very confusing!
I am attaching output of df, and fdisk from my NFS server. The amount of reserved space seems to be close to 5% of the total partition size.
On F12 and sure need to upgrade. Way back when I first had a bad disk on the "system" disk that was 80G, I only had a 200G lying around. Next time that happened my other 200G wasn't "big" enough it said, so I put a 500G in there. Now it seems I got more bad blocks etc but I need to lower the size 'cos I don't want to put a 1Tb HDD in there. My question from all of this is, how do I decrease the image so I can put it all on a smaller HDD?
Used space on the system disk's partitions is about 30G, so an 80G disk should be sufficient. What I can think of is that I need to "move" all data to the "beginning" of the HDD, then make an image of it but and the entire disk, just the data. I've tried that with no luck since the image seem to get as big as the HDD, hence why I always needed to increase the HDD all the time.
I got the VMrss used by a process as about 2GB, but the physical memory of my computer is only 1G.
