Server :: Two Physical Apache Hosts Served By One Machine
Oct 19, 2009
Is there some way that I can use apache/iptables to serve both of my servers through the same basic domain? I'm not talking about VirtualHosts either, I don't believe ( despite the fact that's all I can find anything to read about on Google when searching for this ).
Anyway, the problem is that I have a TorrentFlux php torrent-client that I run so I can add stuff to the download when I'm not around. I don't want to put this on my regular webpage server because there's just not enough diskspace in that machine. On the other hand, I don't want to replace that server all-together because the other machine is my desktop and would not make a reliable host.
So my idea was that there could be some way to have the apache2 server on my dedicated server redirect a subdirectory in its webroot to the webroot of my desktop's TorrentFlux server, but over standard HTTP ports so that it is more like the server is serving up the content of my desktop server through its HTTP service, instead of simply redirecting.
The reason I want to do this is because so far I have to use the TorrentFlux server on a nonstandard port so my dedicated server can still host its own things on port 80, but I've been running into several situations where the browsers I want to use do not support the nonstandard port such as with some instances of IE or the browser on my BlackBerry.
Anyway, I'm not looking for a step by step or anything ( though it couldn't hurt ) but I just need some ideas on what I could search for to get some better ideas. There's probably some term for what I want to do I'm not even aware of that would help me greatly.
Runnining Ubuntu 7.04 and apache 2.2.4 along with shorewall 4.0 as my routing/firewall software.

I have a server that host's several sites, recently I had to create a new server because the old one isn't good enough for me. Ive installed apache2 on the new server and moved all the files from one server to the other. I'm making tests in my local lan so I've edited my computer's hosts file to point to the name of each site to the local ip of the new server:
192.168.1.85 www.mypage.com
192.168.1.85 svn.mypage.com
192.168.1.85 trac.mypage.com
I have all the site definition files in /etc/apache2/sites-available I also have the used a2ensite to enable each page.
Whenever o use my browser to try and access each of the sites I always get the svn.mypage.com page and none of the others.
here is some debug info:
Code:
sudo apache2ctl -S
VirtualHost configuration:
wildcard NameVirtualHosts and _default_ servers:
[Code]....

We are having an odd apache issue. Certain files are not being served out.The files actually live in a remote DFS volume served off a windows system. They're mounted under /data/vizwx. There's a subfolder here called wx_intranet which has all the data.The Document root for this virtual host is /data/www/htdocs. There is a data/vizwxsubdirectory with a symlink named wx_intranet which points to /data/vizwx/wx_intranet .SELinux is completely disabled (not even permissive).
When a user requests a file from http://<host>/data/vizwx/wx_intranet/VizWx_14c.jpg no error is given to the browser. Firefox just shows the URL in question (I can't even view source). The <vhost>_access.log file shows: wx_access.log:172.16.1.16 - - [19/Feb/2009:15:30:16 +0000] "GET /data/vizwx/wx_intranet/VizWx_14c.jpg HTTP/1.1" 206 167791And there's nothing in the <vhost>_error.log, even after cranking the LogLevel up to info.
The permissions on the files in the share are slightly weird for reasons I don't fully understand, but they should work... the files are an effective 'chmod 3777 <file>' for all files in the mounted directory... that's with Sticky and SetGID bit set.What am I missing here? Oh, I also modified the Vhost's options from "Options all' to 'Options all -SymLinksIfOwnerMatch" to see if that was the problem... no dice.)CentOS v5.2, apache 2.2.3

I want to put Google analytics code on all legacy pages on my server, most of them don't have a template so I was wondering if Apache can automatically append the code.

I have to run multiple instances of apache on the same physical machine, as we have different OAM policies for different domains.is in the httpd.conf file can I have ServerName same in two instances of apache, like
ServerName: prod_machine (actual machine name)
In the vhconf files I do have different servernames for virtual hosts. Apache instances are running on same IP but different ports. I am including various vhost files in the main httpd.conf file. Can I skip servername in the main httpd.conf file and include different servernames in the virutal hosts configs. OS: Solaris10

What is the (officially) proper way to configure Apache so that a given IP address can have two or more virtual host names, each going to different distinct configurations (e.g. with different DocumentRoot, Alias, etc), and also do this for the IP address so that it goes to a designated configuration rather than defaulting to the first or a random host name?
Apache documentation does not appear to address this. If so, it has it hidden in a non-obvious place.

I run couple of sites on a virtual hosting environment and I am in need of adding additional SSL for a different domain name. From what I read on some forum topics indicate that SSL cert requires different IP address. meaning one cert for each IP. Is this true? If so, then I'm having some difficulties understanding the benefits of running virtual host if a server can't host multiple secured site through single IP. Any way to run multiple ssl site within virtual host environment. I'm hoping for a possible workaround.

First of all I've looked at "similar threads" without finding an answer. I'm setting up Name-based VH using an IP as the base. The OS is CentOS 5.4
My config looks like:
NameVirtualHost 12.345.678.90:80
#
# NOTE: NameVirtualHost cannot be used without a port specifier
# (e.g. :80) if mod_ssl is being used, due to the nature of the
# SSL protocol.
[Code]...
The names are of course not in DNS so to access the server from my local Windows machine I had to use the hosts file: 12.345.678.90 dev1 Entering dev1 in my browser *does* take me to the server but it takes me to default VH (DocumentRoot /var/www/html). What am I overlooking?

This really has me baffled! I'm running Apache 2.2 on Windows Server 2003 (I know, my first blunder). I can edit existing virtual hosts without a problem, for example, I can change this existing vhost to point to a different document root and it works fine:
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName existingsubdomain.mydomain.net
DocumentRoot "C:/Inetpub/wwwroot/mydirectory"
</VirtualHost>
But the moment I try to add a new virtual host, it doesn't get recognized! When I try to browse to it in a browser, I get a "Server not found: Firefox can't find the server at newsubdomain.mellemallc.net."
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName newsubdomain.mydomain.net
DocumentRoot "C:/Inetpub/wwwroot/mydirectory"
</VirtualHost>
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to why this may be happening?

I need to deploy Windows Server 2008 R2 onto a server that is currently running Linux. Effectively, I want to restore a Windows disk image onto the Linux system hard disk.I don't have physical access to the machine, so I need to find a way to do everything remotely, using SSH (no KVM). And the Linux machine only has one hard disk - the one containing the OS. However, I might be able to create a partition in free space at the end of the hard disk to store the image (I might need some help with the Linux commands). Or perhaps the image file can be pulled via FTP.
I tried Acronis but was disappointed to find that it doesn't seem to allow me to overwrite the system partition (unlike the Windows version of Acronis, which is capable of doing this with a restart).

I'd like to access a samba/SSH server which itself is connected to a VPN Server, therefore acting as a VPN Client. As soon as the VPN Connection is established, samba and ssh connections to this VPN Client get a timeout. But not all of them.
To get a better understanding I made an overview. The first one is a general network overview, without any VPN Connection, the second one with the VPN Connection established.
Network Overview without VPN
I can access the server in several ways:
*From the router via ssh (router runs ipcop with busybox)
*From the laptop via ssh (putty via Windows 7)
*From the laptop via samba
*From the internet via ssh (port forwarding to the ssh server)
Everything is working as it should.
Now the server that runs ssh and samba service connects to a VPN Server on the Internet, this is also working fine. Now it gets weird. The only samba/SSH connection that is still working is ssh directly from the router to the server. Everything else gets a timeout:
*From the laptop via ssh (putty via Windows 7)
*From the laptop via samba
*From the internet via ssh (port forwarding to the ssh server)
Network Overview with VPN active
Why is that? It seems from the little understanding I have of vpn and networking, that incoming packages (like samba request from the laptop) don't get send directly back over eth0 but over the vpn connection. This seems somewhat logic, BUT ssh from the router is still working. Why from the router and not from the laptop? I really can't get my head around it.
Configuration Overview
tldr; One Client acts as VPN Client and samba/SSH Server. As soon as the VPN Connection is established samba/SSH stop working, but only partially.

I am trying to run two web servers (Virtual Hosts) on a single Linux Centos 5.5 box with a single IP address 192.168.0.182. I did all the pre-installation requirements such yum install mysql, yum install mysqladmin, service httpd start, service mysqld start etc etc.In /var/www/html directory, I have two folder called server1 and server2. These two folders have the necessary web server php script files and folders. I opened the browser and managed to install the script on one web server successfully. When I put the IP address 192.168.0.182 on the browser address bar, the page loads without any problem. Now I would like to be able to install the other web server script and I don't know how to?Here is my httpd configuration;

DocumentRoot /var/www/html/server1

How to best manage both http and https pages on the same apache-server without conflicts. For example, if i have both 000-default.conf and 000-default-ssl.conf pointing to mydomain.com, and don't want users who visit mydomain.com without specifically type the https-prefix to be redirected to the https-page - how to handle users using browserplugins such as https-everywhere etc?
Another option would be to create a subdomain ssl.mudomain.com and have users who want to reach the ssl site to have to type ssl. I have tested several things with https everywhere enabled in my own browser, and it seems really hard to make this working the way i want, in one way or another i always end up getting redirected to the ssl-site automatically.
The reason i need this to work is because i run one site that i don't care much about SSL, that is the "official" part of that site, and i also host some things for friends and family on the SSL-part. This would not have been a problem if it wasn't that i use self-signed certificates for my ssl-site and the major user become afraid when a certificate-warning pops up in their browser and therefor leave the site.

I read once that you could use VMWare's converter to convert a physical machine into a virtual machine to run in VirtualBox. Can someone point me in the direction of a tutorial or just give me instructions on how to do this? I was very confused by the converter and how to get the image to work with virtualbox.

apache virtual host to limit the concurrent connections of virtual hosts? Taking into account the host of each virtual user's home directory can also have more than one subdirectory, which should be restricted to a subdirectory. Is beyond the control of the operation of these sites in a subdirectory. Best local restrictions or limitations to the overall situation.

I'm Rebuilding all the servers in the company I work for. I read anything I found about best practices in virtualizing, but I didn't find anything about virtualizing Apache. As MySQl is not considered to be virtualized as a best practice but to be on a separate machine - my question is "Do I virtualize an Apache server or put it on another real machine?". And also I'm going to put the server on Ubuntu!

I use NFS to serve up my media files to all the other machines on my network. What I am seeing is if a client has the NFS directories mounted for a couple of hours, files will start "vanishing" from what is being served up. The files are still there on the server. The client can no longer see them. The only way to make them viewable to the client again is to unmount the directory on the client and then remount it.

My chief file server (Dell PE R300) died last week with a disk error, and because it serves the /usr/local and /home partitions via NFS to my ~60 desktops, nobody could do any work until I managed to rig up another server and pull data off the backups. I'm using RHEL 4.To avoid this in future my plan is to knock up a dual server solution with DRDB and Heartbeat.In the meantime, is there a better way to allow desktop users to carry on working as normal, without relying on the file server too much? i.e. something better than NFS but not LDAP (I don't want to implement this just yet as the organisation as a whole may do this in the future)? My users need to be able to access the same home area on any linux desktop managed by me.Also, to implement DRDB/Heartbeat, it might be best to have the home areas on an external array, is that right? Can anybody recommend some hardware?

I have a white slate centos 5.5 installation on a virtual box at Media Temple (one of their new VE servers). I am trying to create a development environment where I can have Bind9 serve up one set of zone files to me and other developers on the internal network and another set of zone files to external requests (ie... using the views feature). I would like to be able to develop for sites for which the dns is not yet pointed at my server. The network is created by having the VE server be an OpenVPN server, and connecting my client box to the server (my mac - 10.8.0.6 / my ve server 10.8.0.1).
I have the connections working fine, I have also been able to route all network traffic from my mac through the vpn to the server. For some reason, I cannot get the DNS server on the ve server to serve me an internal view zone file. When my vpn is on, I cannot ping or navigate to any web pages from my mac. I think this is because my ve server is not setup as a dhcp server and the ip tables are not setup to allow all internal requests to use the server to go get web pages.
I cannot view-ping anything else from my mac/client when on the vpn, I can successfully ping any website my ve is authoritative for. This tells me that my ping is obviously going over the vpn, and thus an internal request, but the external zone file is still served up. The following is my named config.
acl "lan_hosts" {
10.8.0.0/24;
127.0.0.1;
};
[code]....

I'm wondering if this is even possible before I start the learning curve with Ubuntu and apache virtual hosts.
I have a static external IP address that resolves to the various domain names I will be using. I have a web server inside my network with a private IP address and any http request to the firewall is forwarded to the webserver on the appropriate port. This setup works well when using the same web page/configuration for all of the domains.
Will it be possible to use named virtual hosts in this configuration, or will the NAT'ing interfere?
