Server :: Synchronized Authentication For Mail - Web On A Windows Network?
Oct 4, 2010
I am being asked to stand up a dedicated mail and web server in a network that runs Active Directory 2008 domain. All users are running Windows XP and or Windows 7. I have stood up two dedicated Linux servers (64-bit) for the requested tasks and everything is working perfect except for the fact that users now have three individual passwords:
1. Windows domain login credentials
2. Postfix / Dovecot (email) credentials are the Linux shell login (set to /bin/false)
3. Apache / Intranet access is used from a '.htpasswd' file
Does anyone recommend a way that I could somehow synchronize the users mail & web credentials with their Windows / Kerberos credentials.

I have one Centos Server and I want to forward root mail to 1 external account: [URL] I installed sendmail and created /root/.forward with this content: [URL] and I sent a test mail with this command: /usr/sbin/sendmail root <prueba.txt But nothing was forwarded.
After that I ran the same command with the verbose option:
/usr/sbin/sendmail -v root <prueba.txt
And this is the output:
root... Connecting to [127.0.0.1] via relay...

For some reason sendmail tried to connect to example.com smtp server and couldn't reach it. I am sure this is because the smtp server for example.com domain is not example.com is mail.example.com. Besides mail.example.com requires authentication, username , password and the smtp port is not the default 25 is 9999. configure sendmail to forward root mail to a smtp server that requires authentication, username, password with a not the default 25 port?

I'm trying in the company where I work to persuade my co-partners to move slowly into the world of linux, but because everything are set up on Windows is quite difficult. Though I can install at least in one PC openSuse or Ubuntu (I prefer openSuse), but the problem is that I have to find a way to make the authentication to a Windows Domain, which is running Windows Server 2003.
How is this possible? Is this procedure painless or I have to read a lot of staffs in order to make it work? I would be obliged if you could give me some steps on how to do it. I can't stand windows any more

I want to connect my Debian Squeeze machine to my school wireless network with wpa_supplicant.
I think the network uses 802.1X authentication, because when the other students connects to the network for the first time in Windows they enter their username and password then the connection is established. I have asked the the IT staff but they do not known what 802.1X, PEAP EAP etc. is and just say "Enter the login details in the box!".
If I bring a Windows 7 machine to school and successful connects to the network, is it then possible for me to extract the information [and extract a certificate if used on the network] from Windows somehow so i can setup the wpa_supplicant.conf correctly on Debian?
The information I want to extract is which protocols are used, like PEAP,MSCHAP etc.

Using Thunderbird as mail client, I notice an option in the mail account's Server Settings which reads "Use secure authentication" which allow secured transition of your username and password.I also have my own mail server. Hence, how do I enable this functionality for my mail server (I'm using Postfix & Dovecot) ?

i have a small issue, to make our network more secure, i now require outgoing email to require authentication. Now the problem..i have a automated mailer that does not have the option to authenticate. is there a way to allow a certain email address or the local network to send out without authentication? If i cannot do this for a single email user to allow them through with authentication, how would i remove the authentication paramaters in the postfix smtp..

I've been searching around the web for help and have been really pulling my hair on this one. I have a Windows 2003 Server w/ AD on it. I have two linux machine, both running the same version of RHEL 5 (compute-1, compute-4)
When I log into compute-1, and do an "id dhuynh", I get this:
uid=1501(dhuynh) gid=1500(domain users) groups=1500(domain users),2013(dusers),1501(certsvc_dcom_access),1507 (BUILTIN+users)
When I log into compute-4, do do the same command, I get this:
uid=1500(dhuynh) gid=1504(domain users) groups=1504(domain users),1505(certsvc_dcom_access),1501(BUILTIN+user s)
Notice that the uid and gid are different. How do I get them to be the same? This is affective the file permissions in certain shared directories. I've check /etc/samba/smb.conf and they are identical. I also check /etc/nsswitch.conf and they are identical too.

I just set up a new router for our home office. I've enabled traffic logging, and I'd like to have the logs emailed to me. However, in order to configure email-notification, the router needs and outgoing mail server. Forgive me, but I don't really understand the terminology being used here. I've googled this a bit, but I'm not sure I now what "outgoing" vs "incoming" mean in the context. I tried using my gmail account as the outgoing mail server (smpt.gmail.com) but it requires TTLS encryption, and there's no option for that on my router.
So I figured I'd setup a simple mail server on my local network. I have a dedicated server machine, so I'd just configure a mail server there. But I got stumped at the first input box (in the yast module):"Outgoing Mail Server".That's what I wanted to use this server for. What is this "outgoing mail server"? I understand it in a normal emai context (I think) but this is confusing me. I've read through the HowTo on the openSUSE wiki, but it still doesn't answer this question.Isn't there some way to have a simple, local mail server (without MX records and the like) so I can send email from a local machine?

I was asked to install a mail server for the company I work for 'cause the mail fowarding service is getting pretty expensive. As an openSUSE user I decided to use my beloved distro for that task rather than a Windows 2003 Server. I want to avoid using MS Windows OS and use openSUSE so I can introduce this "new" technology to the company. I have the evil () plan to progressively migrate from MS Windows to Linux and this is an excelent opportunity for showing what is Linux capable of. Unfortunately I'm a rooky Linux admin and I could not get any satisfactory results yet. For testing purposes I managed to point an MX record to an static ip address (200.69.219.57) using No-Ip service. I've tested it using dig unitan.sytes.net MX command.
Then I installed openSUSE using 3 hdd, 1 for system files and directories and 2 setting up a RAID 1 array mounted under /var directory because I've read that there is where the e-mails will be stored. I've followed a couple of documents presented in these forums to no avail. I did install the system using LDAP but I could not get/install/create any certificate so users could not authenticate (Dovecot said so)

I think that i lost my memory, because i completely forgot how to accomplish this.
I have a WEB/MAIL server configured to work on a static IP address, lets say 200.11.22.33.
Now I wanna point a domain to that server to get the services up and running, lets say mydom.com ...
The static IP Address is assigned by my Internet Provider.
I'm lost in the part of connecting the domain with the server.
I have the domain DNS pointing to the ISP name servers, but I don't remember if this is the correct way, or if I have to setup my own DNS server.

setting up my LAMP server to send email messages through my cable network SMTP server. If you respond please realize that I am new to linux/apache. I cannot send emails out with the built in email server on Suse and don't even know if it is enabled. I used to do it with my IIS/ColdFusion server but there were options for the outbound SMTP server and authentication. I have searched and think I have to use something called Pear but to be honest the instructions are vague to say the least and it all looks greek to me.

Probably because I don't know what to put in some of the fields. So; all I want to do is to run my own e-mail server for my business. The network is set up, the web server is running, but I'm having no end of trouble with YAST and the e-mail server.I have a single server running open suse 11.3 32 bit. It is attached to a modem/router. I have a static IP address for my registered domain. The server has a static IP address (192.168.1.8 in this case). My server is NOT running either a DHCP server nor a DNS server - there is no need, since there is nothing else on this box. It has only one network connection - eth0.
I'm trying to set up an e-mail server. I have been unable to get an 'advanced' implementation to work because all attempts to create a suitable server certificate fail. So for now I'll stick with a 'standard' set up.I don't know what I should put in such fields as 'outgoing mail server' (I've assumed I should use the FQDN of my server);I've no idea what 'masquerading' is for or what I should do with it;I don't know what I'm supposed to put in the 'outgoing mail server' in the 'authentication' section;I don't know what to put in the 'downloading' section;and I don't know what 'accept remote SMTP connections' does.I can get the server to start, but any attempt to retrieve e-mail from it ends in an authorisation failure - the syslog shows a sign-on attempt from my 'real' IP address and some form of numeric userid which cannot be found. So, if anyone can tell me what to put in YAST to make it work, I'd be a very happy chap.
Yes, I can telnet to 'my.server.my.domain' 25, so something must be right. But my Linux knowledge is not enough to get it working properly.

This has been driving me absolutely crazy for a few days now. I have an e-mail. If I send it from a Windows Server 2003 server via MailEnable, a certain person receives it using Outlook 2003 just fine. If, however, I send the exact same message from an Ubuntu 10 server using SSMTP to relay the e-mail to the exact same MailEnable queue, the recipient receives a messed-up-looking e-mail. There are all kinds of "= " all over the place. The exact same e-mail looks fine on my Ubuntu computer, as well as my Mac, and all of the Windows/Mac computers here at work. Here is an excerpt from the copy they receive:
COMPANY has been communicating with COMPANY as they Agency worked to develop the= COMPANY permit, knowing that this would impact aquatic pesticide applicat= ion. But in December, COMPANY advised us that the COMPANY permit would = also cover any pesticide applications made "on or near any water or water c= onveyance." They described a scenario in which a pesticide applicatio= n made in a field or pasture that had a waterway or ditch in it (even if th= e waterway or ditch was dry) would need a COMPANY permit. This meant th= at the majority of pesticide applications made to crops would need a COMPANY = permit, and would have to comply with all the burdensome paperwork requirem= ents plus all of the pesticide application records would be available to th= e public for review.
What on Earth is happening? I'm using PHP's Mail_Mime to send the mail, if that matters.
I have tried testing this on an in-house netbook, running XP and Outlook 2003, same as them, and it looks fine. Unfortunately though, it's happening for more than one person, with different companies, in different states. Is it maybe an Outlook thing? Or a firewall?
Here are the headers they sent me, when I requested them earlier:

Can this be done? A company is currently running a postfix mail server. They got a new server and, while the users are migrated, they need to have the messages delivered on BOTH servers.
I thought it could be easily done in postfix: deliver locally AND forward mail to new server, but all solutions I found would deliver the messages in just ONE place.

I'm trying to configure postfix so smart daemon can send out notifications emails. My system will need to send emails to a mail server that is on the same local network. I have not had much luck in getting this to work, and am confused on what I need to setup to do this and how to set it up. Does my system need to be apart of the same domain as the mail server? If so, how do I do this? Is there any restrictions sending emails from the command line as the root user? Do I need to configure a relayhost?
Basically all I need to do is send emails to a local mail server, i.e. a mail server on the same local network. I do not need to receive emails. I am rather clueless as to how to set this all up, and what I need for this basic email functionality. I have read and tried many postfix configuration tutorials, but when I try to send out a test email to a email address on the local network mail server I always get "Connection refused" to the server and deferred or bounced status on my test email.
