Networking :: Setting Up A Subnet On A Wireless Network?

Sep 13, 2010

I'm living at a friend's right now, and he's got a wireless access point in the house that I set my laptops wlan0 interface to route through the eth0 to my desktop. It's been working fine for internet sharing and internal networking ( ssh and ftp ) between the laptop and the desktop, but there's a problem with both subnets being able to communicate with each other, and I haven't been able to solve it with DNAT either.

The wireless access point is 192.168.0.1 and has its own lan on 192.168.0.0/24 of which my laptop is 192.168.0.5. I setup the little subnet I created by routing with the laptop to 192.168.1.0/24 and my desktop is 192.168.1.50. With shorewall I can configure iptables to DNAT all of my ssh traffic destined to 192.168.0.5 to 192.168.1.50, but the problem seems to occur when ssh on my desktop fails to connect rather than the DNAT failing.

Using iptraf I've seen that all of the routing does work properly, because I can see on the connection in iptraf that only the SYN packet is being sent from a 192.168.0.x address, there is no ACK packet sent back. I believe this is because in the connection dialog it always shows a 192.168.0.x ip as the source of the connection, but I don't have a route to 192.168.0.0/24 from 192.168.1.0/24 setup and I'm unsure of how to do so.

I'm pretty much in over my head because I don't know what is wrong, I thought it should work like this. Everything else from port configurations, to the configurations of the software itself seems fine so I don't think it's anything like that preventing a connection, but I can't think of what it would be aside from the lack of routing between each subnet.

Is there anyway to just add a route so that 192.168.1.0/24 and 192.168.0.0/24 can communicate with each other directly? I know there should be, I'm just not at all sure how it would be done.

Networking :: VLAN With 2 Router And 2 Subnet - Is Device In Different Subnet Works

Jul 22, 2011

I have TWO L3 + router switch (say switch1 and switch2). I created VLAN100 with VLAN ID 100 in both the switches. I created router 192.168.1.1/24 in Switch1. I created router 192.168.2.1/24 in Switch2. Switch1 is connected with 1.x/24 PCs. PCs are configured with 1.1 gateway. Switch2 is connected with 2.x/24 PCs. PCs are configured with 2.1 gateway. Both Switch1 and switch2 are connected by a trunk to carry VLAN100 data.

1)I have few PCs of 1.x connected to say Switch1 Is it possible for PC with IP 192.168.1.100(x) to ping PC with IP 192.168.2.100(y)?What are the configuration required in both switches to make them communicate ? All the device in both the subnets should ping/communicate with each other.

2)Move PC (192.168.1.100) to switch2. Move PC (192.168.2.100)to switch1.What will happen when PC(1.100) ping (2.100) and vice versa? What will happen when PC(say 1.80 in switch1) pings PC (say 1.100 in switch2) and vice versa? What will happen when PC(say 1.80 in switch1) pings PC (say 2.100 in switch1) and vice versa?

Ubuntu Networking :: Change Subnet Mask "ONLY", Without Touching Any Other Setting?

Apr 5, 2010

I am using ubuntu Lucid and connected to a network with windows machines. Our network admin changed some settings in the network, and all machines need to change their subnet masks to access local machines (e.g. I am getting "unable to mount" message when I try to connect other Windows PC's on the network.)

If I open the connections panel, and "Edit" the "Auto eth0", I can get: IPv4 Settings -> Method -> Manual -> Addresses -> Add .And I am pretty sure I will put new subnet mask address into "Netmask" box, what to put others? Namely:

IP Address, Netmask, Gateway and below:
DNS Servers, Search Domains

I can get some info about my network connection by right clicking network icon on the panel, and select "Connection Information" Tried to fill manual settings with some of those info (the ones made some sense to me) but I still cannot mount windows network drives, plus my internet connection dies. So, is there any way to change Subnet Mask "ONLY", without touching any other setting.

Server :: DNS Server Not Reachable From Different Subnet Intermittently

Aug 27, 2010

We are having two DNS servers working as master and slave in our DMZ network subnet.DMZ network consist other servers also, but only the DNS servers intermittently becomes unreachable (no ping response) from different subnets whereas the internal communication (within subnet) happens at that time. From the DNS server we are unable to ping gateway ip also when the issue arises. We tried changing the port where DNS servers connected in DMZ switch and even reformatted the OS and reconfigured DNS but nothing seems to be working. We even tried changing the IP address of the server but after few days the New IP Address also gets affected

We google around a lot tying to fix the issue but no solution has yet come up.We are not even sure whether it is server issue or a network issue.

Server :: Getting Samba Shares To Work Across Subnet Boundaries

Jul 8, 2011

My environment in a nutshell is like this:
- I'm a member of a Windows AD domain environment that spans many different subnets.
- My client workstation (Windows XP) is part of this domain and resides on one subnet.
- The server I'm trying to get Samba working on (SLES 10) is part of the same domain but resides on a different subnet.
- I want to access shares on the SLES 10 box from my workstation.

Here is what does work:
1. I can ping the workstation from the SLES box, both by hostname and ip.
2. I can ping the SLES box from my workstation, both by hostname and ip.
3. netstat -an shows that the SLES box is listening on ports 139 and 445.
4. I can telnet from my workstation to the SLES box on ports 139 and 445.
5. Output from smbclient -L coolserver (hostname obfuscated):

Code:
Anonymous login successful
Domain=[COOLDOMAIN] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.5.8-30.4-2516-SUSE-CODE10-x86_64] .....

Code:
Enter cooluser's password:
Domain=[COOLDOMAIN] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.5.8-30.4-2516-SUSE-CODE10-x86_64]
smb: >
So, cross-subnet communication seems to be working in a general sense and I have verified that my share is present and accessible by my chosen user id.

Here's what doesn't work (from the workstation):
1. Output from net view \coolserver:
Code:
System error 64 has occurred.
The specified network name is no longer available.

2. Output from net view \coolservercoolshare:
Code:
System error 5 has occurred.
Access is denied.

3. Same output as above if I try to connect via IP.
However, when I run any of the above commands from my workstation, I see the following in log.smbd on the SLES box:

Code:
coolworkstation (10.49.140.36) connect to service coolshare initially as user cooluser (uid=12171, gid=500) (pid 29039)
[2011/07/08 00:39:29.098422, 1] smbd/service.c:1251(close_cnum)
coolworkstation (10.49.140.36) closed connection to service coolshare

I'm not really sure how to interpret this because those are the exact same entries that get logged when I connect to the share locally, via the smbclient utility on the SLES box, which works fine... but from the Windows box I get the "Access is Denied" or "The specified network name is no longer available" errors. I also occasionally see this in log.smbd:

Code:
[2011/07/08 01:01:19.858308, 1] smbd/server.c:240(cleanup_timeout_fn)
Cleaning up brl and lock database after unclean shutdown
[2011/07/08 01:01:33.828692, 0] printing/print_cups.c:108(cups_connect)
Unable to connect to CUPS server localhost:631 - Connection refused
[2011/07/08 01:01:33.832127, 1] smbd/server.c:282(remove_child_pid)
Could not find child 29781 -- ignoring

I don't know if that is relevant. I created the Samba user via the smbpasswd utility and my smbusers file maps the system user directly to the Samba user, both of which have the same password. Here is my smb.conf:

Code:
[global]
workgroup = COOLDOMAIN
netbios name = coolserver
domain master = no
preferred master = yes
local master = yes
wins support = no .....

My workstation and the SLES box are both pointing to the same WINS server, which services the entire domain (which is also one of the DC's and one of the DNS servers). I'm really not sure what's going on. I'm guessing it probably has something to do with the subnet boundaries or the WINS configuration or something along those lines. I just don't understand because the smb daemon seems to be logging "successful" sessions from my workstation... but then the session just insta-closes.

CentOS 5 Networking :: DHCP Multi-Subnet From Single Server?

Oct 24, 2010

I've got a bit of a question. My network is laid out like this:

The role assignments are thus:

Firewall - sorts out the passing through to the 3 different networks, and acts as the traffic proxy.
Windows 2003 server - Does Active Directory and DNS
CentOS server - FTP and DHCP

Now, my problem is I need the CentOS server to be able to assign IP address to both networks, however, the CentOS server can *ONLY* be connected via the one interface to the firewall. It needs to assign the Windows 2003 server and the eth0 of the firewall an IP address via static DHCP, but it also needs to able to assign the clients dynamically via any address in the 10.23.1.0/24 range. I was thinking that I would be able to create static only assignments for the servers via their MAC addresses, and only have 1 dynamically assignable entry for the clients, and then get the firewall to allow ports 67 and 68 to flow freely between eth0 and eth1, but I wasn't entirely sure of the best way to do all this.

Ubuntu Networking :: Ltsp Server Subnet - Log Clients To The Parent Domain?

Mar 10, 2011

I have an Edubuntu server with two nics joined to the primary windows domain and I can log on with domain credentials and everything is AOK. I used LikewiseOpen 6 to join the server to the primary domain. So, on my Edubuntu server eth1 is connected to the primary domain and has a static IP. eth2 also has a static IP and is the DHCP for the thin client subnet, connected to a switch. IP forwarding is enabled.

DOMAIN - eth1 - Edubuntu Server - eth2 (SUBNET) - switch - clients

So far, so good: I can log on the thin clients with one of the local accounts specified on the Edubuntu server and with that account I can surf the net and, if I supply domain credentials, browse the primary domain. Problem I have is:

I can't work out how to log on to the primary domain with a Active Directory account directly from a thin client. If I try DOMAINuser to log on, after giving the password, the password screen refreshes and 'domainuser@11.*.21.*'s password' appears under the blank password box. The IP in that message is the IP for the subnet and not the primary domain. I feel like I'm miss-understanding some basic simple step but I just can't figure it out.

on /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
# Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5751 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express

# File: ifcfg-eth0

[code]....

then I can access via ssh by two addresses the one I got from dhcp (10.17.148.223) and the static one (10.17.148.26) I put ifconfig and and 10.17.148.223 appear on eth0 I restart my server and I just can access from 10.17.148.223 I have to put

ifdown eth0
ifup eth0

Again...to access by my static ip, y can access my page by its dns on my server, but I cant access from other computer...so, I guess when my static adress appears on ifconfig I would be able to access my page from other computer...
