I am on mac os x and whenever I make aliases in my apache config file to point to folders outside of main web document root folder, I get access forbidden. I have chmod -R 777 the whole destination directory (to test it) and still no go. Access forbidden. I have also tried pointing directly to [URL].

Can anyone tell me what the pros and cons are between heirloom-mailx vs mailutils? This is for ubuntu 10.04 LTS. AT this point my only purpose is to use the mail command line program to occasionally send log output to email aliases.

I am able to send a mail message to myself from a server without any problem...
But after I have updated /etc/aliases and added the line for all of root's mail to be routed to me....
Added:
root: myemail@company.com
and ran newaliases to implement it....
If I send a mail message to root, it does not get routed to my email...

I'm setting up a full server configuration on Fedora, moving it from Mandriva which sadly faces a rather uncertain future. Things are going well and I will be ready (and more familiar with Fedora) in time to upgrade to Fedora 15.
What I have done so far in regard to networking setup:
I first removed Network Manager and replaced it with the network service (chkconfig --level 25 network on). That put an end to the overwriting of /etc/hosts, which now reads simply:

I wrote a small script :
#cat myscript.sh
NEWFILE=dojas.sh
touch $NEWFILE
in that script I create some alias commands an pipe them to a new shell script (called dojas.sh) however after execution of that script , I do not see the aliases jan1 and jan2 in my terminal. Even if I execute the dojas.sh srcipt manually , I do not see the aliases in the alias output of my terminal. The only way I can make the aliases active is do the following : cat dojas.sh copy and paste the alias rules, and they are active in my session. How can I make sure that I can activate aliases and they are active in my terminal from a script ?
Note : I am not interested in .bashrc file, I want them to be active in my current session.

I have /var on it's own partition. Should i direct mail, in /etc/alises, sent to root to my normal local user or will /var end up getting filled up with mail, if i do that? Also:I went on the forums for dynDNS.com, explaining that i was setting up a network that includes a web server and a mail server. They rightly pointed out that i only needed to set up a DNS A record for webserver.dyndns.org. The mail server would be located by this DNS A record, as both machines share the same external I.P address(the external I.P of my ADSL router). So my mail addresses could be me@webserver.dyndns.org. So both machines would be reachable with the same DNS A record, and port-forwarding on my ADSL router would determine which host got which requests. That's what they said i should do for my scenario.
Bearing this in mind what should the values of $myhostname, $mydomain, $mydestination and $myorigin be?
My current thoughts, on the simplest way to do this, are:If $myhostname is mailserver.webserver.dyndns.org, then $myorigin can be webserver.dyndns.org, then $mydomain is webserver.dyndns.org and $mydestination has it's DEFAULT setting(mydestination = $myhostname localhost.$mydomain localhost). This the simplest workable approach right?, if not what are the best values for these parameters?.Also I have /var on it's own partition. Should i direct mail, in /etc/alises, sent to root to my normal local user or will /var end up getting filled up with mail, if i do that?

For a project that I have been assigned to, I need to send emails to a business partner(business_partner.com) from one production server. However, my emails neither reach their destination nor bounce back to me.
Working with our business partner's IT support, the following error was discovered in their maillogs:
Quote:
Further analysis by my IT support shows that emails are successfully sent out ("Message accepted for delivery"):
Quote:
The app I coded is not using a public internet email address (e.g. me@hidden_domain_name.com) to send these notifications.
Instead, it uses an intranet email address (the server's where my code resides: user_name@servername.hidden_domain_name.com).
We created an alias but it made no change. Would adding my public internet email address to "trusted-users" file (we use sendmail)

I've got a server with several different virtual hosts on them, e.g. host1.com, host2.com, host3.com.
Is there a way I can set up an email alias just for an individual domain?
e.g. I want to set up help@host2.com, but not to have help@host1.com or help@host3.com.
I can't see how to do this in the /etc/aliases file...

I'm behind a modem router with firewall and SElinux enabled by default - but checking my mail this morning I noticed several ' delivery failures ' ( allegedly ) from hotmail referring to mail I hadn't sent. When I checked the spam folder for the on-line side of my mail account there were more failure notices. Two points that may be relevant, one is the recent Hotmail exploit, the other is that this only occurred with the address I use for railway matters, and some people cc to everybody, so it's odds on that address is on a good few computers. On one occassion when I checked my spam folder on-line I found spam which claimed to be from myself, so I know the ' send ' address can be spoofed, is this the explanation, or is it a new kind of attack linked to the Hotmail exploit?

I'm looking for a solution for sendmail to limit the number of emails send per miniute per IP. For example all my local computer user with ip 192.x.x.x need to able to send 10 emails/minite (emails, not connections!. The rest of the world can send for example 200 emails/minute to the mailserver. If the amount of emails per minute is exceeded, sendmail needs to block receiving emails from the spesific IP. I want to do this to stop spaming from my local network. Is it possible?

I want to send a PGP encrypted file to a friend who (unfortunately) probably doesn't even have any idea what PGP is. He runs Windows XP. I know I can encrypt and decrypt PGP files easily and freely on Ubuntu, but I have no idea about how to handle PGP in XP... I tried downloading a PGP file in an XP virtual machine to find out, and Windows was pretty much unable to identify the file type. What kind of software on Windows (that is completely free and trustworthy) would be able to decrypt my PGP files?

I have been tasked with sending a kill -s SIGHUP (a reload) to a Daemon process owned by root running on a centOS 5.4 machine.
Obviously, Apache cannot normally do this, so I'm going to have to use the sudoers file.
My problem is, how do I allow the Apache user to only run the kill command? nothing else.
in testing, I've gotten Apache to basically run every command prefixed with sudo and no password prompting. But I want the added security to only run the kill command without the password being prompted everything else should prompt for a password.
I'm trying to understand the sudoers file, and i must say, its non-trivial.
is there a simple 1 line I can put in the sudoers file like
PHP Code:
apache ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /bin/kill

I have got a running mail server on CentOS5.4 Final using Zimbra free edition. . Assume that domain is organization.com.local And it is running fine with users created and bugzilla running on the same machine can send mails using this server. But it can obviously send messages to the internal users. There is this option to configure it to use external mail server to send mails outside the network but my external smtp server needs an authentication. Is it possible to configure it this way to use my external server to send mails from internal domain to say gmail?

I've got a working Virtual Postfix server running with mysql doing user authentication. I have a support email address set as support@hostname.com, which has 5 aliases associated; user1, user2, user3, user4, and user5. When an email is sent to support@hostname.com, all 5 users receive the email, just as planned. What I'm looking to do is when an email is sent to support@hostname.com to have it rotate through the members of the alias group. That way all members of the group get support emails evenly and not everybody all at once. Is this possible?

I have a server with a couple of sites on it. Some of them have a webform where people can send them emails that they are interested in their work etc. though the "To:" and "From:" adress can't be change by the enduser, you can only enter text and press send. However it seems that someone (not on the server) has found a hole/exploit to use those webforms to send mails to who ever he wants.. I have the webserver setup with ssmtp (simple smtp) and it just forwards the mail sent from the server to my mail-server and there on it sends it out on the internet. If I check my log on the mail-server I can see the whole smtp session, where it's comming from and where it's going etc. I see that it comes from my webserver and over there I only have these log entries:
Oct 6 22:04:47 ettan2 sSMTP[1771]: Sent mail for itaumail@itau.com.br (221 2.0.0 Bye) uid=204 username=torget outbytes=3290
There are loads of those log entries, mostly at after office-hours between 17:00 and 7:00 I have scanned through all the Apache logs and can't find Anything that point to the e-mail addresses used or something like that. The reason I found this out was because he tries to send to a host that doesn't allow connection on port 25 so all the mails got stuck in the queue, over 1000 atm.. I'm using Apache 2.2 and Postfix 2.6 on a Debian Lenny install. What can I do to find out how he's doing this and close the "exploit"? Who would you recommend to setup the mail() thing in PHP for most security?

I am looking for a utility that would do the following:1. Be run manually on a list of files whose sizes should not change, to get a control file containing the sizes of each file.2. Subsequent manual runs would report any changes in size of any of the files in the list, and allow option to accept the new sizes.3. Be run as a cron job to check for changes in the file sizes and send an email alert if a change has occurred since the last time it was run.The purpose is to detect possible hacks of key files on a website. It would not include files expected to change, but just those that should not change. It would be run manually a few times to get the control list one wants to monitor.

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 on my laptop with the entire 500gb setup as encrypted LVM. This has worked well for several months with no problems. During this time i have been backing up the data to an external usb drive (1tb) on a regular basis. The usb drive was not encrypted. So, I thought it would be a good idea to encrypt the backup drive too. I wiped out the backup drive and set it up as one large encrypted lvm and mbr. This seemed to work fine but immediately afterwards I decided to erase that and set it up as encrypted lvm guid instead of mbr. I couldn't delete it while logged into my desktop so i decided to do it from a bootable gparted usb stick. In gparted i erased the 1TB backup drive once again and planned on setting it up the way I wanted once I was logged back into my ubuntu desktop. Now I cant boot into my desktop with the following errors:
cryptsetup: evms_activate is not available b0d) does not begin with /dev/mapper/
Then after waiting for a few minutes I get an error followed by (initramfs)
When booting from a live version of ubuntu the 250MB boot patition is recognized and 500 partion is there but it is labeled as empty/unused.
Also, I did choose to use the exact same passphrase as what is used on the main bootable drive when I set up the encrypted partition on the external 1TB drive.

I have an Ubuntu 10.04 machine at home and apache setup on it (files are located in a Truecrypt volume). The reason for the web server being that I wanted to access my files wherever I'm at (i.e. hotel, work, hotspots, etc...). So far, it's worked out great for me seeing as a I can http download my files (or stream media files). However, I am often on a public hotspot and I know it's a matter of time before someone finds the webserver on my computer. I have the machine firewalled and password protected (via .htaccess), but either way I don't want people looking in on my computer.
The problem: I have used Truecrypt for a long time and completely trust using the program to encrypt/unencrypt a volume container to store my files. Usually, I would remote desktop into my computer and mount/unmount the volume when I needed it. However, after time it get's really annoying to do this. So I eventually figured out how to setup a bash script to automatically do this for me (which I put on the usb part of my phone). What I wanted to do was to be able send the bash script to my Ubuntu machine (via ftp from my phone) and have Ubuntu automatically run the script. Is this possible? What programs do I need on Ubuntu?
I was thinking about using something like cron, but that is for scheduled times. I don't really have a set time in which I need my files, it's pretty sporadic depending on how much I travel. Thus the need for being able to remotely mount the volume when I need it.
Summary: I need a way for Ubuntu to read a folder every minute or so to check for bash scripts to run. I want to be able to send the bash script via ftp from my phone, have Ubuntu run the script, then delete itself (so as to not store the password). I already know the script in which to mount the Truecrypt volume and how to send the file via ftp from my phone. It's really a matter of what program to use in Ubuntu to find and run the script.
