As I'm interested in user-behaviour-information-security I would like to know what I�ll have to turn off or to uninstall to make the ubuntu-pc-usage as anonymous as possible (no musicbrainz, cddb, or alike).I want ubuntu not to send any data to third-party-users.

The ten machines will have /home/student01..10 and /home/linsig01..10 as users. We want /home/student01 to be able to explore and sudo so they can learn to administer their personal machines at home. We don't want them to be able to modify (sudo) /home/linsig01. I've seen the tutorial on Access Control Lists but I'd like other input so we get it right the first time.

We have been satisfied to this point with a netapp serving nfs/cifs and keeping a tight reign on nfs exports.Some of these projects have started asking us to provide access restricted sub-folders of the project space based on different groups that contain a user subset of the primary group.
We have a linux machine that serves as a version control front end to the netapp, mounting the project spaces via nfs. People are now mounting their project space via sshfs to this "front end" and sharing the root password of this sshfs client with everyone in their project, in turn creating a security hole to access the so called restricted sub-folders. I know all the obligatory responses referring to irresponsible user behavior but would like to see how others have addressed something like this where user behavior seems out of control.

View 14 Replies View Relatedi am trying to set up a mail server that will support users in a LAN in my school. I am using postfix on a Mandrakelinux distro.
I can send mail when I am root to the other user on my (same) machine both when in command line (mail command) and on Graphical mail client (Kmail ) but the user (sam) cannot send mail to the root account on either interfaces.
I followed the postfix configuration settings on John_Wiley_-_Redhat_Linux_Networking_and_System_Administration_3rd_Edition.
So, I have mail server ( posfix ) and ldap server, they works fine. I can add/delete users from posfix, and they can send / receive mails to/from any address. At same time my ldap server works fine, I have also users in it, my "simple" question would be...if I have user "test1" in ldap, what I have to do to connect--enable that user to send mails ?

The connection is not dropped, and nothing shows up in any system logs. Both the wl and b43 drivers have this problem, but it works fine under vista.

I know it might sound silly but is there any special Windows compatibility mode when burning a data DVD (containing photos) on linux? It's not the first time that I've burned some photos on a DVD and my Windows friends can't open them. Either the dvd doesn't open at all or it shows that the DVD is full but doesn't display any files whatsoever. When I try the DVD back in Linux (both my desktop and laptop) everything is fine. I've got a relatively new burner and my friends don't have old ones either. I usually use xfburn (sometimes k3b) Is it me doing something wrong? I didn't burn it at the slowest speed, but it wasn't the maximum speed either.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install the bucktooth gopher server on a Windows xp laptop. I have cygwin 1.7 installed, and I recently installed the xinetd and perl packages. I successfully (?) configured bucktooth, but I have had trouble with the connection cutting out partway through (partial directory listings, half-blank pictures, etc.). I used tintin++ to get the connection's data directly, and found that in addition to occasionally missing lines, some lines are duplicated.
I then ran the bucktooth server directly (to bypass xinetd), and found that the server was giving consistent, correct output. I then added a test service to xinetd (m4), but after connecting to this test service (through tintin++), xinetd would respond with one line of unexpected data (such as "gf" or a line from a recent bucktooth directory listing) and close the connection. Could this be a broken xinetd? My xinetd configuration:

I know I can encrypt and decrypt PGP files easily and freely on Ubuntu, but I have no idea about how to handle PGP in XP... I tried downloading a PGP file in an XP virtual machine to find out, and Windows was pretty much unable to identify the file type. What kind of software on Windows (that is completely free and trustworthy) would be able to decrypt my PGP files?
