Security :: Script To Send A Command VIA Terminal To Wipe An Entire Machine Of Data?
Sep 16, 2010
Is there a script I can use to send a command VIA terminal to wipe an entire machine of data? If for example there is an intrusion valuable data can be at risk, it would need to be erased.

As I'm interested in user-behaviour-information-security I would like to know what Ill have to turn off or to uninstall to make the ubuntu-pc-usage as anonymous as possible (no musicbrainz, cddb, or alike).I want ubuntu not to send any data to third-party-users.

I open up 2 xterms on my desktop, A(/dev/pts/0) and B(/dev/pts/1).
I can write from A to B using redirection e.g. echo "test" > /dev/pts/1
How do I run a command from A on B? e.g. "clear"
Ideally I should be able to do this from a script.

I was actually looking for a way to clear up the second terminal.

I accidentally made a mistake of deleting the data I was suppose to shred. I cut and pasted sensitive documents from my external hard drive into my laptop. I want to shred those documents from my external hard drive but since I already did a cut/paste command those files are no longer accessible from my external hard drive. Is there a way I can fix this?

I have both desktop and notebook with Ubuntu 10.10.In the desktop, net domain correctly displays domain and server name, but in the notebook both appear as blank. Maybe that's the reason why I can't see the shares in the desktop from the notebook.How do I set the domain and machine name from the terminal command line?

Now, I use Fedora Core (version 8) with core linux OS 2.6
I have some file data with size about 2G and I want to burn (write) this file to DVD rewrite.
I know linux OS can install software to burn data to DVD, but I don't have permission to install more software. I only use command line over Terminal (Gnome Terminal).

I'm attempting to do a low level wipe of a server in our office. I originally attempted to use DBAN but it wouldn't recognize the disks.
I've now moved on to attempting to use a Live Boot of Ubuntu 10.10 on a USB drive.
I'm using the following terminal command - sudo dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda bs=1M
When I did this the first time it simply wiped the USB drive that had Ubuntu on it.
What do I need to do in order to have it wipe all 4 disks on the server instead of the USB Drive?

I'm selling my Dell Mini 10 that came with Ubuntu on it. I never really used it much, and the only sensitive things on it were some PHP files with MySQL passwords that I can change on the server if need be. I'm not familiar with command line at all, so I'm having trouble figuring out the best way to wipe the SSD. I already reinstalled the OS using the recovery disk from Dell which said it would 'delete' the contents of my hard drive. I'm not sure if the job it did is suitable. What's the best way for me to make sure my data can't be recovered? Is there anything with a GUI I can download to help with this?

I installed kdesvn. I then connected to my svn server. So far so good. Unfortunately because the connection is through svn it kept asking me for my password. I had put a password on the security locker, it was annoying. I googled how to wipe the security locker so I could reset the password. This is where my troubles start. I used rm ... /kde/path/to/locker
When I did this, kdesvn stopped asking for my password and times out with an error when trying to connect. I then uninstalled kdesvn and kompare, then used rm .. /kde. I then reinstalled kdesvn and the problem isn't fixed. How do I do a completely fresh installation of kdesvn + locker so that it will start asking for my password again?

I was reading a website about securely wiping data from your hard drive with wipe on the right click menu, when I stumbled across part of the article where it talked about journaling filesystems.Article
Quote:
There are three types of journaling: journal, ordered and writeback. Using shred, with an ext3 file system presents the user with the problem of secure deletion because it can only really be effectively used with ordered and writeback journals. It also lists ext4 as a journaling file system in the article, so I looked up the wikipedia page on it and I also found this:
Delayed allocationExt4 uses a filesystem performance technique called allocate-on-flush, also known as delayed allocation. It consists of delaying block allocation until the data is going to be written to the disk, unlike some other file systems, which may allocate the necessary blocks before that step. This improves performance and reduces fragmentation by improving block allocation decisions based on the actual file size. So I am confused about this delayed allocation thing. My thoughts are that ext3 and other journaling filesystems are bad to use with secure wipe when they are set on journal mode because that writes the file to the journaling sector as well as to the hard drive. Apparently, in ext3, the default was ordered mode. I would like to know if anyone has any idea if the ext4 file system on karmic 64bit is hazardous to the security of using the wipe command.

I experienced freeze with Fedora 12. I haven't had any issues up until now at all with stability in Fedora. Since then the problem has persisted with a freeze about once a week and then over the last few days it has started freezing daily. I thought at first that it was a problem with an update and that it would get sorted out with another update but that doesn't seem to be the case.
I installed FC12 within days of it's release and I've had no issues until now.
The odd thing is that the machine only freezes when I'm not using it. I suppose this is a good thing, but it makes it harder to figure out what is causing it.
The entire machine locks up and I'm unable to do anything but use the reset button and get the machine going again. I can not connect via SSH either as all network connections are being refused.
I have looked through the logs and can not find anything odd. There are no kernel panics and there are no Xorg errors.
I'm starting to wonder if this is a hardware issue, but the system drive was just installed in November and hasn't reported any errors when I check it.

in the middle of script, i need to send the output of (send command on line 8) to a file
#!/usr/bin/expect
spawn telnet 172.20.64.133
expect "ENTER USERNAM <"
[cod]....
i treid the below on line 8 :
1- send "show command;
" > logfile.txt : gives an error extra character after the "
2- logsave logfile.txt 'send "show command;
" ': error invalid command
3- i simply tried to send the output of the whole script to file logsave /home/logfile ./script : seems that logsave work under root only
4- ./script > logfile : the problem with this is that the output of echo or (read "enter your id") command will not be displayed on the screen (actually nothing will be displayed, i have to open the log file to see the output). is there any way to save the log of the "send" ? or to save the log of the complete script without hiding the output on the screen?

I deleted my hd from an ubuntu 10.10 liveCD system by trying to create a new partition table with gparted. I just wanted to restore the partition table and clicked on "create partition table"apply.Now the hole hd is an unallocated file system, so without any partitions. There had been 3 ext4 partitions.
Because I did it from an liveCD, all data should be save? Is there a way to search for partitions on the hard disk and get a new old partition table and write it to the mbr?I searched a lot already (with a very slow mobile internet connection)..

So I am trying to learn a little about Cygwin and rsync. I'd like to rsync some data from a Windows machine to a Linux machine. I've got Cygwin installed but I can't figure out how to tell Cygwin were rsync will be pulling the data from; basically, how to set the directories that I want to be rsnyc'd. I've googled and googled but I can't seem to find the answer to this exact question.

I started my Debian 6 machine today and the terminal (Alt+Ctrl+F1) is only using the top left area of the screen. The resolution is correct but the whole screen just isn't filled with text. When I log in and run startx the GUI is in a very small resolution.
I've tried everything I can find with GRUB_GFXMODE and GRUB_GFX_PAYLOAD but nothing works.

Is there one command that will let me record an entire terminal session (with any possible errors) to a text file while also seeing all output on screen too? I know it can be done for individual commands, but I'm looking to do this for an entire session where the individual commands will be normal (i.e., not piped into tee, etc.). It would be even better if the command prompt is captured too. The obvious utility of this makes me think someone surely has come up with a solution long ago (probably in the 60's).(I'm sure it goes without saying, but subsequent output in that session should be appended to the file. The file should contain the full history, with all output and errors, of the session.)

However saying that, i'm doing a full reinstall just incase.

I recently installed Fedora 11 64bit and I am curious about encrypting my entire file system for security purposes. I've been on Google for a while now and I keep finding info on how to encrypt a specific folder or home directories but nothing on the entire file system (or I'm missing something big here). It's hard for me to imagine that it isn't. If so, do I need to encrypt the partition my file system is on before installing it? What software should I use? There seems to be so many, it's difficult to keep them all straight.
