SUSE / Novell :: Fstab Entry To Mount Second Hard Disk?

Feb 5, 2010

I am running SUSE 11.1 on a 80Gig IDE HDD, I have added a 160 SATA HDD which I wish to use as storage.
fdisk reports it as /dev/sda1 - W95 fat 32 LBA. What would the fstab entry be to make the disk mount automatically on boot, so that it shows on the desktop ready for use.

Ubuntu :: Fstab Entry For 2nd Disk Fails To Mount - Can't See Any Error

Mar 15, 2011

One entry I have put in fstab results in the failure of a partition to be mounted at boot time. I get the message:

Code: The disk drive for /media/WinXP is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery If I choose M and enter the command: Code:mount -t ntfs /dev/sdb1 /media/WinXP then I get no error message, but the partition still doesn't seem to be mounted, when boot completes.

I don't understand this failure. I have created my fstab file using UUIDs to boot Ubuntu on my dual boot machine. It works fine, booting from the hard-disk which is Master on my Secondary IDE channel. For Ubuntu booting the MBR and grub menu are on this disk. The default is to boot Ubuntu , but with an option to select Windows Xp.

As an aside, I can set an option in my BIOS to make the Master disk on the Primary IDE channel the first disk, rather than the second disk. Then the system boots from the MBR on this Primary IDE channel and boots only to WinXP. That works fine.

When running Ubuntu I use space on the Windows disk (on the Primary IDE channel) to hold backups of key Ubuntu files in case I loose Ubuntu - as I did for the past few days. So, to mount this partition I inserted this line into my fstab:

Code:
UUID=0e4851c44851ab6b/media/WinXPntfsnosuid, nodev, allow_other00 I know the UUID is correct because I have checked it with blkid. But the partition is not mounted at boot time. I don't even get an icon for the partition on my desk top. It appears in the 'places' menu, as unmounted, but mounts as soon as I click on it. However, this causes some of my linux apps, which want to load and save to this partition, to post an error message until I have manually mounted it via clicking on it in the Places menu. I want to avoid this manual step by having the partition automatically loaded at boot time. What am I doing wrong?

SUSE :: Mount - Fstab - Permissions ?

Sep 25, 2009

On my Suse 11.1 computer, I'm only able to run 'mount' as root, but this screws up the permissions somehow, in that my external drives are now read only when I am normal user. I can plug my external drives to my mac osx laptop via usb or firewire, and I can read, write, and execute. As su, I can mount the drives using usb on my suse computer, but only as read only.

Optimally, I want to edit the fstab file to auto mount these external drives, and then have samba run to make the drives available (i.e. rw) on laptop.

NOTE:
1. I created the file systems on a laptop (mac osx) which has different user name than my suse 11.1 computer.

2. I tried to use chown to manually force user:group to be Mike:users instead of root:root, but the external drives still are 'read only.' Trying different options in column 4 fstab file kept giving same trouble, but I can now get user:group = 99: 99 (not sure what that means).

SUSE / Novell :: Automount USB Disk Without Being Logged In

Nov 30, 2008

I have OpenSuSE 11.0 running on a machine. I want to be able to automount a USB disk but it seems at the moment automounting only works if your logged in to a KDE desktop. That's no use to me as I want the disk to be used by automated processes when available.

How can I set the disk up so that it auto mounts when I plug it in regardless of whether there is an active desktop or console session. It should be able to handle being removed and then reinserted with out a reboot or without having to log on.

SUSE / Novell :: Install Fails To Recognize Ide Hard Drives

Aug 25, 2010

I have an Intel MB (855GME with 6300ESB) that I'm having trouble installing OpenSUSE 11.1 onto the IDE drive. It will install to a SATA drive but for various reasons I need to install on IDE (PATA on 6300ESB). The install fails to find any ide drive (I know the drive/interface works because I can install XP on this same ide drive and boot from it). If I parse the dmesg output I see the message "ata_piix 0000:1f.1 device not available because of BAR 2 (0x0-0x7) collisions". I'm trying to determine if there's some workaround for this. I've tried various kernel parameters and no joy.

I've tried Ubuntu with similar results. Older kernels WILL install onto this same MB/PATA controller (Ubuntu 6.06, 2.6.15 and RHEL4) so it seems that something changed in the ATA driver as the kernel has matured and my bios isn't up to snuff for these pickier drivers.

SUSE / Novell :: Hangs And KDE Is Not Loaded Giving Reason That Disk Is Out Of Space

Feb 26, 2009

I am having dual boot system Opensuse 11.1 and Windows vista. I have allotted about 5 GB space to home partition. Now sometimes I copy/move files from Windows partitions to /home, this is easily done. But when I restart the computer, It hangs and KDE is not loaded giving reason that disk is out of space. I have to work on commandline and delete some files from /home to free some space, only then I can restart the computer normally. This is very annoying. When I copy/move files then Opensuse should immediately give me a warning. It seems nonsense to not start kde.

Ubuntu :: Fstab - Trying To Mount Hard Drive ?

Aug 18, 2010

Installed ubuntu 10.4 on a formatted hard drive IDE. desktop has two other drives , one SATA drive and one SCSI drive. SCSI drive has windows.

Both windows and ubuntu load fine through GRUB2 etc

I had installed WUBI before on the SATA drive and then i uninstalled it.

problem is that when i log in to Ubuntu i see on fdisk

But i cannot access the SATA drive /dev/sda i tried mounting the drive but i get an error saying this is mounted as /dev/sdb5

How do i mount the SATA drive to get access to the drive ? i messed around with this drive when i was using WUBI. i.e. tried to mount it to recover grub but never got it working. Now somehow it seems that this old mounted drive is messing with my current Ubuntu install.

How to recover my fstab is shown below:

Changed the connect sequence in BIOS and mounted the volume using sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1

SUSE / Novell :: How To Mount And Unmount Floppy Within Desktop / Dolphin Filemanager In KDE 4.1?

Feb 23, 2009

Anybody knows how can I mount and unmount a floppy within the desktop and/or dolphin filemanager in KDE 4.1? If I run dolphin I can see a floppy icon on the left, clicking on it seems to activate a reading of the floppy, then I have to go to /media folder and click on /disk folder to display the floppy files, then if a right click on the floppy on dolphin the only option I get is to hide the floppy shortcut, there is no option for unmount the floppy. I tried to make a desktop shortcut to floppy by right clicking on the desktop folder and selecting new device floppy and entering /dev/fd0 on device location, and clicking okay. Even that does not have the unmount command when I right click on the desktop shortcut, so the floppy gets stock in mount state.

also I dont see an applet or the so called plasmanoid when I click on the plasma icon on the right of the task bar and click add widget, on kde 3.5 I have the media applet on the task bar, it worked like a charm, I give a 1000 thanks to the developer of the media applet.

Any ideas on how to mount and unmount my floppy? It is a standard internal floppy, which is connected to the standard floppy controller on the motherboard. The only way to have access to it is logging into kde 3.5 and have the media applet/widget in the taskbar, and then works like a charm, I can mount it or unmount it any time. But I would like to try the new Version 4.1.3 (KDE 4.1.3) "release 72.4" that I'm running. I believe this is the latest from the opensuse 11.1 KDE 4 STABLE repository, so I know I have the latest patches for KDE 4.

General :: How To Add A New Entry To Fstab

Sep 13, 2011

tmpfs 299M 44K 299M 1% /dev/shm
/dev/xvdf 20G 589M 19G 4% /mnt/mongo

But now I'm trying to figure out how to make it auto mount on boot. I understand I need to add a new entry to /etc/fstab, so I perform: $ sed -i '$ a/dev/xvdf /mnt/mongo xfs defaults 1 1' /etc/fstab But, after reboot, it seems that the auto mount didn't work. The device didn't appear in the df -h list.
