Server :: Printer With Ubuntu 9.04

Jul 30, 2010

I have managed to configure a file server using an old PC. This server serves a small network of both PC (windows) and Mac. I would like to use this server as a print server for my network, but with multiple printers attached via USB.

CentOS 5 Server :: Super Slow Windows Printer Properties Dialogue With Samba Printer

Sep 18, 2009

I have a Centos 5.3 server with Samba file shares and a shared Samba printer. I am not running a domain.

I recently changed my windows desktop pc from an XP machine to a vista 64 machine... It has a different user name. Everything went pretty smoothly - and the and the vista machine found the smba printer - and even downloaded the driver from the samba server. he printer works OK - and the file shares are fine.

The only thing which is quite odd - is that the Printer Properties dialogue takes more than 30 seconds to come up - and every action you attempt with the dialogue takes a similar amount of time.

I will include below the essence of my smb.conf:

Server :: Set Up A Fax Server As A Printer For Local Network?

Jun 28, 2009

Folks, I have an old notebook (IBM T23) running as my print server on the home network. Recently my wife needed to fax some documents. No problem, said I, I will just set up a fax server. That was months ago and I have achieved nothing more than dig a deep pit. Sigh.

Could some kind person give me step by step instructions for this?

Setup: LAN including IBM T23 with an external modem (it has an internal winmodem, but I expect using that to be just too hard) and running FC10. This machine currently has the only printer, accessible from all machines on the LAN.

Wish list: Be able to fax from any machine on the network, via the T23->modem. Preferably, to see the fax device as a printer on client machines, so it is a simple matter for my wife to 'print' to the fax. Machines on the LAN are FC10 (wife) and FC11 (me). Ability to receive faxen is not necessary, but if it is feasible I MIGHT try to set up for it too. The phone line is our normal house line, so I don't want the fax to pick up any incoming call unless I instruct it to.

Current status: Hylafax installed on the T23. So far cannot make it recognise the external or internal modems. Have not figured out how to make it appear as a printer on the T23 or over the LAN. The problem is me, but at my advanced age I am not too proud to admit my failing grey matter and ask for help.

Kind regards, Doug.

Ubuntu :: How To Configure Printer / Server

Aug 7, 2011

OK, I have my printer installed properly and it will print a test page from the printers' tool box. But I am getting an error message when trying to print anything else. I have tracked the error to the "printer properties on the local host" panel. The problem is that I do not have my printer published. The PPLH panel says to see " server settings". But, it doesn't tell me where those settings are or what needs to be changed.

Mar 23, 2011

Linux printing appeared to be working fine up until yesterday. Today typing lpq gives the following: lpq Printer 'sdst@other.domain' - cannot open connection - Connection timed out Make sure LPD server is running on the server

The /etc/cups/printers.conf file is properly set, the printers appear in localhost:631 and they are printing test pages. However, all command line print commands seem to be trying to print to sdst@other.domain I don't know why printers.conf is being ignored and why and how sdst@other.domain was added. Seems like it might have been auto-discovered?

# dit: sdst@other.domain was mentioned in /usr/local/etc/lpd.conf I'm not sure why lpd.conf is being used instead of /etc/cups/printers.conf

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Install USB Printer On Server 11.04?

Jul 7, 2011

I installed Server 11.04 and selected the options for the print server and file server. I would like to add a HP Officejet J3680 printer (USB connection) but cannot figure out how. On a remote computer running Ubuntu 11.04 desktop, I tried using the CUPS web interfce but I keep getting the "Unable to connect" message. I installed webmin on the same remote computer and tried installing it that way. That way, I selected "USB Printer 1" and used "generic postscript driver" This did not work. I do not know how to install a printer. I'll use command line on the server if necessary. How is this done?

Ubuntu :: Configure 11.04 Server To Share Printer Using Terminal (not GUI)

Jun 27, 2011

I've got an Ubuntu Server 11.04 running and the primary use of it is to store backup files using Deja Dup, connecting through SSH using shared key (no passwords) authentication. This works on the LAN and WAN, which is what I want. I also want to set up an HP Officejet 5610 MFD to be shared on the LAN only, for printing and scanning. The server obviously doesn't have a GUI.

I've searched and come up with some near misses, but everywhere I try it seems someone is using a GUI on the system serving the printer. See: [URLs]

What I'd really like would be a post like the following one. It seems to be what I'm looking for, but it is from 2006 using Ubuntu 6.## and that build ran on cupsys rather than cupsd if I read correctly. I haven't found an updated guide/post like the one below.

General :: Lsub In Ubuntu Server 9.10 Does Not See HL-2140 Printer

Dec 5, 2009

I bought a Brother HL-2140 usb laserprinter and am trying to add to my ubuntu 9.10 server. So, the first step is to physically connect it to one of the usb ports and use lsusb to see if the printer is being seen:

Code:

As you can see, lsusb does not recognize it no matter which usb port I use. That does confuse me since everything else I connect to this computer's usb ports shows up when I type lsusb. As an example, let me slap a MN510 wireless device to a randomly picked usb port:

Code:

Interestingly enough, dmesg seems to report a printer there:

Code:

So, I tried the same printer in my laptop, which runs ubuntu 9.04 desktop, and it sees the printer fine (and even tries to add it):

Code:

So, I do not think I can blame the printer itself... or printer drives since all I am trying to do right now is to see the stupid printer as a usb device in the usb chain.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Locate Printer Drivers In Network Printer Setup?

Oct 19, 2010

I am trying to set uamsung clx2160N as a standalone network printer on my home network. It is a printer with standalone network capability and is connected directly to my router and has a static IP number. We have a few Windows computers at home and they had no problem detecting the printer, installing the drivers and working. Unfortunately my Ubuntu computer recognises the printer and I can even access it's setup and diagnositcs through its IP number. However when I try to add it as a printer, drivers for it cannot be located. #ve tried setting it up three ways:1. Using Samsung's own setup package - finds printer and all the details it needs to work but offers no drivers2. Using Ubuntu's printer setup - recognises printer but stalls at Searching for Drivers dialog3. Trying to *** printer using CUPS - no problem finding and recognising printer, but when I come to search for the driver I get Internal Server Error.

I have of course been trying to do all of these as root. That's the limit of my knowledge reached and searches on the net aren't helping me either. The printer works fine directly connected via USB, so the drivers are on the computer somewhere. How do I get them set up to use the printer on the network?

Ubuntu Networking :: HP All In One C3180 Printer - Only Gets Recognized As A Printer But There Is No Way To Get It To Scan

Nov 21, 2010

I have managed to install ubuntu server and set it quite nicely to share my files and printers over my network. I have two printers, a Lexmark e232 and a hp C3180 multifunctional printer (i.e. printer+scaner+a copy function). I have no problem installing the Lexmark printer on my windows 7 computers on the network, however, the All in One printer only gets recognized as a printer but there is no way to get it to scan. I have been reading on the web about all in one printers but I don't quite understand what the issues are.

Is there a way for me to get the full functionality of this printer over the network? I think this wouldn't be a problem if there was some sort of software designed by hp that would allow me to add printers that are not directly connected to the computer (via usb) but are shared from another pc on the network.

Server :: Cups How To Delete A Printer?

Jul 2, 2010

Running Debian 5, fairly new install. I have CUPS 1.38 installed. After much work, I got a PPD file for a Dell printer working - albeit not the exact one I need (5330dn), but close enough to work (3100cn). Question: when I look at the list of printers in CUPS, I see a bunch of extra printers that are on the network, but that I didn't add. How do I remove them (ie. I don't want them to be listed)?Going to Administration | Manage Printers shows me a black button named "Delete Printer", but clicking on it gives me an error message of:

Ok, while I'm here, I'll ask 2 other simpler questions:
(2) anyone have the .ppd file for the Dell M5330dn printer? I've spent 90 minutes on the phone w/ the Dell tech support, and those guys are clueless....

(3) I have 4 printers of the same model. the first is working - is there an easy (command line) way of adding the other printers? Ie. can I just copy the /etc/cups/ppd file 3 times, renaming it to my other printer names (and ip addresses)?

Server :: Shared Printer Does Not Print

Jun 26, 2009

A few months ago a client had me build a small file server running OpenSuse for them. They also had me install an HP Designjet 650C on the server and share it on the network for 2 desktops to print to. All went well and there have been zero problems. They use a few specialty apps that don't have good enough FOSS counterparts, so I couldn't talk them into switching the desktops to Linux, although they were very interested in it. One of the desktops runs Vista and has an XP Pro VM on it (they are considering a Linux VM to go with it so they can dip their toes in the water). There was a locally installed HP OfficeJet 5610 on the machine, but printing from the XP VM was a hassle because they had to tell virtualbox to pass the usb interface to the VM, effectively disabling it in Vista. Then to print in Vista again they had to release the interface back to the host OS. The other desktop (running XP) was also unable to print to it. They asked me to install the 5610 on the server and share it like I did the 650C.

Installing it on the server was easy. I just plugged it in and checked to make sure everything was neat and tidy in YaST. It printed flawlessly. I configured the share identically to the way I shared the 650C. I browsed the network from Vista, found the printer, and installed it using Vista's native driver. Then I sent a print to it from Vista and nothing happened. Vista is very slow to communicate with the printer compared to the 650C, but it will eventually report that the print job was successful. The printer never receives the print, though. Where are the print jobs going? The VM and other desktop are as big of a problem. XP does not natively support the 5610, so I have to download a driver from HP's site. The driver uses a stupid binary installer that will not allow the driver to be manually installed. Running the installer works, but the driver will not install until it sees the printer in a usb port. That won't work because we are connecting to it over a network path. Where can I find a driver that can be manually installed?

Ubuntu :: Connect To Samba Printer And File Server With Lubuntu?

Mar 9, 2011

My university provides instructions for connecting to their printers and network shares in Ubuntu. They work pretty smooth, but I've run into a couple of problems when trying to follow these instructions in Lubuntu:

1. Windows Printer via Samba printer is missing under Add-->Network Printer in the printer utility (system-config-printer 1.2.3, same one as in standard Ubuntu) I'm guessing I need to install some samba related packages that standard Ubuntu includes by default, but which ones?

2. To access network disks in standard Ubuntu, for example your pesonal space, you select Go-->Location in Nautilus and enter an address of the format smb://something.university.domain/resource. How can I access such locations with PCManFM?
