Is there a way to find it out without YUM or up2date?

Slackware :: Compile 2.6.37 Kernel Patched With The Autogroup Patch On A Slackware 13.1 System?
Jan 13, 2011it's possible to compile the 2.6.37 kernel patched with the autogroup patch on a Slackware 13.1 system running 2.6.33.4-smp with 2.6.33.4 headers? I just compiled and installed the 2.6.37-autogroup kernel from AUR on my ARCH setup and I like it especially when using firefox with lots of tabs open and other background apps also running. I did notice a speed and smothness difference in my ARCH testing setup with this kernel patch and I can get same results in 13.1??

Jul 27, 2011There is server with 3 hdd mounted to /h1 /h3 /h4 and its a file server contain 3 TB of data (must of them are in zip or rar format), We need to move whole files to the new server.I need a command or bash file to show me the name of files in these partition and the patch of them in the txt log file. (So i can create the link and download all of them in new server with download manager).I tried rsync but its too slow...After we created the links of whole files we will deny all ip address exclude new server IP address in nginx then we can transfer them all fast. (The servers are in 1 datacenter.)

Jul 21, 2011I have this project at work. We are a MS Windows shop, and I am "supposed" to be the linux expert, which means, linux support, it's me. I have worked with linux maintaining PCs at home with different versions of linux since 1995, jumping from Slackware to Ubuntu.
Now, I have two CentOS 5.6 boxes, and I need to control the patching process. the boxes are hosting an application which we don't manage. So. one box in production, one box in development. The idea is that the box in development wil use yum in a standard way and download whatever patches are needed, and the application is tested. When the testing is done (this can take minutes, hours, or days) then the production box gets patched.
The problem is that I need to garantee that exactly the same patches are applied in development and in production.
the development box downloads the patches from the internet, but the production box gets it's patches from the development box, not the internet. I have played around with making local repos on the development box and samba, or rsync the /var/yum/cache, and to change the yum.repo.d CentOS-base.repo to force the prod to go to the dev box, without success.

Nov 16, 2010Just want to refresh and check to make sure I don't make a mistake, but I am spoiled now with my newer OS's, binary apps, etc. and helping out someone right now who has some old servers and some apps need upgrading like proftp, etc. ALL apps are compiled, I have the old src folder, even the config.h file which if I clean the cobwebs will give me the config settings that were used right? Basically I want to do an in place upgrade from an old to new version and don't want to kill what's there, so I am assuming I can do a make with the config.h from the old compile and it should just build with those options, right?

I have never done anything like this and I am a Linux newbie, so I would appreciate a "Kernel Patching for Dummies" version if possible. Apr 2, 2010I have installed a linux server in my office to run 16 machines. Its main use will be a internal mail server but will be also running websites.
I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 server x64 and have got apache running.
I am looking for the simplest more robust solution for smtp, pop3 and imap. I have only ever used qmail before and found it a pain to configure and its getting old so I though I should probably try something new. I have not much experience with running pop3 or imap on linux so would love a suggestion on that.

The site loads slow and clicking a link almost freezes the page for a second. Also, the page loads could be much faster. We've been running mysqltuner and have pretty much optimized all slow queries. Is there anything we can do to fine tune the server for faster and more responsive?

Jan 25, 2011I will be relocating to a permanent residence sometime in the next year or two. I've recently begun thinking about the best way to implement a home-based network. It occurred to me that the most elegant solution might be the use of VM technology to eliminate as much hardware and wiring as possible.My thinking is this: Install a multi-core system and configure it to run several VMs, one each for a firewall, a caching proxy server, a mail server, a web server. Additionally, I would like to run 2-4 VMs as remote (RDP)workstations, using diskless workstations to boot the VMs over powerline ethernet.The latest powerline technology (available later this year) will allow multiple devices on a residential circuit operating at near gigabit speed, just like legacy wired networks.
In theory, the above would allow me to consolidate everything but the disklessworkstations on a single server and eliminate all wired (and wireless) connections except the broadband connection to the Internet and the cabling to the nearest power outlets. It appears technically possible, but I'm not sure about the various virtual connections among VMs. In theory, each VM should be able to communicate with the other as if it was on the same network via the server data bus, but what about setting up firewall zones? Any internal I/O bandwidth bottlenecks? Any other potential "gotchas", caveats, issues? (Other than the obvious requirement of having enough CPU and RAM).Any thoughts or observations welcome, especially if they are from real world experience in a VM environment. BTW--in case you're wondering why I'm posting here, it's because I run Debian on all my workstations/servers (running VirtualBox as a VM for Windows XP on one workstation).

Dec 27, 2010My laptop was not hibernating using default kernle and uswsusp.So I decided to try tuxonice from ubuntu ppa. Now hibernation and suspend is working beautifully on my laptop. But I have few doubts in my mind, since now I am using patched kernel from ppa will it affect the overall stability of system ? What if there is any kernel related update from ubuntu will I receive that update ? What if new ubuntu version is release, can I upgrade without breaking my whole system ?
