Software :: Vsftp Server Shows Some Files Not Others

I've installed vsftp as ftp server on CentOS5. vsftpd.conf is unedited, works without change as it was installed (it's a private network on which I'm using anonymous ftp.)For some reason vsftp will not serve some files which I downloaded from another system (using ftp.) The downloaded files simply don't show up at all if I come into vsftp via a browser, for example, and 'get' fails in a command-line ftp client. Other files originating from the local machine are served OK.
If I copy the downloaded file, vsftp shows the copy just fine but not the original; both files are in /var/ftp (the ftp server root.)The downloaded file had group and owner as '65534' so I did chgrp/chown root, but that made no difference. Reboot makes no difference; restarting the client or using a different client machine makes no difference.What am I missing or doing wrong? What doesn't vsftpd like about the downloaded files? This is happening on two separate machines, and I'm very puzzled.

I've setup a Lamp Server for Testing, The Lamp Server is Up & Running on CentOs 5.5
I am now trying to setup a VSFTP server where local users can upload files to there home directory so that Apache can serve web pages straight from the directories of system user home/accounts giving users the ability to run their own web sites which are hosted off the main server [tutorial here: [url]
So far i have been able to serve/display index.html files from the users home directory [url] but so far i cant upload files to any user home directory, every time i try to upload a file with filezilla i get this error message: 553 Could not create file. Critical file transfer error
I have searched online for similar problems like mine and so far i've tried alot of the solution but none seem to work. I'm confused, dont know where i went wrong, i put the users in a group called ftpusers and here are the permissions on the users (test, ftpuser & testftp) home directory. have a look an tell me where i went wrong :(
Also the root directory where the web pages are served from is called public_html here are the permissions
Here is my vsftp.conf file can someone check it to see if i made any errors in there:

I have a vsftp server running, and we have problems sporadically where people (not the person who uploaded the file) cannot delete files uploaded from OSX machines. We never have this problem with files uploaded by PCs. Anyone ever heard of this or know what I should check? The users uploading the files all belong to the same group. Also, I think if you log in to the FTP server with another OSX machine, it will let you delete them. I'm looking at the folders now, they have drwxrwxr-x. When i try to delete them from a PC, it gives me a 550 Remove directory operation failed.

I need to setup a way for our Web Developer to login to this particular server to manage the webpages that are hosted. He prefers to use his ftp client/fireftp since he connects to all other servers that way. I can connect via local network but can not seem to connect from my home computer. We have a firebox firewall and we opened port 21. Do we need to open any other ports or just port 21?

I just setup a vsftpd server and I am baffled about one issue. I allow local login and have not chroot anybody and disallow anonymous login. When connected as a local user I can browse the servers file system including the root (/) directory. There I can download whatever file I want but not write to it.All permissions are untouched since installing the server.Looking at the file permissions they are in general rwxr-xr-x (root root)
Isn't this a security threat? If so it seems strange as these are the default permissions. I don't dare changing the permissions for the entire file system.

I have an Ubuntu 9.10 server and i need to use an ftp server. I installed vsftp but i can't make it to work. What doesn't work is that can't login to the ftp server with my user(s).I created a user ("AddressBookUser") that should access to some files located on "/var/www/fpt/rubriche/". I set this folder as his home.Here is the row for this user in /etc/passwd:

vsftpd.chroot_list exists, but as you see above the chroot_list_file directive is disabled.When i try to connect to the FTP server the connections is established but after i insert "AddressBookUser" as user name and confirm i get a "530 permission denied" message. This occurs both from the network (LAN) computers and locally:

I can't figure out what is the problem but my thought was that it's a problem related to the user configuration rather than vsftp configuration, but it's only my supposition. If i try to login with the "main" user of my Ubuntu server, "webs" i can login correctly.

When I have different people log into our ftp and browse to the same folder, some people see the files inside, some don't. all the user accounts are in the same group, which has permission to this folder. but the one user who can see the files is the owner. how can i fix it so everyone in that group who's the owner of the folder can see the files?

I have a Kingston 8gb Datatraveler that has been giving me troubles lately. For some reason after I delete files from it it still shows up as full and the files are shown in the hidden trash files. How do I get rid of these files? I can't delete them as they just show back up. Also, I tried to format the drive with gparted and it won't unmount. When I right click and select information, at the bottom it says: Unable to find mount point. Unable to read the contents of the file system. Because of this, some operations may be unavailable.

i am currently trying to install vsFTP onto my new linux server and btw i just started using linux today this is my first time using linux so i got the ftp installed good it got downloaded and everything then i went to open a port for my server for vsFTP i used this comand to open it "-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 21 -j ACCEPT" then i closed it by pressing ESC then :wq! and it brought me back to my comand line again so now when i try to start the ip table thing with the comand "service iptables start" then when i execute that comand putty respondes with this "Applying iptables firewall rules: iptables-restore: line 1 failed [FAILED]"

I am running an Opensuse 11.2 system as a backup file server. Several external hard drives are attached via USB and mounted during boot via the fstab file. Recently, I noticed the df command showed the root partition being >65% full, while the du command showed the same drive was only about 20% full. After much investigation, I discovered that some large directories had been created under the /media folder on the root partition that were hidden when the external drives were mounted as directories with the same names under /media. I could only see this when I rebooted with a live CD and mounted the suspect partition without the external drives mounted. Is there a way to examine whether a mounted partition has existing files "hidden" when a separate file system is mounted "on top of it"?

With a default 11.4 (64bit) installation, and the one click installer for VLC at VideoLAN - VLC: Free streaming and multimedia solutions for all OS! - if you get a black screen when watching movie files there are 2 solutions.1)-> Go to Tools->Preferences->Video-> Remove the tick for "Accelerated video output (Overlay)"-> Try and play the movie again, you should now see output.2)Download proprietary drivers for your graphics card - I think theres a thread on the forum dedicated to that.
Example, NVIDIA 8600 using the default 11.4 open source drivers (nouveau?) shows a black screen when VLC uses "Accelerated video output".However, installing the proprietary NVIDIA drivers, VLC will successfully show the movie using "Accelerated video output".To clarify the default VLC installation with "Accelerated video output" ticked - works with proprietary NVIDIA drivers - and doesn't without.

I have xfce on my machine, running lucid lynx. For some weird reason, I can't change my firefox home page. I've changed it to the same one time and again in preferences, but every time I open firefox, it shows all the files in my home directory, including hidden ones. I uncheck the "show hidden files box", change it again in "preferences", but it still does this. And the home page in "preferences" is set to the right page I want; firefox just won't go there when I start it up. I really don't want my home directory in plain view like that; how do I make firefox recognize my settings?

Where is the config file for the sftp bit? At the mo it shows all the hiddenfiles (dot) and I don't want it too. Don't laugh, I have just configured my proftp for this, and realised, hang on this isn't the program that dishs out sftp!

My connection manager shows wired connections and shows wireless as being disabled. here is some terminal info getting wireless going?

I'm encountering a strange problem. I need to open and forward all UDP and TCP ports related to VoIPtelephony (5000:32000) in the Suse 11.1 server that's acting as router/firewall in our setup. The ports must redirect to a Asterisk server in the local network. My linux version is Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 5) 64-bit.
One of my file system's df -h output shows
But when I'm going to create any file or folder it shows no space available. When I put df -i it shows not much more space available.
How can I resolve it? How can I clear the unlinked or unused inode? or how can I control the inode to prevent file system full?

I work in a company and we have problems on our server so i decided to investigate.
I found first that we don't have any ftp logs. We use vsftpd and i tried unsuccessfully to configure it to write the logs.
So here i am: - vsftpd doesn't have any logs (no vsftpd.log file in /var/log/)
I added the following lines in the vsftpd.conf :
syslog_enable=YES
log_ftp_protocol=YES
xferlog_enable=YES
vsftpd_log_file=/var/log/vsftpd.log

I also took a look at vsftpd process : it is owned by a user called "nobody" and a user called "www-data" when i upload or download files.
Is it a problem of permission on the log file ?

I've been instructed to set up an sftp server this weekend. I was going to just use vsftpd b/c it's awsome, but then someone said it's supposed to use ssh. so here's my question:
Is Vsftpd the same thing as Sftp? is it the same openssh protocol for encryption and file transport? I've set up Vsftpd before and it just uses port 21, and it doesn't seem to ask all the same questions as ssh, so is it the same thing? or should/could I tunnel vsftpd through ssh?

I am new to Fedora 12 and was trying to setup a FTP server using VSFTP. I have it installed, but not sure where to go from there. I ultimately would like to have all of my PC( that are on the same subnet to be able to access the ftp server) and possible be able to access the server from outside of my local network.

Recently I started having this problem where most users on the system are unable to log into the system over SSH. Their user name and password is correct, however it shows them as invalid when they are in fact valid. I've tried changing their password but that didn't work. I also tried deleting their account, as well as their home directory, and then recreating the account, but that didn't work. Only root and perhaps one or two other select accounts are able to log in without problems. I even tried a reboot to see if that would fix it, but as I theorized, it wouldn't. I also checked and ensured their home directory was chowned to them, and that they even had a home directory. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated to help me get this issue resolved. As a dsie note, they are showing up as invalid in /vars/logs/auth.log. Running Debian 5.0 Lenny.
