CentOS: 5.4
Exim: 4.63
I want to setup Exim to only allow sending mail from the localhost and externally with Plain authentication. I know I should use TLS but not all software supports TLS, I want Exim to use its own userpass file not the local system. I have spent a few days trying to get this setup, so far I have followed this: [URL].... But unsure what to change to remove the need for TLS.

I've been trying to research this, but I don't really understand IP routing and it's bugging me that I can't fix this problem. I have a dedicated server (fedora core 7) with 3 IP addresses on the same eth0 interface. On the default IP address 62.193.226.127, there is some routing problem because I can't connect from the server to some other sites. Using one of the other IP addresses, like 62.193.252.129, I can connect fine. Additionally this address is better for sending mail because it coincides with the main domain name from which the mail is sent.My question is: how can I configure networking so that outgoing traffic from the box goes via 62.193.252.129?

I run my own mail server. There's only one part that isn't working and I can't seem to figure out why: sending mail from a client - in this case, Thunderbird.
I can send mail off-server just fine if I log in via telnet. I can receive email just fine with Thunderbird.
Here are my relevant configs:
/etc/postfix/main.cf:
Code:
queue_directory = /var/spool/postfix
message_size_limit = 102400000
mailbox_size_limit = 1024000000
command_directory = /usr/sbin
[Code].....

I have a fairly standard Exim setup for inbound and outbound mail. Recently our development team has put together a PHP app that allows us to send out bulk mails to our clients. The PHP app uses standard PEAR libraries to initiate an SMTP connection to localhost (application and mail server are on the same box). The idea here is that the application will send out roughly 10'000 emails in a very short time period (60 seconds or so) which Exim will then hold in its queue for delivery.
The problem comes in where after about 50 emails, Exim stops accepting mail and loggs the following error in the exim_main.log file: SMTP command timeout on connection from localhost [127.0.0.1] Could it be that this is because Exim immediately starts delivering the mail and then stops accepting new incoming connections? I thought that increasing the SMTP limits may be the problem here, but even after setting new values in the exim.conf file to the following, I still get the same problem:
queue_run_max = 5000
smtp_accept_max = 5000
smtp_accept_queue = 5000
This begs two questions: How do I resolve this? What is the best way for configuring Exim to accept a huge amount of mail into the queue in a very short time period, but then gradually delivery it once it's all in the queue? I've seen some people run separate Exim daemons for incoming and outgoing mail; is this a good solution?

I just set up a new router for our home office. I've enabled traffic logging, and I'd like to have the logs emailed to me. However, in order to configure email-notification, the router needs and outgoing mail server. Forgive me, but I don't really understand the terminology being used here. I've googled this a bit, but I'm not sure I now what "outgoing" vs "incoming" mean in the context. I tried using my gmail account as the outgoing mail server (smpt.gmail.com) but it requires TTLS encryption, and there's no option for that on my router.
So I figured I'd setup a simple mail server on my local network. I have a dedicated server machine, so I'd just configure a mail server there. But I got stumped at the first input box (in the yast module):"Outgoing Mail Server".That's what I wanted to use this server for. What is this "outgoing mail server"? I understand it in a normal emai context (I think) but this is confusing me. I've read through the HowTo on the openSUSE wiki, but it still doesn't answer this question.Isn't there some way to have a simple, local mail server (without MX records and the like) so I can send email from a local machine?

I have postfix installed on my computer to let scripts send email. I want to use my isp as the smtp server. In /etc/postfix/main.cf I have told postfix to use gmail as my smtp server using "relayhost = outgoing.verizon.net". However, when I send an email, it gets returned. The full email is included below (my server's address has been replaced with ***.com).
[code]...
I believe that I need to authenticate to [URL]... from postfix, but I am not sure how to add these directives to the config file.

I changed over to U-Verse which means I have a new router, gateway and IPs. Took some doing but everything is working on my server with one exception.Outgoing SMTP mail.I get CONNECTION TIMEOUT when ever something from inside my network tries to hit an SMTP server outside.Any computer within my network does a Telnet (hostname or IP) 25 and I get a time out.Port 25 is open on the router.

This is a transcript I get emailed at least once every day, usually about 3 to 10 a day recently.
Transcript of session follows.
SMTP server: errors from unknown[ip address]
<boring stuff snipped>
In: RCPT TO: <server@my domain>
Out: 550 5.1.1 <server@my domain>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table
Session aborted, reason: lost connection Now I cannot seem to find anything via Google, as when I put "server@" anywhere in the string, I just get web hosting or other kroomst. The emails usually come from legit places, usually hotels. Does this mean they are sending bad emails, i.e. they have a Trojan/worm, or is this a live hack attempt?. I believe the later, as I might get upto 3 domains from the one ip address, which is always, NOT associated with the listed domain. Not causing me any issues, except I have been getting a lot recently.

I am testing my setup which will have 2 public servers. HTTP & MAIL both with reverse DNS established.
www.mydomain.no -> xxx.xxx.xxx.034 -> internal name server
mail.mydomain.no -> xxx.xxx.xxx.035 -> internal name mail
Both addresses are on the same NIC with 34 being the main address.
The system work fine except one thing. The IP address mail sends out from is the Firewall Address _FW. I can see why as the default gateway set on the mail server is the FW_IP (The main gateway ip)How can I get the MAIL server to send through it's own public IP.I understand I can change the Firewall public IP to that of the Mail server and that would cure the problem for now. If it's possible I would like to learn a little in the process.

In order to have greater control over the emails sent out the company I imagined the following scenario.ScenarioDescribing in words what I need.ser sends an email to user@hotmail.com for example, using the smtp of my isp (is the internet).Before the email is sent, the firewall checks if the recipient is blocked transparent, if you are locked out rejects the email.I searched several forums and mailing lists, but did not find scenarios similar to mine.Where found situations in which the mail servers were internally in the company, which is not my case.

Our organization has several external IP addresses. I am behind 2 layers of NAT and the servers choose which IP address to route my traffic to. Can I specify which IP address to use when finally leaving the organizations network. I know that source routing can be done in IPv4 by adding some options in the header. But can I configure my PC to add these options automatically. I have both a Windows and a Linux Machine.

I just discovered View > "All message headers" in the Evolution email client and am quite concerned that all my out going emails contain my personal IP Address. I know that this is standard email protocol but i'm wondering if it is possible to hide or modify this header information? Or would i be better off using a webmail client?

so i set out to change the default smtp port the server uses because my ISP blocks port 25 and i need the email to work in outlook. this morning i could receive email, but not send it. so i did some research and thought that i needed to edit the master.cf file in /etc/postfix/ by commenting out this line: smtp inet n - n - - smtpd -oand replace it with587 inet n - n - - smtpd (587 being the port i want to use)somewhere along the lines postfix server stopped running and now i cannot get it to start.if i try using SSH it crashes immediately and if i restart it in simple control panel nothing happens

When I create virtual ethernet interface and do a ping -I <v_int> <host> the outgoing address is the one of the physical interface and NOT the virtual interface.Is there no chance that trafic will go out with virtual interface address??Incoming trafic is done well i.e. responds to the virtual interface have the virtual address.
My problem is that I have 2 modems and want to check both default gw behind the modems.
If I do a "normal" ping both are reachable over default route even the modem which is not the default route will not work because ping goes over the working modem.So I have 2 routing tables and want to route the virtual interface to one modem the other to the other modem

We moved over from Cpanel using Exim. I was wondering if anyone knew of way to convert the mail so when a user logs in they get to all their mail in their folders. I notice exim has a ton of folders while postfix creates files that act like folders which contain all the emails. I sent up 1 of the emails into the our mail folder that was created by Exim and it can be Subscribed to in Outlook with imap but the emails inside doesn't show up. They both appear as text files so I don't know what the difference is.
