Server :: Analyzing Filesystem For Improper Usage?
Aug 25, 2010Are there any tools out there to scan, say our fileserver(20TB), to check for things that shouldn't be there like mp3s, videos, software crackers, etc?

The "free" command shows that 7019 MB of memory are actually in use by my system, but when summing up the actual usage (or even virtual usage like the example below) it doesn't add up - the sum is far less than what is reported by "free":
Code:
[root@server1 ~]# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 12011 7946 4065 0 4 23

I have a dedicated server with fc-9. I have several domains. They are located in /home/domainname/html Under each /home/domainname I have added a webalizer.conf file. Recently I moved video files into a subdomain so I could track usage and generate reports on the use of these video files. Hence the main domain html files call the sub-domain to present flash files for viewing and .avi, .ogm, mp4, etc files for downloading.
So I have for directories:
/home/domain/html
/home/domain_files/html
I set up the domain_files as I have the main domain with access_log and error_log. I set up webalizer to analyze every day at midnight. What I get for webalizer results is links back to Sept, even though the logfile's first enter is in January. I also see many files in the report that are from a totally different domain. I have checked carefully and in webalizer.conf I have: LogFile /home/domain_files/access_log I'm lost. I haven't a clue what's wrong. If webalizer can't do this is there another simple logfile analyzer that can give me video usage?
i was wondering how to get a api for analyzing the stock market or certain stocks from google finance and writing a database with a search alogorithm in c

Me and a few other people are working together by breaking up the code into sections so each person can analyze a section of code. Now I've ran into a section of this code that I am a little confused about. It seems fairly simple but I just wanted to double check since I wasn't able to find a solid answer.
Code:
static const unsigned char usb_kbd_keycode[256] = {

About a year ago, I decided to remove the battery of my laptop when no mobility were required and the machine could use A/C, in order to --supposedly-- extend the battery's life. The system has suffered a couple of improper shutting downs within this year and, despite no important information was lost and I have not noticed a single problem, I don't know what to do after one. Yesterday, while I was testing some hard disk checking tools, I noticed that there was a damaged sector on the disk. Is it a result of these improper shutting downs? Should I force a file system check after one? Does the system performs a file system check when the error is critical? Should I check the lost+found directory after an improper shutting down --it's empty, by the way? What's the recommended way to proceed after an improper shutting down?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm hoping to find an existing Linux tool for measuring latency:
I'm trying to diagnose how much latency my OS and NIC card are adding to TCP latency in Linux. I looked at the following tools but all (at least at the surface level) measured bandwidth (Mbps/sec) rather than latency (nanoseconds for transmition of 1 packet of size x).
If I were to write a custom test, it would likely do the following:
Client:
Create a fake message of the specified length with some padding for an incrementing identifier. Open a TCP connection (with the right parameters like TCP_NODELAY, etc) Loop and send messages containing an incrementing identifier. Store the current system time (in nanos) associated with the identifier. Listen for responses, record the current time and record the latency of that identifier asynchronously Server Listen for a connection Echo back any message received
Assuming both boxes had the same setup (configs, cards, OS, CPU, etc), are relatively close to eachother in the network, and one knows roughly the network's latency contribution, one could get a rough estimate of the OS + NIC contribution and begin testing various configurations.
One could also get a more accurate picture of the latency by using a network sniffer and snooping on the lines between the two hosts, calculating the latency between the two sides for an ID, and then subtracting that from the internally measured latency.
So I have compiled from source a libgsf debian package. However when I go to install it dpkg complains that "libgsf depends on libgsf-1" however as you can see if you look on the debian page libgsf-1 is the same source as the ligsf package...
How can I resolve this redundant/recursive issue? For now I have just force installed my package (and it appears to be working) but if I am going to distribute it to other people I need to get this fixed.
I am trying to determine best method for monitoring filesystem for invalid file permissions, 777 or on NFS share but owned by root etc.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:
*/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced it then goes on to say..
*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message
*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)
Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.
Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?
I have just upgraded the hard drive in my laptop with a new one that isn't about to crash (I dropped the laptop a few months back). After installing Fedora 12, the first thing I did was try to install kmod-nvidia and all its dependencies. Upon rebooting Fedora goes to the boot splash, and then when the login screen should display it instead shows a blank black terminal like screen. Do diagnose this I logged in under terminal (tty3) and proceeded to try to start X manually. It displayed an error to the effect of 'could not load Nvidia kernel module Nvidia_module.so3'. I figured it must have been a glitch so I reinstalled kmod and the same thing happened. Tried reinstalling Fedora all together and still the same result. I am getting kmod from the RPM Fusion repo

Yesterday, i tried to boot up my laptop but the battery was uncharged and it was unable to boot ubuntu karmic 64 bit. so i tried to plug the charger as soon as possible but when i looked at the screen, there was a huge black blank screen. so i had to restart it manually by pressing the power button. Now, i can see the grub screen, i can choose one of three kernels and the Windows. But only Windows can boot but the others doesn't. And also, grub timer does not work not. It does not count down to zero and autoboot the default os. I tried to reinstall grub but everytime , i got problems. Here is what i tried to do. In another try here, i failed again. In chroot, i could not "apt-get install" as it said i wasn't connected to internet (but i was), and in another try, it could not find p/rmonct /mnt/etc/resolv.conf.
I've installed xUbuntu on a machine I will be using as a file server. Everything is fine except one thing. If the server suffers an improper shutdown such as a loss of power the next time the machine boots it gets to the GRUB2 boot menu and then waits for a keyboard input. As this machine runs headless with nothing connected other than a network cable and power lead and is tucked away under the stairs it's quite an inconvienience to go to the machine and plug in a keyboard so I can press enter. Is there some way I could force the machine to boot as normal without stopping at the menu ?

When it was started i saw the icon of NetBeans IDE 6.8, then I tried to open it, but all in vain. A screen opens for a few seconds and then it disappears. I think it is the problem of improper installation. And now I m totally unable to uninstall that bundle.

So, I thought I would plug the camera in to the laptop with it set to host the card as media when plugged in as USB, in an attempt to fix the formatting issue.
However, when I plug it in to my linux machine, it does not register as a device (e.g., /dev/sda) due to some errors, therefore I cannot reformat it. Essentially, I think I need to fix the partition table but I'm not sure how to when it doesn't register as a device. code...

I am looking to probably make a home server act as a backup for most of my data but also as a media server. I want to host all my music and videos for the most part on the server and then regardless what computer I'm using I could listen or watch. (Another question would be could I have itunes find my music on the server and play it).
But anyway, from people with home media servers, what kind of bandwidth usage do you go through a month? Comcast (ISP) limits me to 250GB and I'm thinking this is enough for moderate usage, I just want to make sure before I start the project.
I was trying to get the status of memory usage and disk usage using sigar in windows and ubuntu. done this in windows by just copying the sigar library into jdk library. But i was unable to do so in ubuntu. I've copied the library to java-6-sun library but still can't run the program.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'd been using Directadmin on my Debian 5.0 machine earlier . I had 1GB ram and a lot of memory was used up. Sometimes even the OS crashed as the programs couldn't allocate memory. I increased my RAM to 3GB but still the RAM usage sometimes just flow up to 1GB although normally DirectAdmin doesn't use more than 200MB . Restarting the server fixes the issue but then it climbs up again and comes down to a 200-400MB again by itself. Cached Memory was also being too much and sometimes even Swap Partition gets used up .Just to be sure that it's not the Bugged OS, today I installed the latest Debian 5.0.6 Net-inst on my machine . I allocated just 128MB of ram to it because it was just a testing machine. I installed it without the swap partition since I thought I will make a swap-file if it is required. I did not even update the OS rather I just installed Openssh-server and everything else was default as in Debian 5.0.6 . When server started, only 20MB ram was being used .
I just logged into my server afer about 5 hours and saw 112 MB ram being used out of which 91MB was cached. I haven't installed anything so why is this happening ?Why is this happening when I just installed the default Operating System and didn't even run an apt-get update on it.I think my previous operating system with Directadmin was also having similar issues.
I'm getting DDoS attacks on my server, and I need to block all the attacking IPs.But for that I need to know which IPs are attacking me.I was thinking that I should log the bandwidth usage per IP so I can tell which IPs are using excessive bandwidth. How can I achieve this? I'm using Ubuntu 10.10.
