Security :: Access The Server Using SSH - Getting PAM Authentication Error
Feb 10, 2011
I'm new in UNIX & trying to access the server using SSH but I encounter this error PAM Authentication Error. I use edit /etc/ssh/sshd_login & set the PermitRootLogin to yes. But didn't work. I used this command ps -ef | grep sshd & saying Process environment requires procfs(5). I don't know what to do now. What I want is access it by SSH but I got Access Denied. I've been running a Samba server under RedHat 8 for five years without a hiccup. I want to cut over to a F10 box but cannot get shares accessible. smbclient attempts fail over NT password error. SELinux is disabled. Server is visible on the network. Users require no password access to shared data.
smb.conf follows:
# Samba config file created using SWAT
# from UNKNOWN (>)
# Date: 2009/06/12 14:15:15

I have trouble with rsa authentication:
I did create an rsa certificate with ssh-keygen using my root account on a client: ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 2048 no passphrase I did copy the rsa pub_key from my client to the server scp id_rsa sampleuser@sampleserver:/home/sampleuser/.ssh/authorized_keys
I did change the ownership to the "sampleuser" of the pub key file on the server: I trayd to connect:
ssh sampleuser@sapleserver
I get that: permission denied (public key)... I know I do smth wrong but I don't know what.

I am having difficulties with Pure-FTPD. I had it working at one time. I recently had to reinstall Ubuntu 10.10 because pure-ftpd stopped working for some reason and now I have a fresh install but pure-ftpd still does not work. This is what I did to install it.
Sudo apt-get install pure-ftpd
Using the Ubuntu Spftware Center I installed PureAdmin. I then create a virtual user. Then in the terminal entered the following:
[code]...
I read somewhere that this could be a filezilla issue and to fix it I need to use active mode and use the filezilla external address [URL]... Of course I did this and the filezilla solution did not work this time. I am fairly sure it is a server issue this time.

As part of the project I'm working on, I need to set up a server with IPSec authentication only connections to a large number of low bandwidth clients. I'm making use of the PF_KEY interface to populate the keys on the server and while prototyping things I've found that the initial setup is taking longer than I had expected. At the start of my test, entries are being added to the database at a rate of around 30/second, but as time goes on this is dropping significantly. I ran a test up to around 100k entries and by then the rate had dropped to 10/second. It's key to me that if I reboot my server that the Security Associations can be repopulated in a very short period, so I do genuinely need this to be much faster.
Two questions:
1) Does anyone have any experience of running with a large number of SAs set up, and if so what sort of setup rate did you get?
2) Are there things I can do to speed up the provisioning of these SAs? I'd really like to see a rate in the thousands per second.
We've been doing the prototyping on the 2.6 kernel.

Heres what I have and what I am looking to do. I have a PC with a single core 2 Ghz Pentium processor and 1 gb of RAM. Its pretty limited in what it can do and run. It has two physical HDDs one a 250 GB SATA and the other a 160GB SATA. One the two hard drives I have the following partition structure:
160 GB HDD
28 GB Ubuntu OS Partition
2 GB Swap Partition
130 GB Free Partition (EXT4 but empty)
250 GB HDD
250 GB Free Partition (EXT4 but empty)
What I would like to do is the following:
1. Strip down Ubuntu 10.04 to where only the bare minimums run and system resources (Since they are so scarce on this system anyway) be readily available
2. Have the system run solely as a Samba File server for all other computers in the house to read and write to
3. Allow other "known" systems to access the shared folder without authentication, but any system with an unknown name, should have to authenticate first
4. Have the 130 GB from HDA and 250 GB from HDB, be presented as one network drive of 380 GB as opposed to two of 130 and 250 gb respectively
Are these things that are possible for a person of mid level understanding of Linux? How would one set about achieving all of the above goals?

I need to make a choice on what authentication protocol I want to use for Authentication and Authorization. I was looking at Radius and then literature suggested that Diameter was a better protocol. Keep in mind I need this on a hetrogeneous setup ( linux & windows together). Diameter seemed like a good fit until I discovered that the open source code no longer seems to be maintained ( C/C++).
I was also looking at Kerberos as an option though there is alot overhead with the server. SSL/TLS or EAP? I am looking for simple but secure and am new at the security protocols.

I'm fairly new to Linux and very new to Squid and am having authentication issues! I am using Oracle Enterprise Linux (which is basically Red Hat without the branding) and wanting to use Squid Proxy Server for web access with authentication to Active Directory. I've found a number of articles about this online and all of them say to use auth program squid_ldap_conf which should be in /usr/lib/squid/. I don't have a squid directory in /usr/lib for starters and my squid binaries are in /etc/squid but there is no squid_ldap_conf in there either. I have installed the latest version of Squid (3.0) to see if that helped but I still cannot find the authorisation program.

Seismicmike here. My first post. I'll try to be as clear and concise as possible. For the sake of this post, I'm going to use 1.2.3.4 as a place holder for my public IP. On my web server, I would like to be able to access the /var/ftp directory through a web browser. I have successfully done so with Google Chrome, but I cannot access the directory in Firefox or IE. Both FF and IE ask me for authentication but then time out attempting to load the directory.
I suspect that there may be something up with switching to passive mode and/or that this issue may be more with my configuration of Firefox and not with the server (seeing as how Chrome works). Another possibility may be related to SSL. When I connect with FileZilla, I have to use the FTP over Explicit SSL/TLS option in order to connect. In any case I still would like to fix it. I would also like to avoid having to install FireFTP if at all possible.
Steps to reproduce (not that you can without my actual IP =J):
* Open Chrome
* Go to ftp://1.2.3.4
* Enter username
* Enter password

I think I am having a problem due to an NFS server file size limit. Is it possible I am missing a parameter on the RHEL NFS setup to handle large files? I am running an NFS server on a RHEL 5.1 machine and the HP-UX 11.0 machine does an NFS mount to that file system. The HP-UX executes a program that resides on the HP-UX machine to process a large 35 GB data file that resides on the NFS server machine. The program on the HP-UX can only read/process the first portion of the file until an "RPC: Authentication error" is returned multiple times until the program prematurely decides that it has reached the end of file.
I tried recompiling the same program to run on the RHEL 5.1 NFS server to access the 35 GB file locally (on the NFS server instead on HP-UX) and the program completed successfully, processing the whole file (about 7 hours of processing) with no "RPC: Authentication error." In addition, I have been running the nfs mount with the same machines for quite some time, but not with such large files sizes.

At our company we have a central server with client files. This server has a SSH server installed, and through Nautilus all employees can access the files. However, I have a few questions:
1. Most employees need access to all folders, because they might use them at some point in time. However, I want to make sure they are not accessing things they do not need. How can I do this? For instance, if somebody copies all of the folders to his/her computer, I want to be able to see this in some sort of log. Can this be done? Copying and accessing in general is what is of my concern.
2. Some employees only need access to specific folders. Can this be easily configured with SFTP?
3. Some also use SSH and type commands which I want to check every now and then (e.g. to make sure an intern is not again copying information or accessing folders they should not be in). What is a good way to do this?

I am not at all convinced by the idea of giving permissions to read,write and execute as these Learning Management Systems say. Let me know what you people have to say? What is the best practise in such situations? I have to get all these LMS run on same web server.

We want to set up a Linux server (hosting Git or later SVN repositories) which should have all stored data strongly encrypted, so that if one steals the server the data cannot be read. For example, our notebooks have all important data stored on a "true-crypted" partition.
We plan to access it with SSH private keys and only after successful login should the data be readable. The server would be located in our office, shut down at night and not be connected to the Internet directly, but only accessible in our intranet.
