1. Delete SUSE partition from WinXP
2. Recover MBR with WinXP recovery tools, using specifically "fixmbr"
HOWEVER, this always leads to complications - as in GRUB errors persist on booting and fixmbr does not seem to restore original MBR!Can someone tell me what I must do to restore my MBR, minding that the standard approach I've described doesn't seem to work?
Every single time I try to watch streaming video in either Windows Media format or Quicktime format, I get an error that the proper codecs are not installed. I have installed the win32codecs at least ten times now (both from the repositories and from the codecs-kde.ymp one-click install) and still no joy. I had this running great before I upgraded from 10.2 to 11.1.
I am fairly new to Linux. I have OpenSuse Desktop 11.3. For a software package I need to install, I have to have Python 2.4 or 2.5 - it will not run with Python 2.6. I cannot find any way in Yast to install the older version of Python. So my question is this: How do I first uninstall Python 2.6 so I don't screw anything up, and then install Python 2.5? Is it as simple as using Yast for the uninstall, then finding the tarball for 2.5, unpacking it, ./configure, sudo make, sudo make install?
I am facing a problem in my already installed mysql server so i want to uninstall it so that i can again install it.Can anybody tell me the steps or process how to do that.
I have a fresh install of openSUSE 11.4 KDE 64 bit. I have desktop effects disabled for power consumption purposes on my laptop. When I shutdown or reboot the system the air theme for the the taskbar is mostly black with some grey. If I enable desktop effects, apply, and then disable the effects the correct look of the theme is shown and the appearance is retained with effects disabled. Pictures below of theme after reboot and then theme after enabling and disabling desktop effects.
My first message on this forum, I'm a new comer in the Suse world (after 10 years of debian, ouch) I really like this distro so far. Fast, clean, simple. I got an "acess denied" issue with the apache configuration though. I've installed apache through yast and configured it with yast-http. Permissions are okay and a index.htm file is in the directory.
I won't ask for a direct answer cause everything can be found on the wiki. However, I'm surprised that configuration files are not erased when the related software is uninstalled. I've spent the afternoon trying to make it work so I guess the config files are spoiled right now. I tried to erase all the config file but can't find the yast-http ones, so it does not launch the wizard like the first time. yast-http also warns about my network ruled by NetworkManager, and that it could not run properly with it, how come?
Hey, I'm just set up my first Linux machine running openSUSE 11.4 and I'm not sure where to get the drivers for a Linksys WUSB54GC USB wifi card. I've read about using ndiswrapper to use the Windows driver, is this the best route?
Each time I pass with a cursor over a widget on the desktop its side bar appears, of course it should because of resizing and moving or do some setting, but that is very boring if I do not intend to use that bar. Screenlets behave better, the setting menu appear only with proper clicking. Is there a way to manage jumping widget menu bar not to appear on every cursor passing ?
I just installed openSuse 11.2 KDE in a laptop and a desktop. On the laptop, SMPlayer worked very well with "rmvb" files. On the desktop, video its shown with no audio; using Kaffeine, both are played (sound and video) but are a bit out of sync (it happens in both, the laptop and desktop).
I just received my Slackware 13.1 & the 'Official Guide to Slackware Linux' book. I know that there is a big learning curve to use Slackware and that is why I purchased it - according to Distrowatch, "...if you learn Slackware, you learn Linux!" But, while I am 'learning Linux', I would still like to have a linux distro installed that would be more of a 'no-brainer'.
So the question is, which distro should I install first, Slackware or say, OpenSuse? I know that if I were going to dual-boot with XP, that XP should be installed first - does order matter for 2 linux distros too? Also, are there any points to remember to do during the installation processes so that I end up with a working, dual-boot computer?
What would be the preferred method to establish a remote desktop session from one 11.2 machine to another 11.2 machine in the same location? No firewalls, local connection only. I've looked at VNC, RDP with xrdp, have not been able to establish a session to desktop. I would rather not use desktop sharing if possible, don't want invitations involved. Want something similar to hitting from Windows with VNC3and taking over the established desktop session. This is in my house, no security risks involved
I would like to remove openSUSE (11.3) from my dual boot (/Windows) system. In the old days, the install CD used to have an option for that, but now my DVD doesn't have anything, or perhaps I overlooked?
I cannot uninstall Firefox, nor can I uninstall Chromium; one always stays if the other is uninstalled. For example, if I remove Firefox, Chromium will appear in its place and vice versa. This has got to be one of the weirdest bugs I've ever seen on Ubuntu! So, how can I uninstall both web browsers?
When i try to uninstall realplayer user softwre management module. It says that it cannot do so due to following reasons "Subprocess failed. Error: RPM failed: prerm called with unknown argument `0'error: %preun(realplay-11.0.2.1744-1.i386) scriptlet failed, exit status 1"
I want to revert my suse to state before last updates. I forget about rule "If there is everything ok, don't touch anything, don't apply any updates". I'm very frustrated if one day I've got something working, next day it stops work. Yesterday I installed some updates and today my desktop effects (KDE 4.4.4) stop works. So my question is - where can I check what updates were installed, and is possible to check version of packages before last update.
I am running Open Suse 11.4 and I am wanting to uninstall GNOME 3.0, can it be done and have the system go back to the orginal GNOME? If so what do I need to do...
I have 11.4 in a kiosk environment and only want VLC as my video plug-in. Since 11.4 FireFox crashes whenever it tries to using the application/x-VLC player type. I've tried disabling Totem, selecting VLC as the application/x-VLC type but nothing works. I'd just like to uninstall the Totem plugins completely but don't know how... or find a way to make VLC work in 11.4 with Firefox 4. I installed FF 4.0.1 but no change.
I want to uninstall my openSuSE 11.2 from my desktop PC. I am currently running openSuSE on one of my other laptops, openSolaris on the other laptop, and I am going to run ubuntu on my desktop PC. I want to learn how to uninstall the openSuSE 11.2 without running a liveCD from another LINUX distro to do so. So my question is "How can someone uninstall openSuSE from within openSuSE itself ?"
The other reason is that my Windows XP on that HDD has had a massive failure and I want to wipe my hardrive completely clean and start anew!
I am trying to Install Open Suse 11.3 (burned as an ISO DVD) along with existing Win 2008 R2 OS. When I try to boot from the DVD it just logs in to Win2008 though boot from CD/DVD is enabled in the boot sequence. So i tried to mount the ISO and run from Windows ! BUT I get an error before installation starts telling that Win2008 R2 is not supported in open suse installer! Is there anything I can do to overcome this and install/retain both OS? In fact I am even trying to c hange my win2008 from R2 to Enterprise to see if I can overcome the problem!
I installed some programs with wine. Then I uninstalled them all following the commands given in Wine Wiki. I don't see them in the uninstallation GUI but ı couldn't remove one thing: When I right click on an mp3 file and choose "open file with", winamp is still there. How can I remove it from the list?
For various reasons I want to completely uninstall Suse 11.3, including the stuff in GRUB, and start again, without upsetting my other distro which is also in the GRUB options. This so I can do a fresh clean inatall when I'm ready.I know I could just reformat the relevant partitions, but I guess that doesn't deal with the GRUB issue?
I am trying to streamline a desktop install into a more streamlined server-esk install. I have edited the inittab to change the runlevel at startup to 3. How do I now remove KDE completely? Also are there any other large programs I need to uninstall?
i installed opensuse on my acer laptop wich has win xp home sp3. but as i only have a 70gb HD i installed Opensuse on my external WD HDD 1TB i have a 30 GB partition on it so i put it there.but my problem came when i started my comp without my HDD plugged in and i couldnt load windows. so i was going to uninstall it and create a partition on my laptops HD to put Opensuse on. so after trying to get it removed and getting some info from other forums i repaired the windows MBR which allowed me to boot up windows.
but now after trying to format the partition opensuse was on, my comp can no longer see it. i can not format it with the WD formatting software or through windows computer managment. i have tried partition manager but it cannot read my whole HDD infact it doesnt see any of it, and i tried using the install disc at start up but it is unable to even install on that partition as it cannot use that partition.i also tried with the win xp disc at start up but it also cant access the HDDi am also a noob at linux systems and only installed as i wanted to see what it was like and learn about the system.
I am selling my laptop soon, so I decided to try and factory reset it. I couldn't, even though I had been able to before, because Windows couldn't reboot because openSUSE was my GRUB menu (I booted it from CD). How do I uninstall openSUSE and get it back just to loading Windows 7 at start up? I'm a total newbie at this so please explain so I can understand.
