SUSE / Novell :: Saving The Screen Resolution?
Aug 4, 2010
I am running OpenSuse 11.3 in a MAC Parallels VM environment. It installed more smoothly than on actual hardware, but the screen resolution is 1024x672 so the screen is off. I have to blindly click in the corner to get the menus, so i changed it to 1024x640 now it looks great, but it doesn't stay. Every time i restart the VM, i have to set the resolution again. Is that a big or is there something I am missing?

I have been searching for 2 days and cannot find an answer. Apparently Sax2 isn't available in 11.3. It looks as if many are having the same difficulty. I've tried xrandr and tried to edit /etc/X11/Xorg.conf with no success.Copying a working xorg conf file might be a fix, I don't know.

I have installed 11.2. When it starts to boot it runs through its startup and then all I get is a blank screen. I noticed in startup just before it says starting HAL it says CPU frequency not supported. I am assuming that this is the issue. I have run 11 and 11.1 on this box and have not had a problem with this. I have a P4 3.00 GHz with 2 GB of RAM.

I have recently got a new computer, and I have been trying to install openSUSE 10.3 on it. But, the screen will go blank and become unresponsive if I boot with the default options. When I switch to text mode, it boot and stops when it outputs time: pit clocksource has been installed. Switching to safe settings will make no difference. Right now, I am using openSUSE 11.1, but I'm not very happy with it, so I intend to replace it with 10.3. I'm not sure what the pit clocksource is, and can it be disabled, or some workaround?
my specs are:
AMD Athlon 64
PCIe NVIDIA 7100 GS
NVIDIA MCP61P northbridge chipset

I've been trying to install OpenSuse 11.0 on my ten-year-old Gateway desktop. It has been showing this screen for approximately thirty minutes. In case you can't read it, it says 'Decompressing Linux... done. Booting the Kernel.' I booted from the CD, and the OpenSuse screen came up, and I selected 'Installation' from the menu. And here we are.

I just tried installing OpenSUSE 11.1 onto my Playstation 3. I installed the otheros.bld fine (which I downloaded via a link provided on the OpenSUSE website). I then inserted my 32-bit Gnome CD for installation and restarted my system. Then on startup, a blue/grey screen appears. Here are the links to the screenshot (sorry for poor quality):
[Full Screen]

[Top Half]
[url]
[Bottom Half]
[url]
As you can see, the only option is for me to select the gameboot, which obviously takes me back to the Playstation XMB. There are keys at the bottom of the screen, but this is only to change the resolution. So I have no option to install the OS.
Does anybody know why this screen appears and have any ideas on how I can get around this problem to install SUSE onto my Playstation?

I just installed Suse 11.3 64bit on a new build. My video card is a nvidia gt240. I am using the default drivers. My monitor is a NEC 17" LCD.
When I boot up the screen resolution defaults to 1280x1024. I can go to applications>configure desktop>display and set it to 1024x768, which is my resolution of choice, and it works until I reboot or log out and log back in, then it resets to 1280x1024.
I would like to make 1024x768 the default so I don't have to keep changing it. Is there a way to do this? The output of xrandr looks like this:
$~> xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192
DVI-I-1 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 338mm x 270mm
1280x1024 60.0 +
1152x864 75.0
1024x768 75.1 70.1* 60.0
[Code]...
Is there something I can change to set a new default resolution?

I've got several language multimedia CD-Rom's, made for Windows 95/98/98 SE and 2000, that I'm using by means of my daughter's old PC (Win 98 SE O.S.). However I noticed, also, that you can perfectly use them even with Windows Vista. What I'd like to know is if you can use them even with Suse/Novell and (why not?) OpenSuse Linux.

how to install a D-Link Access Point on Suse 11.0 or steer me toward documentation that will do that? I configured the device on XP following instruction from this forum and the AP configured perfectly. The AP is plugged directly into the network port on the computer. It *should* function correctly without a router. I tried a restart and Suse has no idea it's there. The computer is currently configured for a wired connection which needs to be changed. The computer itself is going to be used as a small home storage server.

I did have that problem in previous versions of SUSE, but somehow, I solved that. I cant remember what I did then.

I've pre-partitioned my HDD and want to install 11.2 on the second primary partition. However, when using the installer, I can't get Suse to install on the prepared 20gb partition - it keeps insisting it wants to install on the large unallocated section of the drive.
I find the partitioner somewhat hard to use and the answer may be staring me in the face but I can't see it.

New Suse 11.3 installation with Gnome desktop. Added K3B using Yast2, and after completing the install of K3B, there is no icon for K3B! Instead there is an "X" and the text for K3B in it.From the main menu -> more applications -> multimedia, is where the K3B icon is.Yast2 is supposed to install any dependencies needed or warn if it can not find any missing dependencies. What is missing, or is it a permission problem? All the other application icons seem fine.

to get flash 10 working. I just decided to update to 11.3. Bought a 8.0GB USB stick to copy files to. USB DISK icon on visible on Desktop. mounted on /media/USB DISK Clicking on device properties it is read only. I can change permissions but that is only temporary. Looking under my computer it is formated as vfat device name is /dev/sdb
I can't copy any files to it. Can't see in terminal even being root as well. Almost started the Partitioner in Yast but didn't want to accidently crash the system. That WOULD be my luck Can't find a way to format it via GUI interface. Can I use something like fdisk in terminal. I guess I need to format it as ext3.

I am trying to connect to my network. I am dual-booting with windows 7 ultimate and that connects just fine. When I plug in my ethernet cable to the LAN adapter of the motherboard nothing happens. In the network manager it doesn't even acknowledge something has been connected (ie no eth0 or anything). I'm guessing that I don'tave a driver for it installed under linux. The adapter is the Marvell Yukon 8059 (88E8059 I think)

I'm stuck in the "log off" mode. I don't get the shut down menu. It started when I turned the computer on today. I got a verbose boot up and had to login and enter password and run "startx". Then I got a gray screen before the splash screen.
I had been trying to get alsa to start in the "runlevel" section yesterday, could I have messed something up in there causing this?

If hypothetically I deleted my gpg keys and am not getting updates is there anything I can do to get updates? Almost all software installed is from the repositories where openSuse employees works (official repositories). I have a few packages from openbuild but not too many.
I am trying to read up on security now and see how the keys work so I don't run into this again. It happened during my paranoid attack when I realized I installed packages from the non official repositories and became nervous about having done so.
There are so many virus and malicious software threats now it is making me nervous (especially for XP) and I feel the need to do a little more reading.
