Server :: Major Differences Between SuSE 10.2 And 11.3?

Jan 11, 2011

What are the major differences between SuSE linux 10.2 and 11.3? We are using 10.2 in our ASP environment and we want to upgrade and regression test 11.3, I was wondering if any linux experts our there can give me a rundown on the differences between the two versions. I know it is quite a leap but we are behind schedule on this one and need to catch up?

Red Hat :: Ext3 Vs Vxfs Major Filesystem Size Differences

Mar 29, 2010

We have 3 RH5u4-64 servers. Server 1 is a standalone server. Servers 2 & 3 are clustered filesystem servers running Veritas CFS 5.0mp3.

Server 1's filesystem is EXT3 and was cloned from a Sun server running Veritas 5.0mp3-VXFS. Filesystem size returned from 'du' 'df' show about 428GB on both the Linux Standalone Server(EXT3) & the Sun Solaris Servers (vxfs).

We then cloned Server 1's filesystem (EXT3) to the 2-node CFS servers. Cloning was successful, but the filesystem sizes returned by 'du' 'df' show 128GB. Block Size for the EXT3 filesystem is 4k while blocksize for the VXFS filesystem is 1k.

Where did that other 300GB go?

I can see VXFS/CFS being slightly more efficient than EXT3 because it's been around much longer, but that can't possibly account for the vast difference.

SUSE :: Get File Descriptor From Major And Minor Number?

Nov 15, 2010

Is it possible to get a file descriptor from the major and minor number. If so, how can this be done? I am trying to see if a port(eg ttyS2) is opened without using the fdopen or open or fopen functions. is there a way to get the file descriptor of file or port that as already been opened, without using the functions I mentioned above. These functions reopens the port. I am trying to avoid that.

SUSE :: Main Differences Between Opensuse And Ubuntu?

Feb 4, 2010

I'm thinking of trying out opensuse for a while. However, I'm used to Ubuntu so I'd like to know what the major differences are between the two distros. Hopefully, that will allow me to make a better comparison. I'm not talking about differences like "this is more 'polished' than that" or " this looks cooler than that".. I want to if there are differences in the file system... the software..

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Major Tearing In 10.10 With ATI

Nov 19, 2010

I've always had kind of an issue with tearing in Ubuntu but today I got round to updating to 10.10 64 bit, and decided to try and do something about the tearing. I followed this [URL] to the word except on the line "sudo aticonfig -initial" where I had to use "sudo aticonfig --initial" for the xorg.conf to regenerate. It worked great to start with but after a reboot the tearing got terrible. The tearing I used to experience was multiple tearing lines at random heights that appeared momentarily and could only really be noticed in fast moving scenes of films or games.

Now I get just one tear line which starts at the bottom of my monitor and slowly moves up to the top of the monitor over a period of about 10-15 seconds. Once it gets to the top it re-appears at the bottom and starts again, and the refresh difference on either side of the tear is at about 0.5 seconds it makes videos pretty much unwatchable. My graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 8500, and the AA on it supports up to x8 sampling where as the tutorial only says to go up to x4 (I am unsure if this is because x4 is the max for most cards or because for some reason mid settings are better) but both seem to get the same result. Also I'm using the proprietary ATI drivers and Catalyst Control.

Just tried to upgrade my mythbuntu box from lucid to maverick.

It crashed during the upgrade. On re-boot it now stops at a dialog telling me its running in low graphics mode because it cannot load/find the nvidia drivers. I am unable to close the dialog. No mouse, no keyboard.

ESC will not let me interrupt the boot to get to a recovery console.

Ubuntu Installation :: Major UI Bugs With 11.04 Upgrade

May 2, 2011

I had 10.10 set up with very flashy compiz settings and a custom theme. When I upgraded and first opened 11.04 I tried to set up my compiz how it had been before starting with a desktop cube. As I was doing this, everything gradually just fell to pieces and now I have no left side bar, no top bar, and none of my windows have toolbars or window borders. I tried restarting and it didn't change. I don't even have any way to bring up the system settings window, or to bring up terminal without restarting to command line mode.

May 9, 2010

As the topic says, why is GNOME the desktop environment of choice by major Linux vendors and distributions? RedHat, Canonical Ubuntu and Novell SLED all use GNOME as the default DE. Even Sun when they released JDS back in 2004 decided to use GNOME as the default DE despite the fact it is based on SUSE which used KDE as the default DE.

Software :: Major Re-edit Of MythTV Wiki Going On?

Sep 14, 2010

I was looking at the MythTV wiki to look at possible developments related to some troublesome hardware of mine, and I noticed that all the tuner card pages are being removed...

The message reads "clearing out local tuner pages" ...

There are significant pieces of information that are being removed... Some of which are not present on the wikis for related projects (like IVTV).

Does anyone know; Is this an official edit?!

Also the MythTV.org home page is looking pretty.

Is there something going on within the MythTV developer community?

Debian Multimedia :: Not Much Stable If A Major DE Can't Change Themes?

Mar 11, 2010

lxappearance won't let me change themes on Squeeze. It just doesn't do anything, neither preview, nor theme setting. Turns out this is a known bug, and allegedly fixed. Ppl are told to "upgrade" their package. However, in Squeeze it's still the old package, and it doesn't work. So I filed another new bug report, which they closed and told me to upgrade the package.

Upgrade? From Sid? What happened to fixing Testing so it can become the next stable? Not much stable if a major DE can't change themes. Not that it's a real problem, but it's
annoying. I purged lxappearance and manually installed its Sid counterpart, only to find out
the bug is still there.

Ubuntu :: Major System Crash - XP Became Unresponsive - How To Repair The Damage

Mar 9, 2011

My computer started acting flaky this afternoon and by the end of the day, became completely inoperable. When I reboot and login, I'm given only a Terminal window. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, although the Lynx is not very Lucid at the moment!

1). First sign of trouble was yesterday when I was running Win XP as the guest on Virtualbox. XP became unresponsive - at least the mouse could not push any buttons. I had to do a cold shutdown by right-clicking the "close" button at the tab on the bottom Gnome panel. This problem repeated itself today.

2). I attempted (and I thought, succeeded) in upgrading OpenOffice.org to version 3.3. OO seemed to work fine, but after this install I started seeing problems.

3). I attempted to remove Pulse Audio via Synaptic, but instead of removing only Pulse, pieces of software started flying out of the machine (so to speak) at an alarming rate. It happened too fast to count them all. I think the entire desktop is gone along with many individual programs (such as Kaffeine, being one that I noticed).

Currently, I'm running a backup copy of Ubuntu that I keep on a separate hard drive on the same machine. I can access my files from here, and yes, I've backed up my home folder from the other disk!

When I reboot to the damaged system and I get the terminal window, how should I repair the damage? How do I find out if the damage resulted from broken or missing software, or both? Should I try to load Synaptic from the terminal, and if so, how is that done?

Ubuntu :: Major CIFS Errors When Accessing Shares Etc In 10.04 - No Response For Cmd 50 Mid 34703

May 1, 2010

Since upgrading to 10.04 I have had constant CIFS errors in /var/log/syslog

Eg -
May 1 10:33:46 eclair kernel: [ 933.789217] CIFS VFS: No response for cmd 50 mid 32895
May 1 10:33:46 eclair kernel: [ 933.794567] CIFS VFS: No response for cmd 50 mid 32900
May 1 10:33:48 eclair kernel: [ 935.721371] CIFS VFS: No response to cmd 46 mid 37294

[code]....

All shares mount and I can open them etc, but always those errors appear whenever I try and browse to it, read them etc. These shares are mount from a Windows 2003 Server and no other machine has a problem reading or writing to this machine. I have changed the network cable and network cards in both machines, with no success. If I copy a file from a local drive to a CIFS drive, the file on the CIFS drive becomes corrupted.
