SUSE / Novell :: Install A D-Link Access Point On Suse 11.0?

Sep 16, 2010

how to install a D-Link Access Point on Suse 11.0 or steer me toward documentation that will do that? I configured the device on XP following instruction from this forum and the AP configured perfectly. The AP is plugged directly into the network port on the computer. It *should* function correctly without a router. I tried a restart and Suse has no idea it's there. The computer is currently configured for a wired connection which needs to be changed. The computer itself is going to be used as a small home storage server.

SUSE / Novell :: Can't Get Suse To Install On The Prepared 20gb Partition?

Aug 23, 2010

I've pre-partitioned my HDD and want to install 11.2 on the second primary partition. However, when using the installer, I can't get Suse to install on the prepared 20gb partition - it keeps insisting it wants to install on the large unallocated section of the drive.

I find the partitioner somewhat hard to use and the answer may be staring me in the face but I can't see it.

SUSE :: Make A Shortcut For Any Given Program?

Jun 24, 2010

After installing a few packages without a package manager (yast), I was wonding if there is anyway to make a shortcut (or application link or whatever its call) for any given program you install to show up automatically on all users desktops and start menus(for lack of a linux term). For example I installed firefox to a folder in the /opt directory and found that i could drag and drop the shell command to the desktop to make a shortcut, or i could create a new application link on my desktop and point it at firefox. But what If i wanted that to show up for all users somewhere by default? Is there anything like the "all users" desktion winXP or the "public user" in win7?

SUSE :: Schedule Hibernate And Program Start?

Oct 17, 2010

I'm trying to make an old Dell Latitude D505 running OpenSuse 11.3 LXDE download torrents at night between 2 and 6 AM (when I have free bandwidth), but I'm failing at a couple very basic things. The solution is probably very simple, but I can't find it.First: How can I schedule Transmission to start every day at 2AM? I tried with Crontab (using VCron), but I think I'm using the wrong command. When I type "transmission" in a terminal it launches transmission, but when I make a crontab entry with "transmission", nothing happens. Do I need to type the full path to the transmission executable? If so, how can I find that? Or is the problem more likely to have something to do with permissions?Second: Is it possible to schedule hibernation? If so, what command should I use?

SUSE :: Unable To Get A Program To Run From The Command Line?

Nov 9, 2010

I have reinstalled Suse 10.1 as dual-boot with Windows XP. I am now unable to get a program to run from the Linux command line. I am familiar with the program and have had it running previously when the machine was Linux-only. Everything else, e.g.Firefox and Office, work fine in Suse.

The problem occurs with all commands - not just this one. isis3Startup.sh is in green on the screen so I assume I should be able to run it - I have never had any problem when it was installed previously.

SUSE :: Starting A Program With Multiple Versions Installed

Feb 11, 2011

I have matlab installed on a network (I am not the administrator) and we usually start the program by typing "matlab", then choosing one of the version options from the menu i.e. typing "n". So because of this, trying to run matlab programs or commands directly like this... matlab -r ProgramName

...does not work. I just get the menu as usual and everything else is ignored. I assume the admin has overridden the matlab command with their own custom script. So my question is can I start a specific version of the program by specifying the folder that the version is in? I thought it might be something like /opt/matlab/version -r programname

this might look foolish, but I am a bit of a linux noob. Let me know if I should just ask my administrator but I thought there might be something easy I am missing.

SUSE :: Can't Get The SuSE Install Right?

May 19, 2010

I'm having reeeal trouble doing this My hard drive has 2 partitions - One NTFS (W7) and the other unallocated for the Linux install. I boot using the SuSE install DVD and install to the empty partition, finish the install, reboot and it boots to SuSE (which looks very nice, I must add), but it's corrupted the W7 MBR. I get all my stuff back in W7 but I'm a little stumped as to why I can't get the SuSE install right.

It's something small but I don't know what it is. I have a tiny bit of experience in Linux but not much.

Also, I'd like to load W7 as default with the option of loading SuSE, which I beleive this needs some editing of the GRUB boot loader, but I don't know how to do this.

OpenSUSE Install :: Suse Install Formatted User Data

Sep 11, 2010

I have installed Suse on my Windows Vista 64bit machine a couple of times, but the last time I did it - after a disk change - presented some unanticipated problems. Prior to install, Windows Disk Management (whose output I was unable to paste into this question) showed that my disks were laid out as follows:

[Code].....

Disk 0 is a Seagate ATA drive, while Disk 1 is a Western Digital Ext HDD Usb Device. Looking back, I think I should have carved out a partition after M before installing Suse, but I was uncertain whether to make it a logical one or a primary, and in the past the installation has taken the 25 or so gig it needed from the last defined partition on disk 0. This time, however, it went after disk 1, and reformatted the entire drive, deleting about 300 gig of user data, including my system backup. What really suprised me is that it took up the entire drive: 2 gig for the swapfile, then a 20 gig partition, and all the rest for the third partition.

This is not what I would have expected. I especially would not have expected the installation to re-format user data. In any case, I did not want Suse on disk 1, so I reformatted the drive and then used my Partition Manager to rebuild the boot Mbr. So now, I am able to boot into windows, do not have Suse on my machine, but have lost critical data. My disks are now back to the way they were when I started (see above), except that drive F is now all free space, except for my latest backup. My question is how do I ensure, when I reinstall Suse, that it will choose disk0 for the installation and will not overlay any of the data that I have on that drive.

OpenSUSE Install :: Cannot Install Suse - Does Not Recognize My CD/DVD Device

Jul 13, 2010

I built a new pc and want to have Suse again. Unfortunately Suse installation does not recognize my CD/DVD device. So I boot from DVD select installation and a few moments later there's a popup 'make sure cd number 1 is in your drive'. I also did try to load other kernel modules but nothing helps. The only drive which is always recognized is floppy drive.

Here are some details about my system: Asrock P55M Pro board, Intel P55 chipset, 2 SATA HDD's, IDE NEC 2510 DVD writer, BIOS is set to AHCI due to Windows.

I tried following:
Use Suse DVD 11.0, 11.2, x86 or x64
Set BIOS to AHCI, IDE (compatible), IDE (enhanced)
DVD writer NEC was used in my former pc and did install 11.0 without probs.

Installing from HDD is new to 11.2 thus I copied the DVD to a directory. During Installation I can select the correct partition but suse is not able to find repositories.(?)

When I then select "install" the kernel loads, but then it goes wrong. Whatever I do I get "No repository found". It's almost as though, having loaded the kernel from the DVD, the installer can no longer see the disk.
