Have a cheaponasto card which refuses to play ball with the kernel. I have tried several card types with no luck.
I is just a video capture with no TV tuner. v4l-conf complains there is no framebuffer address and therefore (I think) xawtv will not start.

I would like to install the devel package for this kernel version, but I can't find it, because in the fedora repo there is only the original kernel (2.6.29.4....) and in the updates repo there is only the newest kernel package (2.6.30....)
Where can I find the packages which are between the fedora and update repos' versions?

I would have thought that removing a given kernel package would trigger the removal of the older kernel headers. Can someone confirm that is, or is not, the behavior? I ask this because it seemed to me that the older kernel header packages were indeed removed when I removed some older kernel packages.

I would expect apt-get to automatically also remove linux-headers-2.6.25-2-amd64 and linux-headers-2.6.25-2-common. Is that what will happen, or do I need to explicitly state all three packages on the apt-get remove command?
I installed ubuntu on my laptop recently and would like to have trim support. (Because I have a ssd drive (crucial c-300 256gb). The current kernel that I am using is the 2.6.32 (standard lucid kernel I believe). Unfortunately TRIM support is only available from 2.6.33 and up. having had problems with getting grub2 to work on dual HDD setup...despite the most excellent advice on the forum i took the plunge and installed 10.10 from update manager within 10.04..... bingo fixed grub and now have dual boot again. but the update manager and synaptic package don't work because of libedata-cal1.2-6 file that remains..following other advice on the forum Advice gratefully received, how can i force an unistall of this package

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using Ubuntu 10.04 (actually Linux Mint 9 but I can't remember my password to their forum...) and have had a couple of crashes with my installation of Thunderbird which from the repositories is one behind the current version. I've downloaded the tar.gz files from Mozilla and though I don't really want to get in the habit of it I'd like to do the hopefully simple compiling to get this running. Can someone give me some pointers? I've unzipped the download and there isn't anything in there that runs as far as I can see.

I am using DEBIAN 6.0 and I wannna update my kernel from 2.6.32 to 2.6.38. Every time, I do it but after the installation & rebooting into the new kernel it gives me error "UNABLE TO BOOT INTO THE KERNEL".
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have the following strange thing with a RHEL4 installation. Since last week, the system did a reboot and now something is really fucked up. During boot we get the following messages (don't care about 'strange' typo's, my colleague typed it 'blind' from the screen)

The strange thing is that we never see a 'could not mount blabla' or similar messages. First we thought it was a failing kernel update by plesk, but even after manually updating the kernel with RHN RPM's, still the same message. Booting with rescue mode and then chroot the system works. After that we even can start things like plesk and so on.
We double checked things with another RHEL4 install, and at least two things were odd:
1: the working machine has /dev/dm-0 and /dev/dm-1, the broken one doesn't
2: some files on /dev didn't have group root, but 252
We tried to recreate the /dev/dm-X nodes with [vgmknodes -v], output:

A fdisk /dev/sda shows: /dev/sda2 XX XXX XXXXX Linux LVM (I removed the numbers because this line is from another machine, but rest was identical)
We have a copy of the boot partition so if one need more info please let me know.

I'm not one of those people who needs to have the latest and greatest kernel to be happy, I just rely on the update manager. I swore that I saw an update for a new kernel, but my kernel version hasn't changed. I'm trying to install bitcoin onto my computer, and the Linux version only comes in tar.gz, and I can extract it just fine, however when I put in ./configure using the command line...it doesn't work...so I checked the README file and it didn't mention doing that...it simply told me to run either /bin/64/bitcoin or to run /bin/32/bitcoin However when I try running first one, /bin/64/bitcoin, it simply says something about there not being a shared library...But when I try to run /bin/32/bitcoin it simply says "Permission Denied" and yes I tried running as root when I first saw that...didn't do any good.

9.04 this morning updated my kernel to I believe it is 2.6.28.18 and upon the reboot I had no desktop. It booted wanting to go into low graphics.
So I drop to shell and stop the gdm and try to run the latest nvidia run file I have and it hangs saying I have a x server running.
Otherwise I am needing assistance with getting my desktop back! I can boot into an older kernel and if need be I would like to roll back that latest update this morning, but once again I am forgetting the command line for that.
Can you please tell me how can I tar ball/compress a directory hierarchy with soft links in Linux?
View 2 Replies View Relatedcertain there is command line magic that will enable me touse find to identify a set of files use tar to create an archive of all matching files I get find to create a list of files that I really want, but I'm dashed if I can discover how to tell tar to roll-up all of those files.
If I use find's -exec option, it runs tar for each filename. Telling tar that input is $(find ...) results in a command line that is correct but too long. I think that I want to tell tar to read the list of files from STDIN, but I cannot discover how to do that if it is possible. I thought that the option "--" double-dash but having that right-most on the tar command did not work.
Ran the updater, went to boot to Win7 to use Photoshop and realized that the grub menu was gone. Ubuntu boots by default now. I tried running "sudo update-grub" at a virtual terminal and while it listed the various linux kernels ok, it then got caught in a loop spitting out some crazy looking errors. I rebooted and Ubuntu came up fine. I tried running "sudo update-grub" again from the gnome terminal and it hangs the whole computer for a few minutes and finally gives me this:

I'm evaluating OpenSUSE and have installed 11.3 with Gnome (from the latest liveCD) and have it all running fine in a VM at the moment. We are looking at using it for an iSCSI/NFS/Samba server and have it allrunning and it is all configurable from Yast. However I can't seem to get Nautilus to play ball and allow sharing of Samba/NFS shares under folder properties (I'm fairly positive I've done this fine in Ubuntu). All I ever get is Usershare/Gnome sharing (which I believe is Webdav).
I must say I am so impressed with OpenSUSE, the partition manager is just a dream to use and everything works really well it would just be really nice to be able to share NFS/Samaba shares from the file manager. There doesn't seem to be any other file managers in the repositories so I'm a bit stuck now.
I received an update to my kernel through the update manager (updated from ****.32.14 to ****.32.19, or something like that) but grub still shows the old kernel and not the updated one. Was this not a full kernel update and only a patch or do I have to do something to use the new kernel? I'm new bear with me if this doesn't make any sense.

When I open the Automatic Bug Report Tool, I get that The Linux kernel crashed and Crash Rate says 78 times!
So it's crashing all the time but otherwise the system is running good so far..
How can i debug this? Any log I could check?

I've been compiling customized kernel packages for ubuntu and I've noticed that the final debian package output from running the command:
# fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-custom kernel_image kernel_headers
returns a couple of packages with a very long package name which looks similar to this:
linux-headers-2.6.32.1-custom_2.6.32.1-custom-10.00.Custom_i386.deb
linux-image-2.6.32.1-custom_2.6.32.1-custom-10.00.Custom_i386.deb
Is there a way or a workaround to reduce the filename length to a shorter format?
