A few days back, I was moving a file from my home directory to a 1TB WD external hard drive (NTFS). In the middle of the process, the power went out so moving was interrupted. Now, the file I was trying to move is there on the external hard drive, but it can not be read, moved, renamed or removed. Besides, the destination folder on the external hard drive and all other files in it can be read, but they can't be removed or renamed.

It's been a long time since I last tried Linux, but Slack works (a lot easier than Slack 8 did back when I last used it!) quite well. I'm using the XFCE desktop and it's smooth as silk except for one odd problem-I cannot get any of my USB drives to mount. I just plugged in my Lexar 4GB USB flash drive and received an error message. View 2 Replies View RelatedIt started when I wanted to dual boot Windows 7 and Opensuse off of my netbook (No DVD/CD drive) I tried install suse from an external hard drive and I botched it. I ended up erasing EVERYTHING off of my internal netbook hard drive. Windows and all.
Well, I had a couple of other computers so I studied up and eventually successfully installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on my external hard drive (11.3 being the one that I accidentally erased everything with, so kinda scared of it) and now I want to install openSUSE 11.2 on my internal netbook hard drive.
I can not use disks
I can not use a flash drive (For some reason, even if I make it bootable, it will not load up, this could be because it's actually a 8GB microSD card that is placed in a USB card reader.)
I can not use an external hard drive because that's what I'm running suse off of.
I've tried reading up on how to install suse on another drive off of the hard drive and I've gotten as far as whenever I boot up the netbook with the suse external hard drive connected it will ask to boot into OpenSUSE, the Fail Safe, or to install OpenSuse. When I select to install it it gives me the Error 18 Unknown File system.
I've tried formatting the internal hard drive twice. One as NTFS and again as EXT4. Neither seems to effect it other than when it's ext4 I can open it and it contains a Lost and Found folder.
When I interrupt the boot sequence by pressing c and going to the terminal and I use the root (hd +TAB command it tells me I have a hd0 and a hd1. The hd1 only has 1 partition which is ext4, which I'm assuming hd1 is the internal hard drive (I'm not sure how to check) and the hd0 is the external hard drive, which has three partitions. One with an unknown file system and two with ext4. When I try to enter the set up from the terminal it gives me the same error for any thing I put it (e.g. root (hd0,0) gives the same error as root (hd0,1), or root (hd0,2) and root (hd1,0)
Something like it cannot locate these two files I'm assuming it needs to boot. If anyone finds this relevant I'll retry it and post the files its missing.

The external hard drive which contains all my photos and where I backed-up all my important documents is no longer recognized. It is a three month old 500GB Iomage Prestige Desktop Hard Drive.When I plug it in, it is recognised as a USB device, because it shows up when I type lsusb, but dmesg gives this error message.

I popped the disk out of the casing put it on a SATA connect internally and then tried the file recovery programs testdisk/photorec and SpinRite, but both failed because they couldn't recognize the external hard disk.
I have a laptop with only 30GB storage and I want to install Lubuntu in virtual box but Lubuntu needs 5GB of storage space which i dont have. Could i use an external 160GB hard drive to act as the hard drive for the virtual machine without affecting the files that are already on the external hard drive
View 6 Replies View Relatedi borrowed an external hard drive from my friend to back up a load of stuff on my windows partition before reinstalling it. I am doing this through ubuntu. I am trying to zip up folders like My Documents etc and chuck them on the external hard drive but it always comes up with errors to do with read/write permissions. In the permissions tab on the folder properties of the ext hard drive it says I am owner but i have no file access (only folder access is create and delete files). When i try to give myself read/write permission it just goes straight back to nothing when i look at it again.

However the commands have faded from memory and i am now unable to find that site again. Could anyone offer insight on how to fix this "grub error 21" or how to activate it. I run primarily debian but i have a windows partition on one of my relative's computers.

Since the only thing stored on my external was fedora i really didn't have to do much to it. just go into bios and boot from usb. Now that im using fedora more, Id like to add Vista to my choices. I have Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 installed on my machine. I am unable to mount an External Hard (NTFS). I have tried several options which are as under:
Option 1:After making a dir /media/windows mount /dev/sda1 /media/windows/ -t ntfs -o nls=utf8,umask=0222
Option 2: mount -t ntfs /dev/sdb1 /media/windows
So I recently got a WD MyPassport external hdd with 500gb capacity. I formatted it to NTFS so that it would be more efficient transferring data between my Ubuntu and Win7 dual boot. I am having problems mounting an iso on my external hard drive. I do not want to move it onto my linux partition because it is 3.6 GB. I have a directory made (/media/iso) that I would like to mount it in, but if that doesn't work then I don't care where it goes. After I mount it I want to be able to run it using Wine, but that will come later. For now I just need to get it mounted. And, of course, I am fairly new to linux/ubuntu.

I tried booting the Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD (amd64) and using gparted to delete the partitions that where on the hard drive leaving only unallocated space, then creating one new partition that was ext4. I clicked apply and after a short time it said all operations completed successfully.
Now the problem is it won't let me transfer any documents onto the hard drive, or even create a folder or file. If I go into the properties of the hard drive, under the permissions tab it says I am not the owner...?
