View 1 RepliesI am very new to Linux and trying to learn the shell scripting. Just to know is there any client in linux which does the same task as FTPS on windows. FTPS on windows can read series of FTP command from a txt file and execute them. Is there any way to do that same task, i mean reading series of ftp commands from a txt file, on linux suing shell or perl (any module)?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just downloaded the Fedora11 LiveCD and booted it......it boots, but when it starts to load KDE, it takes a very long time, and it never ends. It just keeps on reading from the CD-ROM drive. I can see the GUI is loading, but the loading time is so long that the mouse sometimes freezes. My Config is 512MB of RAM and 2 IDE Hard Disks. Also note that I verified the image with SHA256, and even burnt the CD at two different speeds, one at 48X and the other at 16X. Still nothing. There has also been severe kernel panics on EXT4.

perfVar.zsh :
#!/bin/zsh -f
MYVAR=`cat $1`
for i in {1..10}
[code]...
Performance test result:
> time ./perfVar.zsh BigTextFile > /dev/null
./perfVar.zsh FE > /dev/null 6.86s user 0.32s system 100% cpu 7.177 total
> time ./perfCat.zsh BigTextFile > /dev/null
./perfCat.zsh FE > /dev/null 0.01s user 0.10s system 91% cpu 0.118 total
I would have thought that accessing a VARIABLE was way faster than reading a FILE on the file system... Why this result ?Is there a way to optimize the perfCat.zsh script by reducing the number of accesses to the file system ?

I am having a laptop with Vista installed on it. I have an Ubuntu live CD (karmic) which is refusing to boot on this machine. I get an error : "Error reading boot CD" and a reboot button. I have tried this cd on other machines and it works fine. I tried live CD of kubuntu also but the same error message appears. What could be the reason?
Machine spec: 2GB RAM, Intel core 2 duo processor.
Recently, I had to switch harddrives on one of my servers due to the need for hardware.
However, when I switched back to the original harddrive I got a surprise : Instead of booting normally in OpenSuse 11.3, it booted in the grub shell.
I did a root ( hd0,1) but when I attempted the setup cmd it failed. Thinking that I probably was a configuration error ( nothing was changed - the drive had spent some time in a nice anti static bag ) I booted using a USB key.
To my surprise I got a message stating that parted couldn't read the other partitions ( boot and swap ) and hence I would not be able to edit then. Fortunately, the data partition seemed OK so I can backup the data.
Preferbly, I would like to be able to restore my original system.
I have a SONY VAIO CW26 laptop. I got a Windows-7 version prepacked with the laptop.I installed Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 over a new partition that i created using the inbuiltfacility in windows7. Both the operatings systems i.e windows7 and ubuntu karmic 9.1 were working nicely.Today i created 2 more partition within the partition inside windows.Once I rebooted after creation of the new partitions my laptop is just showing a black screen with following message.
GRUB loading.

when i try to boot the 11.04 64-bit alternate.iso i get the following message, after it says that isolinux blabla is loaded: EDD: Error 8000 reading sector 2855 and when i remove the cd it says: gfx.c32: not a COM32R imageand then there is a grub-shell.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI did a horrible mistake due to lapse in my concentration. Here is the 80 GB IDE disk geometry:
=> C: Windows XP SP2 15 GB partition
=> D: NTFS parition - 10 GB
=> E:F:G:H: NTFS partitions on the Windows Extended partition.
=> On the same Extended partition, there exists Linux /swap and /root partitions.
What happened was:
a) I wanted to delete the H: parition which was residing adjacent to Linux partition
b) By mistake I opened the Explorer and clicked the Mouse on H: partition and left it like that (forgot)
c) I opened Add/Remove program list but did nothing, to do few uninstalls after partition deletion.
d) Now I opened compmgmt.msc for Disk Management then deleted the H: partition!
Then XP reacted strangely and got almost hung
e) Then I switched OFF and ON the PC.
f) Most shocking was GRUB screen vanished (crash console appears) which means that Linux partition got deleted instead of H: partition!!
It's important to share with you that Fedora Core 12 possess the default BOOT flag. I thought that it's nothing big deal, only a case of Boot flag toggle with DOS bootable CD but am shell shocked to find after hitting the fdisk from DOS it says Error reading the disk!!! I felt like collapsed for a while, don't know how I did such a mistake. how to boot into my Windows XP. I can't afford to loose data or bear the expense on Data recovery
I'm trying to follow a few commands that have been recommended to to get my system to boot again .
The following are the commands:
Code:
Then modify the first command I gave you to read:
Code:
All other commands should work:
Code:
At the end, you should also run the following commands:
Code:
And here is the terminal readout from the first few commands:
Code:
Am I right that at this point I should issue the " -f " command or should I issue the -f at the end of the last command?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just started learning how to manipulate Linux (Debian Lenny) about a month ago with the intention of ditching Windows eventually and learning to configure serversn the process. But, I still need Windows for certain things. I downloaded and installed VirtualBox (I know, VMWare is better, but I didn't know that at the time and don't want to go through the process all over again) and got Windows XP working with a tap interface and bridge interface to get the guest OS to talk to the home OS and connect to the Internet.
My only problem is that the tap interface and bridge interface disappear when I reboot and then I have to issue the commands to set them up all over again. I know there is a way to write a script to run on boot to create them and bring them up, but my whole technical career has been with CLI-based stuff, not scripting. I'd like to eventually learn it, but I'm a learn-by-doing type. Basically I need the following commandsto be implemented at startup:
sudo tunctl -t tap1 -u allen
sudo brctl addbr br0
sudo ifconfig eth0 0.0.0.0 promisc

View 3 Replies View RelatedUnfortunately, I find that Fedora 15 may have been released a bit too soon, due to it's lack of freedom. Examples: desktop customization yes. I used gnome-tweak-tool and yes I like gnome 3, but I much prefer gnome 2 + compiz,emerald for it's much more pleasant to the eye. Gnome 3 should have been an option, not forced on to the community! Other reason, desktop recording, the original recordmydesktop via command line has a much higher quality than the gnome 3 which is not even worth bothering since the gnome 3 freezes afterwards leaving a poor video playback that resembles an early 2000's .gif image! Another thing is it does not read my mp3 player while fedora 12-14 had absolute no issues! I will be returning to fedora14 until gnome 3 is fully established and meets the requirements of it's loyal customers!!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a server in which I'm trying to install Debian into. There's no BIOS, only EFI boot. The vendor locked it down so there's no way to see it or get into it.
The Wheezy 7.8 netinst CD has EFI boot parameters and works on everything I throw it in, except this one server. Booting it up, the code doesn't see the EFI and boots into normal mode, negating every chance to install it (dozens upon dozens of failed installs).
During boot, I press the [TAB] at the Debian Linux installer menu and get the load parameters (/install.amd/vmlinuz vga=788 etc). What parameter can I add to this line to get it to run in UEFI mode so we can install it?
I have openSUSE 11.2 and boot using GRUB. I was looking on start-up options for 11.2 and saw where it said

I was wondering what they meant?
I want to turn off CPU throttling, and I notice how each time opensuse boots up, it imposes it.
I would like to know where it does this. I suspect - but actually I don't really know - if it's the HAL daemon that does this. Could be.
In any case, rather than have to key it in each time, I put the relevant commands (cpufreq-set) in boot.local. No effect.
I suspect boot.local might not be the best place for such a heavy duty command like this one.
Are there any there places I could put it so that it executes automatically?
I downloaded rhel 5.5 CD 1 iso to my PC, and used it as a virtual CD-ROM to kickstart HP DL380 G4.Here is my questions:
1. how can I cut and paste boot commands (very long strings) from my PC to iLO remote console?
2. is there anyway I can get "boot prompt" by ssh to iLo's IP?
3. after kickstart, I want to eject the virtual CD-ROM / media, I have tried the following method in the kickstart profile, but all failed, after reboot, it still boot from the virtual CD-ROM. So how can I reject the virtual CD-ROM for rhel 5.5 kickstart?
I'm having a weird problem with libusb-1.0. I have a fresh install of Fedora 11. I'm trying to control a USB HID device (own development) and I want to offer Linux support via libusb. Writing to the device is not a problem and works without any problem. The problems starts when I want to read from the device. Under Windows everything works without a problem.
Via lsusb -v I get this information:

I need to run to terminal commands at boot to get my wireless card working, the included drivers with ubuntu dosen't work for my card so I compiled my own broadcom drivers. I am on 9.10 ubuntu. I need these commands ran at boot in order for my wireless to work.
#sudo modprobe lib80211
#sudo insmod wl.ko
I have done these commands as per the readme included with the source files.
# load driver as described above
# cp wl.ko /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/net/wireless
# depmod -a
The kubuntu 9.10 CD boots normally and present all the install options on Acer computer M3202 (AMD Athlon II X3 triple-core processor) and M3100 (AM3100-UD5200A. AMD Athlon64 x2) but not X1800 (AX1800-E9232. Intel Core2 Quad Processor Q8200). The "804200EF" number appears on the top left corner of the screen. The error screen with the red title "I/O error" and the message "Error reading the boot CD. Reboot". appear. Windows 7 is running ok on Acer X1800 so its hardware should be ok.
BTW, the System Rescue CD 1.3.4 does not work on Acer M3202 and X1800 but works correctly on M3100.

I need to read some data from a hdd that belongs to an old SCO Unix system. The SCSI card is PCI so I unplugged it from the old SCO unix box and stuck it in a new computer and booted using a Fedora 14 USB pen drive. The SCSI card was recognized and so was the hdd but it was not mounted. I then went into Applications, Disk Utility, and found the hdd. Under 'Edit Partition' the type was blank. I was tempted to set it to 'Extended' but was not sure whether that could damage the data on the disk. Does anyone know whether I would be able to read this Hdd by setting the type to 'Extended'?
View 5 Replies View RelatedRecently changed my motherboard. The new board has the 790FX/SB750 chipset, and the old board used the 770/SB600 chipset. Prior to the change, I had never had any problems reading/writing CDs or DVDs. I now find that reading a data CD is very slow, it can take up to 30 secs before the icon appears on the desktop and a filer window appears. In my tests thus far, only data CDs written on Linux can always be read, albeit slowly. Data CDs written on Windows are variable. Some are never seen by the system, others may or may not be opened. That is I might be able to read it during one test, and next time I try I can't.
When a CD is not 'seen', there is an initial flurry of activity by the drive, but the drive icon (in "Computer' window) doesn't think a disc is in the drive. I can boot OK off a DVD, and data DVDs wrtten on Linux are opened and read quite fast. I am running Fedora 12 x86_64 with the latest Fedora kernel package (2.6.32.9-70), and the Motherboard bios is the latest available. The CD/DVD drive is a SATA Pioneer DVR-215. I have checked the bios settings, and have tried setting 'storage configuration' to IDE and to AHCI, each giving the same result.
I tried switching the SATA data cable from SATA-3 to SATA-2 and was able to open and read a Windows data CD that had previously not been seen, but subsequent attempts have failed to open and read that CD. I suspect the problem may have something to do with hardware drivers, but I really am guessing about this and have not been able to find any useful information on this.
