General :: Live Cd Error Reading Boot Cd?

Apr 26, 2010

I am having a laptop with Vista installed on it. I have an Ubuntu live CD (karmic) which is refusing to boot on this machine. I get an error : "Error reading boot CD" and a reboot button. I have tried this cd on other machines and it works fine. I tried live CD of kubuntu also but the same error message appears. What could be the reason?

Machine spec: 2GB RAM, Intel core 2 duo processor.

Ubuntu :: Can't Get Anywhere With Lucid CD - "104280EF" - I/O Error - Error Reading Boot CD

Jun 9, 2010

After using Hardy on this machine for the past 2 years, I figured maybe it's time to try Lucid. So I burnt a Lucid live cd, and get the following message:
/quote]

Pressing keys has no effect. [b]Ctrl+Alt:F[i]n[/n] doesn't do nothing.Nor does anything else I try. If I click on the Reboot button, it ends up wgere it started. Ogh, and the numbers 104280EF are also on the screen.

There's also a pretty picture accompanying all this: something that looks like a very small spreadsheet, and a stick-figure in a circle and... and I don't know what the heck is going on.

Ubuntu Installation :: Kubuntu 9.10 CD Has "Error Reading The Boot CD" On Acer X1800

Jan 6, 2010

The kubuntu 9.10 CD boots normally and present all the install options on Acer computer M3202 (AMD Athlon II X3 triple-core processor) and M3100 (AM3100-UD5200A. AMD Athlon64 x2) but not X1800 (AX1800-E9232. Intel Core2 Quad Processor Q8200). The "804200EF" number appears on the top left corner of the screen. The error screen with the red title "I/O error" and the message "Error reading the boot CD. Reboot". appear. Windows 7 is running ok on Acer X1800 so its hardware should be ok.

BTW, the System Rescue CD 1.3.4 does not work on Acer M3202 and X1800 but works correctly on M3100.

General :: Why Is Reading A FILE Faster Than Reading A VARIABLE?

May 4, 2011

I don't understand the results of a simple performance test I ran using two basic scripts (running on a high end server):

perfVar.zsh :

#!/bin/zsh -f
MYVAR=`cat $1`
for i in {1..10}
...

Performance test result:

> time ./perfVar.zsh BigTextFile > /dev/null
./perfVar.zsh FE > /dev/null 6.86s user 0.32s system 100% cpu 7.177 total
> time ./perfCat.zsh BigTextFile > /dev/null
./perfCat.zsh FE > /dev/null 0.01s user 0.10s system 91% cpu 0.118 total

I would have thought that accessing a VARIABLE was way faster than reading a FILE on the file system... Why this result ?Is there a way to optimize the perfCat.zsh script by reducing the number of accesses to the file system ?

Ubuntu Installation :: Drive Quits Reading Live CD?

Oct 30, 2010

I decided to install Maverick on another PC in the house. I downloaded and burnt the 10:10 live CD three weeks ago and installed it on my laptop without problem.

Now when try to install on this it read the CD as first boot device, goes to the language selection, and then the "try without installing/Install/check disk" etc. I select either "install" or "try without installing" and after s few seconds the drive spins down and thats it...nothing more happens.

I know the CD's fine as I already installed with it and the PC in question currently has a working version of Karmic on it. PC is an Acer L100 and the CD is the 32 bit version.

Update: After posting this I've played around a bit more. It seems most attempts it doesnt want to read the Live CD at all. After trying to boot from it and displaying the copyright line "isolinux..." it jump straight GRUB and boots my present OS. I've just tried the Karmic CD too and the same thing is happening. So maybe points to a problem with the CD drive??

Ubuntu :: Grub Rescue Error: No Such Partition And Can't Boot To Live CD/USB!

Dec 2, 2010

I have a netbook that dual-boots Win XP and Ubuntu 10.04 and accidentally hit the Win recovery mode in GRUB today, but quickly restarted without formatting or proceeding with any recovery. But upon reboot I just see: error: no such partition. grub rescue>

What I have tried so far: Boot to USB Live Disk... It won't, just goes straight to grub rescue.I do ls and it gives me (hd0) (hd0,4) (hd0,3) (hd0,2) (hd0,1) (fd0) error: fd0 cannot get C/H/S values.

set gives me
prefix=(hd0,5)/boot/grub
root=hd0,5

but if I try to boot it says unknown command so I figured I needed to find the right partition to boot from but I went through all of them with ls (hd0,4)/boot, ls (hd0,3)/boot etc. and every partition comes back "unknown filesystem".

OpenSUSE Install :: Mount A Live Compressed File System For Reading & Writing From A LiveCD/DVD Image?

Jul 9, 2011

On a Linux CD/DVD, there are compressed filesystem images for the live version for KDE or Gnome for example, but they have no extension, but they are clearly an image file ( compressed filesystem images for the live version before installation ) !!

I was wondering, How do I mount these compressed filesystem images, after I copy the ISO content of the CD/DVD on my system .... I want to edit some files or packages and make some changes, like if I want to customize a live version of gnome for example ! ... ( I know you might be tempted to tell me to use KIWI etc to customize etc ..... ) ... but I want to be able to mount the compressed file system image, then edit it for reading and writing while it is in a subdirectory on its own ... i want to open it ! ... is there a way to do this ??? ... these type of files have no extension ...

i can open this compressed filesystem image then to edit for read & write ... before I roll it back again ..... If and when I succeed .... what should I watch out for ? ... will the same compressed file image but slightly modified work again ?

PS. that same question could be kind of translated or be extended like : how do I use unionfs/squashfs programs on the command line to mount these image files with no extension for read & write mode ???

Debian Configuration :: Error Starting Domain: Internal Error Process Exited While Reading Console Log Output

Sep 9, 2010

I have mounted an NFS share with ISO images on my kvm Server. If i connect such a iso to a VM (using virt-manager) for installing a operating system i get the following error on startup: Error starting domain: internal error Process exited while reading console log output: char device redirected to /dev/pts/1 qemu: could not open disk image /mnt/iso/public/Linux/Distributions/Debian/debian-504-amd64-netinst.iso: Permission denied

The problem is definitly that kvm (or qemu or libvirt-bin, i don't know) tries to set permissions (rwx owner for libvirt-qemu, --- for kvm group, --- for other) on the file, although it has read permissions. Is it possible to change this behavior?

Ubuntu :: Live Usb Not Boot , It Always Says "BOOT ERROR" ?

Mar 21, 2010

19 of March, 2010, I heard that Ubuntu 10.04 Alpha 3 has been released, and I was like OMG~ Kewl! Proceeded to download because of the "We guarantee 15 second boot time! XD" thing. I've been using Ubuntu for exactly two years. It was 11 PM when I began the download. Everything was in ship shape.I left the thing on and displayed a note saying "DONT TOUCH OR I'LL F***ING KILL YOU!" On the screen. Simple enough.

Next morning : 20th March, 2010 : "Great my birthday is tomorrow, and I have a new distribution. Yayz!" thought me, when I woke up. Went to the room where my computer is situated and WTF?!? I saw no GUI and only a CUI! ARGH. It was my god damn sister who prematurely shut down the PC last night despite the warning signs I erected. And apparently during an important procedure too. And OMG my BDAY is tomorrow. So, being that guy who loves fixing stuff in awkward situations, I managed to successfully revert the thing in GUI mode. BUT WTH? 67% disk used up and "X cannot apply configurations" in other words F***ING LOW GRAPHICS MODE!!!. Ok, thought me. I can handle this.

I created another partition of 30 GB and decided to install Ubuntu 10.04 there. Than I'd transfer any files I need, destroy the old partition and combine the unallocated space with the 30 GB partition. "Great plan dude," thought me to myself.Unfortunately, as life shows : Life isn't so easy, buster. My CD-ROM is utterly demolished and All I have is a crappy Kingston Data Traveler 2 GB smiling sheepishly at me. I decide to create a live USB, but it's not so easy.

I've attempted to use 54 different methods of creating a LIVEUSB but they all JUST DON't WORK!It always says "BOOT ERROR" (In caps) when I try to boot the stupid thing.

General :: Live CD Won't Boot On IBM M52

Jun 28, 2011

I have just tried to load Ubuntu 11.04 live CD (DVD) onto an IBM M52/MMC/8214. I bought the M52 to replace an older PC, which loaded the DVD without problem, so there is no problem with the DVD. The M52 works fine with Windows. Following is what happens when I try to load the DVD:

...finds Mac address
...finds GUID
...sits on DHCP.../ for a couple of minutes
then displays
...PXE-E53: No boot filename received
followed by
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent
1962: No operating system found.

It then boots into Windows. I'm not entirely new to Linux, having played with Ubuntu for a while, but have never had a problem. Now, I'm stuck!

General :: Burning Dvd From Live Boot

Mar 25, 2011

M$ 7 on my new laptop (one month out of warranty)has died. I have several iso files and several downloaded programs that I wish to put on DVDs before I do a restore. I have tried Slax, Kubuntu, and Mint from USB live boot. None of them will let me burn the files to DVDs. My largest USB stick is 4gig. K3b in Slax shows that I don't have enough temp file space, but will not let me use the hard drive for temp.
Options I am considering:

Getting a larger USB stick. Booting from CD and copying up to 4gigs at a time and moving it to my desk top. Resizing the ntfs partition to give me about 20-30gigs for installing Slackware. Buying an external hard drive and copy them to it. (starting to really like this one) Forgetting it and restore and spend many hours downloading them again. (Really would rather not) I can do any of these options, but want to see if there is an option I haven't considered.
