Red Hat / Fedora :: One Of The LVM Partition Does Not Show Up?
May 26, 2011
Created partitions, some of them LVM, in a server, say A. Did the same for another server, B, but one more LVM partition.
Installed RHEL in A, and some other applications. Made dump files for each partition of A and restored them in B. No error in that process, except B won't boot. Did chroot /mnt/sysimage and grub-install /dev/sda--still no good. B came to a halt with GRUB> dispalyed. Gave up, and restored the bootloader part-- I say restored because now B boots ok and I can see application that I had installed in A. So far so good.
Problem: that extra LVM partition is missing! I did not knowingly overwrite it, so where did it go?
Is it the grub.conf that tells the OS what to mount and what not to? If yes, problem is , grub.conf is missing. In A, it is in /boot/grub/.
df -kh shows other partions (some of them LVM) just fine.. what is going on?
I tracked a file called menu.lst in a strange place, in /usr/share/doc/grub-0.97.. but I didn't see any entry that loads partitions.

I reinstalled Debian today, and changed partition tables. Now I have 4 partitions, 3 of which are encrypted, including / (root). Everything was fine at first, but now, instead of the partition label I've chosen, I see this: 120 GB Unrecognized Everything works fine, I just don't understand what this is all about.
EDIT 1:I don't understand something else too, which might be related. First time, I didn't need to enter root password for things like Synaptic and so, is this somehow related? (Now I'm being asked for, like normal way)
EDIT 2: I know the label is ROOT, I used e2label. But it still doesn't show the right name...

p { margin-bottom: 0.08in; } I have been using a dual boot with Vista and Ubuntu 10.10 successfully some time now. Today my computer shut down unexpectedly when I in Vista. I am completely new to Linux in general, and have recently downloaded Fedora 15 KDE spin. I tried dual-booting between Windows 7 and Fedora by shrinking one of my Windows partitions (I have two, this partition not containing the Windows installation). I tried shrinking it to 30 GB less than the total space available on the partition, and after pressing continue, received an error (which I unfortunately dismissed quickly and can't remember). In the file manager, Fedora showed that my partition changed from 1.3Tb to 1.2 Tb, but I couldn't access it. Upon rebooting into Windows, I still can't access it, receiving a "format drive before use" popup and then error stating that it is possibly of a different filesystem or corrupt.
Unfortunately, I stupidly didn't backup any of my data (which I will be sure to remember to do in the future). I installed EASEUS Partition Master 8.0.1 Home Edition, which states that my drive is still of NTFS filesystem and has the total space it should. However, upon clicking "check drive," it states there are no errors and when trying to "explore files," it doesn't find any (yet it shows the correct amount of used and unused space). I then tried running TestDisk, but only allows me to check my media drive E, which is my dvd drive that has my Fedora Live CD in it (which cannot be ejected manually or through Windows, an error stating it cannot be ejected). I didn't go through with TestDisk for my DVD drive because I needed to verify the type of partition (which to my knowledge shouldn't even exist). It shows 700 something MiB / 600 something MiB. Although I have decent general knowledge about computers, I am a complete novice when it comes to doing something like this.

I have a 2 TB disk in an external SATA dock, formatted with a single ext3 (Linux) partition, which doesn't show up in the Windows 7 Computer Management->Disk Management utility, even as a raw/blank disk. I've verified that there's nothing wrong with the disk by connecting it to my Linux machine and mounting it, and I've verified that the dock is functioning properly by connecting a different FAT32-formatted disk, which mounts flawlessly as expected.I realize that I can't actually read the ext3 partition without additional software (e.g., Ext3IFS), but why doesn't the disk show up at all? Is there some sort of stupid anti-Linux filter built in? Is there any way to force Windows to recognize the disk, so that I can at the very least use direct block access with it?
Background: I want to clone an identical 2 TB disk onto this one. Due to my hardware layout, it's much easier to have the source disk attached to one machine and the destination disk connected to another, and do the clone over the network (the network is not a bottleneck with switched gigabit ethernet), than it is to hook them both up to one machine.(1) I did this once before when both machines were running Linux, but I've since upgraded the destination machine and decided to switch back to Windows for regular desktop use. I've got Cygwin installed, and have verified that the same basic method (dd + nc) will work, but I can't do anything if Windows doesn't even consider the destination disk to exist.I only have one eSATA port on each machine. Opening them up just to do this clone is a rather large annoyance. Also, since this is my backup disk, I'd like to eventually automate the cloning from the active disk to another one that I regularly swap with a third disk that I store off-site.

I configured it to use IMAP to access our exchange 2010 server front end on a LAN connection. Our webmail connection is segregated behind Forefront, so it was not connecting/authing that way. Even though smartphones have no problem. (sidenote, is there an activesync linux mail client ?)
I have many root folders and several folders underneath my inbox. total mailsize in inbox is 3.5 GB without subfolders. The sent is likewise as large. And is likewise empty.
Things I checked already:
View is all
Folder subscription is on and local copy is on
More info:
Thunderbird worky fine.
But thunderbird is missing calender
Tried adding lightening, but it won't add into thunderbird.
Will try finding a diff add on, or if anyone knows how to get lightening into thunderbird 3.1.8 on ubuntu 10 that would be great as well.

I installed Redhat Enterprise 3 on one of my servers. In my haste I didn't properly partition both Hard Drives and only properly partitioned one of them. Thus now I have
/dev/sdb1 478711768 137858256 316536328 31% /
/dev/sda1 101089 15346 80524 17% /boot
Where /dev/sda1 is actually a 80 GB hard drive. Is there anyway I can safely and easily repartition the unpartitioned space without causing a huge mess? I have a very important Oracle database on /dev/sdb1 and thus I want to be able to back it up on the second disk. I can create a partition on that drive?

I installed fedora 13 64 bit and it works great but I encountered several issues when setting up guest OS with KVM. The problem seems to be related to selinux. But let me first ask question about logical volume. By Default fedora created logical volumes:
[Code].....
"If you expect that you or other users will store data on the system, create a separate partition for the /home directory within a volume group. With a separate /home partition, you may upgrade or reinstall Fedora without erasing user data files." seems to suggest I have to create a separate physical partition and assign that to /home. But reading elsewhere it seems to suggest logical volume acts like a partition. My goal is to make it easy in case fedora is hosed and I have to re-install it without affecting /home where my cirtical data resides. Given above do I need to create a separate physical partition or I am just fine?
I have a second hard disk that originally had windows and all my data. Windows is hosed but I can see my data from within Fedora and Windows is gone and I created created new partition in its place which used ot be the C:/ drive appears as 53 Gb filesystem. My data which was originally D drive appears as 215 GB filesystem. As given in [URL] I want to create a new logical volume in 53 Gb filesystem which I want to use as space for virtual disk to install guest OS's in KVM. Currrently 53 GB filesystem is mounted as /media/3467BH89JK789 but this does not work well with KVM. how do I create this logical volume out of 53 Gb filesystem partition and add proper selinux info and do I add to vg_vostrolx volume group and in a different volume group?

for example if I want to create a an "Empty File", I'll right-click on desktop and when I want to go to "Create Document" menu, it doesn't show up! so I must click somewhere else and try again so for the second time it works!!

However, every, single time my mouse slips up to the top left corner, it activates. Not only that, when it does it, all of my screenlets Go Away, and the only way to get them back is to restart them. how to tell Compiz that I Really Mean It when I say that I don't want it to show the desktop?

I noticed that there are some updates (stable) in Bodhi and Fedora Community, but neither yum nor PackageKit have shown any updates available for install since 04.07.2009.
I tried the following in various combinations:
pkcon make-updates
yum clean all
yum check-updates
yum make-cache
yum remove yum-presto
Disabling and re-enabling repos.
When I enable updates-testing then updates from this repo are shown. But I'm positive there are some stable updates avaiable and yum just doesn't show them
yumupdatesd is enabled
Don't get any errors on the command line
Didn't notice any errors in logfiles
I had updated yum-presto to yum-presto-0.5.0-1.fc11.noarch on that day, but have since removed it and still don't get any updates.

OK, I obviously did something wrong, but I dont think I did because i checked my kickstart file after installing.
When i do a df -h it shows that drives i set to 4096MB and 6144MB when I just installed the server, are showing as 3.9GB and 5.9GB respectively.
This is my first Linux install, does it not do the # x 1024 for partition sizes?

My question is related to the log in screen in Fedora 11, Gnome desktop, installed on my laptop. I currently have an account with the name Octav. When my computer starts-up i have a window with <my name> and <other> showing to choose from. When i click on my name, i type my password and i'm logged in.
Now my question, can i have my log in window, without my name written there, so i have an extra security if i may say. What I want is for me to type my username and then password to log in. I don't want my name been written on the screen.

I would like it to show civilian time (or at least know how to do it) I logged into the clock settings and had to put in the root password, but couldn't find where you do this. If you scroll on the time for hours, it just goes from 0 to 23 and back, not to AM and PM like some others.
