Red Hat / Fedora :: How To Install Gd With Png Support
May 4, 2010
I've been trying to install gd with png support. libpng is installed on my server, but for some reason the png.h file isn't anywhere to be found. So, I can't install gd with png support. I'm a linux dummy, so I'm not sure what I need to do to get the headers installed. I did manage to find libpng rpm. I don't know how to make it install headers.

In FC11 i686, I notice that after yum install xsane xsane -v reports a version of xsane that is compiled without Gimp support. Is there a special name for the xsane package that does have Gimp support?

First of all I'm not a very experienced linux user, I have installed fedora 13 on my HP Laptop and it has 8Gb installed, (confirmed in Bios) grep MemTotal /proc/meminfo
MemTotal: 3088492 kB It's less then 8Gb
googling about it it seems that I ineed PEA support for my kernel. It seems that fedora 13 should install this if needed, correct me if I'm wrong. uname -a Linux mjohanss-pc.kentor.se 2.6.33.6-147.2.4.fc13.i686 #1 SMP Fri Jul 23 17:27:40 UTC 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux If PEA support was installed I think PEA should be seen after .fc13.i686 in the output. How can I install and configure PEA support so all my memory is recognized?

I am installing Ubuntu Server 10.10 on and old Dell Laptop. The network connection is an Xircom PCMCIA card.During install, the computer sees and interacts via the network just fine. For example, I can ping the gateway. Also, the command "lspcmcia" works and show the Xircom card.When I reboot, however, there is no network access, and the "lspcmcia" command is not there. When I try "lspcmcia" the OS helpfully tells me that I can "apt-get" pcmciautils, but, without network access, that fails.I tried adding the install cdrom to apt using "apt-cdrom" and then tried to "apt-get" pcmciautils and it got further, installing some dependencies, but acted like it still was unable to locate the pcmciautils package.

I was thinking of trying out the UEFI support that HP has in my laptop BIOS in the next few days. My reasons is that I get a custom boot logo... and (hopefully) a better boot-speed. What is the current state of affairs with the openSuSE UEFI/EFI install support on a empty hdd for x86_64 does anyone know? (badly worded I apologize) This may seem naive but I have struggled to answer this with most posts being about Mac's for obvious reasons.
Specifically, Do I have to have any custom knowledge on formatting the HDD with a GPT partitions or does the installer do this for you? Secondly, How well does the UEFI bootloader tie in with the config tools in YaST2? (I would like to have UEFI but if it turns into some headache in setting up the boot area by hand each time the kernel updates I will forget it.) I can safely say this will be a machine with only openSuSE installed as an OS, no need for any others or any dual-boot problems. This isn't overly urgent and I will dedicate (at least) a whole weekend to tweaking once I buy a new disk and install openSuSE on it. If nobody knows then I will dive in head first and report how I find it and any problems (and severity).

I'm trying to find out when QME2572 (Qlogic) card became support by the kernel. We have a RHEL 5.1 system that is moving to new hardware, however the kernel at this release doesn't support the new hardware, due to the Qlogic card change. I tired the Redhat KB and Bugzilla. Is there a Kernel change list etc I can search. Never really played around with the kernel too much so I'm just after some pointers for looking up this information. Offically its not supported until Redhat 5.3, I'm trying trying to research kernel info so I can tell the customer they have to upgrade.

In OpenSuse 11.2 it was possible to pass the ip configuration on the kernel command line and the kernel would configure the interface (eth0 in my case) properly. The ifcfg-eth0 needed to be configured as 'static' and 'auto' with the other parameters absent. The kernel arg would look like: ip=<client-ip>:<server-ip>:<gw-ip>:etc:etc
This no longer works or works differently in OpenSuse 11.3, despite the fact that ip_pnp seems to be compiled into the kernel. Is there some way to enable this in 11.3? I just want to do basic static routing with the parameters passed directly to the kernel instead of hard-coded in the ifcfg-eth0.
p.s. in 11.3 when I try to do the ip_pnp method the eth0 does come up but none of the routing is correct. There is no default gateway and no ip is assigned even though I am passing the kernel args properly.

I want to experiment with hugepages support in KVM. I have added
<memoryBacking>
<hugepages/>
</memoryBacking>
to my domain xml.
Also I create the directory /hugepages and mounted it using
mount -t hugetlbfs hugetlbfs /hugepages/
and created huge pages using
echo 4096 > /proc/sys/vm/nr_hugepages
Now, when starting the domain from virt-manager, I get the message:
libvirtError: internal error hugetlbfs filesystem is not mounted
What is the recommended way to setup hugepages in opensuse 11.3?

I'm looking to dual-boot Windows 7 and Debian 6 upon its release on my sister's laptop. I want to share a partition between the two of them so that /home points to this directory and the Windows equivalent also points to it (C:Users).
Anyway, I've heard good and bad things about the NTFSMount driver (I think it's NTFS-3G now) and the NTFSprogs project and so I am not so certain what I should believe. I do know that NTFS has relatively high overhead, though I do not recall the source of this assertion, so I am considering the use of EXFAT. An open source EXFAT project is hosted on Google Code at [url] and it utilizes the kernel module FUSE.
I'm quite certain that I've got everything covered on the Windows side -- that is, I know that both NTFS and EXFAT will be suitable filesystems for my required usage.
My issue is that I'm curious which will have superior performance and stability in Debian. I planned on building the package from source and mounting the device in my FSTAB but I have also found a PPA for Ubuntu on Launchpad at [url] that I could borrow the debian/rules from and make a .deb package from.
What do you guys think? Should I go at it with the EXFAT or NTFS partitioning? Is NTFS-3G actually fairly supported at this point? Or perhaps should I consider some alternate method?
I have also considered that the only files she will be sharing are those of music, videos, and pictures so it could be better to just link /home/xxxx/Pictures (Music and Videos, too) to the new partition instead of all of /home.

I'm running a Debian Wheezy system. There are a lot of characters I want to use from the U+1F*** set of characters. But when I use them or look them up in the character map, all I see is the square with the code inside. Is there some font package I can install from the repository that has better support for these characters?
E.g., when I am instant messaging my girlfriend, I like to use the HEAVY BLACK HEART character (❤, U+2764). But there are a whole bunch of other "romantic" characters that are listed but not actually displaying for me, like the KISS MARK (U+1F48B), which I would like to use. These characters apparently show up on her system, which is an android phone.

I tried installing Ubuntu via the latest Wubi on my HP machine; AMD64 processor, NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE graphics card. After restarting and selecting Ubuntu, my monitor (Viewsonic) told me it had no input, and proceeded to stand itself by. The computer sat there, turned on with no monitor, for about half an hour, and when I came back, windows was up. I tried restarting into Ubuntu again, got to the Grub menu, and selected Ubuntu before the same thing occurred. This time I didn't wait, but hard restarted it after a minute oh waiting. When I tried starting Ubuntu in Safe Graphics mode, I got through the initial bash bootup instructions before this occurred.

I'm a first time user of ubuntu and any other form of Linux. I decided to install ubuntu on an old Dell Latitude D600. The LAN controller is a Broadcom BCM4306 [14e4;4320] (rev 02). I honestly thought that once I installed ubuntu I would have no problem connecting to my wireless router. I was wrong.
A FAQ on this forum states that I need to install drivers/firmware because presumably there is no out of the box support. I read the FAQ [URL]..Debian and it seems that I need to get the driver/firmware then issue some command to put it where it needs to go.

I'm trying hard to get my new usb wireless adapter to work with my ubuntu desktop 9.04.
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic git-core libssl-dev
Next, download the drivers for the tool-chain
cd /usr/src/
sudo git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mcgrof/otus.git
[code].....
my wireless network appear disabled in the network list. There is one network in the list enabled which is using WEP. I think this is because my network is using WPA or WPA2 and that the installed driver needs a suppleant driver to work correctly. I dowloaded the driver package from DLINK [URL] Now when I open the package I see that there is a wpa_supplicant-0.4.8_otus.tar.gz. Untaring it gives me a folder with source code...

I would like to install on my box FFMPEG with libx264 support. First of all I've tried yum install ffmpeg, but it occurs that it downloads a version from 2007 (?) and without libx264. Than I've tried this: [URL]. And everything goes ok till last ./configure:
./configure --enable-gpl --enable-postproc --enable-nonfree --enable-postproc --enable-libfaad --enable-swscale --enable-avfilter --enable-pthreads --enable-libxvid --enable-libx264 --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libfaac --disable-ffserver --disable-ffplay
And in this moment I do "make" and get:
-bash-3.2# make
gcc -DHAVE_AV_CONFIG_H -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE -D_ISOC9X_SOURCE -I"/usr/local/lib/tmp/ffmpeg2/ffmpeg" -I"/usr/local/lib/tmp/ffmpeg2/ffmpeg" -fomit-frame-pointer -pthread -g -Wdeclaration-after-statement -Wall -Wno-switch -Wdisabled-optimization -Wpointer-arith -Wredundant-decls -Wno-pointer-sign -Wcast-qual -Wwrite-strings -O3 -fno-math-errno
-c -o libswscale/swscale.o libswscale/swscale.c .....
libswscale/swscale.c:3409: warning: assignment discards qualifiers from pointer target type
make: *** [libswscale/swscale.o] Error 1
And as you can see I get a lots of errors. Tried to install it for 5 day now, How to make this work??
