how do you get color in the terminal like DSL in red-hat 9.
i have red-hat 9 running on a old 3dfx gaming pc I'd post a pic of the DSL terminal but the site would not let me
i recently installed 10.04 after hearing from a colleague that it was highly recommended, however after install, all i get is a black screen with various colors pixels at the tope of the screen. I've been trying to find a resolution, but have nevertheless come up empty, i really need to info that is/was on my desktop (passwords & such).
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an annoying text color problem. I don't know what to change to fix it. I have played around with System->Preferences->Appearance to no avail. Here is the problem: I am getting very light colored text so only the currently selected item is readable. The funny thing is that in Nautilus, Firefox, Chrome, Amarok, etc.. it's fine. It seems to be in only some programs in boxes with selectable line items, but also in the area that displays status updates in FileZilla. So I'm not sure how to pinpoint the problem.

I am trying to find a way to grep/awk through the output of a command to find text of a specific colour. The command's output has a range of colours signifying too many different things to specify using text, with colour being the only form of grouping.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.4 and, although that installation seemed to work OK for awhile, I have recently encountered a strange problem. I have a dual-boot system with Win XP and two releases of Ubuntu, 10.4 and 9.10. I installed the latter recently only to be able to run some legacy software. I believe the problem occurred sometime around or after the installation of the 9.10 package. Note that the 10.4 install was a clean install on a newly formatted HD, and not a normal upgrade from 9.10, which I installed later separately. The Ubuntu installations are on their own HD. Win XP is installed on its own separate HD.
Here's the problem. I can boot OK up to and including the appearance of the Grub 2 menu, which displays fine. From the menu I can chose Ubuntu 9.10, Win XP or several kernels of 10.4. The 9.10 Ubuntu boots completely normally, as does Win XP--no problems or irregularities with either of those. When I select one of the 10.4 Ubuntu kernels, the strangeness begins, as follows:
1.) The menu disappears, there is a brief period of blank screen, and then a bizarre screen appears. It has a violet/magenta background. The word "Ubuntu" appears in large type, with a couple of lines of text below it. However, all of the type is unreadable. Instead of being normal characters, all the text characters are displayed as blocks of seemingly random multi-colored pixels! I can recognize that it is supposed to be text, but the letters are just a bunch of colored pixels. I can recognize the large Ubuntu word because of its shape. Also, the whole text display occurs twice on the screen, one on the left and one on the right. Both are displayed as colored pixels.
2.) The screen stays there, as if frozen, and does not continue with installation of the kernel. After some experimenting, I discovered that if I press Ctrl-Alt-Del (!), the installation continues as one would expect: I soon get the normal login screen, am able to login OK, and my desktop soon appears as usual.
3.) However, once in the desktop, if I try to invoke a console window by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1-6, the console window appears, but the text on the screen is again rendered as little bunches of colored pixels, completely unreadable. I can, in fact, login at these screens, but the text remains colored pixels. I can escape back to a normal desktop by then pressing Ctrl-Alt-F7, and the desktop comes back completely normal. Interestingly, if I invoke a terminal from the main Applications/Accessories/Terminal menu, I get a normal terminal in a desktop window that is perfectly usable.
4.) If, from the boot menu, I choose the Ubuntu 9.10 choice, everything works fine and as expected, including the Ctrl-Alt-F1-6 console windows. This problem only occurs with the Ubuntu 10.4 menu options.
Since this problem only occurs with the Ubuntu 10.4 menu choices, my guess is that there is something askew in the display configuration of those specific choices. But, I've not discovered what to check for that configuration or how to correct it. I've checked out the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file, the /etc/grub.d number files, and /etc/default/grub, but can't find anything that seems to be the cause or the remedy.
I notice the colored syntax and keywords in the terminal - the green, the blue etc? I did this in my machine a long time. Now I cannot trace back to how I did this. I need to do this in a new machine right now.

The problem is when I run some command on the terminal, I need to wait for that command to finish before executing another command. This is very inconvinient, say If I open eclipse using the terminal, this eclipse program will hog to the terminal until I closed it. So if I want to use terminal again I have to open another one.Hence the question is: Is there any way open multi processes(command) using only one terminal?

View 4 Replies View RelatedHow do you increase the text size in the virtual terminal (the one you get to when you press ctrl+alt F1-6)? My monitor is pretty old and kind of small, so I need the bigger text size to really be able to use it at all. I tried to find the answer in google, but I couldn't find the answer. I found answers for suse and ubuntu and tried to use those. They said to edit part of the boot loader config file, but I couldn't find a similar line in the grub.conf file. And I don't want to play with it without knowing what I'm doing.

But I can't figure out the last step: "All you need to do to have this run at startup [instead of typing ./2fsrl in terminal manually each time] is add it to you startup programs." I tried creating a file path to the 2fsrl file in Preferences -> Startup Applications program, but upon re-starting the laptop, the multi-touch isn't enabled anymore. I'm sure I'm missing something simple. Can anyone advise? (Keep in mind my beginner's status!)
When I boot up F12, after I have decrypted the hard drives and after the services have started but before I get to the login screen my display flashes a series of interlaced lines across the screen. As far as i can tell theres no other problems with my computer, everything else seems to work fine. Its been there awhile now and its still there after a yum update. On first boot up of the day it shows white/gray lines (firstboot.jpg) [URL]. On subsequent shut down, boot ups it shows a blue, almost denim like display (shutdown.jpg) [URL]. Theres no problem if i just do a restart. Maybe related as well, last week some time my computer froze (opening large file, watching dvd and had firefox open, guess I ran out of memory?) So I did a reboot using the button on my computer, at the point where I usually get the coloured lines it instead showed a snapshot of my desktop just before it crashed. Though this happened after I first noticed the coloured lines.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently downloaded and installed Fedora 11 Alpha. I then installed the Nvidia drivers for my Graphics card (GeForce 7800 GTX). I discovered that Fedora 11 is using a Beta version of Xorg and an incompatible ABI. So, my drivers would not work with Fedora 11 without me dowgrading the Xorg server. I decided to reinstall Fedora 10 instead.
I started the install, and when the installation loaded the generic video drivers, my screen showed only a bunch of colored vertical lines. Fedora 10 doesn't allow me to install in text mode.
I have an ATI Radeon HD 3300 on-board video chipset, and an ATI Radeon HD 4350 PCI card. What I want is to have both displays available from one mouse/keyboard. I want to play media on one and have the other as my main desktop.The problem is that with Xinerama enabled, KDE desktop effects do not work (KDE says XComposite and XDamage are not available, even though I explicitly enabled them as extensions in the xorg.conf file), and performance is quite bad. Without Xinerama enabled, performance is great, desktop effects work great, but there's a lot of trouble with full-screen video, and the KWin window manager does not apply in the second display (although I can run a second instance of KWin on :0.1).

But I'm having problems connecting to it from both a PowerMac running Tiger and a MacBookPro running leopard.I can connect no problem from a machine running Slack12.2, have not setup port forwarding on my router to connect remotely yet.My Debian machine is running the latest stable release of squeeze with KDE4.I originally tried this with RealVNC Enterprise for OSX but I'm not gonna buy it so I need another alternative after the 30 day trial ends as they have no free version for OSX.
The situation is that I do freelance graphic design on the PowerMac with Cinema4D and Photoshop so I spend most of my time on that machine which is located in my home studio in my attic. Aside from the MacBook and a Dell desktop(family machine)all my other machines and network hardware are in the basement. So to go from the attic to the basement everytime I need to do something on another machine is not practical, and the only other machine I need to access on a regular basis is the Debian box in the basement, this makes the most sense.
I also have a 14 year old living in the house and he's fascinated by all this and will meddle in anything he gets the chance to so all the Linux machines and network hardware need to be behind lock and key.
I've been using openoffice.org a lot recently and I was hoping that I'd be able to cat the contents of the file solely through the terminal.What's the best way to do this? My thought is to use a command in a terminal to convert to plain text and cat the file.

I'm writting a BASH script for a solaris system and need to have text enter into a console window. I've got so far:

When I run it I get the terminal window but the text going into another window. Nothing that I've found on this site helps me so far. If this is the wrong board, I'm sorry but I figured I'm about as newbie as it gets.
On my RHEL6 Gnome Terminal, the text is overlapping. I tried with the "Use the system fixed width font" option or changing other fonts, but they did not change. Also, I tried creating .fonts.conf file that's posted as a solution for other but this did not help.
Thing is that the first time when I installed RHEL6, it looked ok, but 2nd installation on VirtualBox client and thereafter, this happens. I'm using the same installation source and options as the 1st time. Also, "Open Terminal" option is missing from pop-up window after 2nd installation (Terminal is still available from App->System Tools; just not from popup window).
I installed slackware recently and noticed that when ever i open up a konsole i get some random messages ,i wont get these in other terminals like rxvt or xterm Where are these texts fetched from and can i modify those text messages to put something of my own ?

One for the right hand and one for the left hand as I am ambidextrous, and would find it very convenient to have 2 mice.
