Programming :: Get Data From Multi Lined Text File Using Awk / Sed Or Perl - Grep And Cut Not Upto Par?
Jul 1, 2010
I need a loop that pulls out the user name into a variable and then pulls out the LastUpdate field into another variable so I can then perform a comparison against the last update field. Requirements are AIX tools including AWK, SED and Perl I am writing a script to check AIX users password expiration dates and if they are within the alerting period (ie. 7 days etc) it will email the user. I will release the full script into the public domain once completed. The text file I want to parse is formatted like:
Code:
colettel:
password = XSON0m4SdIQDw
lastupdate = 1260829398
andrewwa:
[code].....

I am using File::Find to go through a very large tree. I am looking for all xml files and open only those that contain a tag <Updated>. I then want to capture the contents of two tags <Old> and <New>.
My problem is, after I open the file and do the first grep for <Updated> (which does work), I am unable to grep again unless I close the file and open it.
I did something like this:
Quote:
find(&check, $dir);
sub check {
if ($_ =~ /.xml/){
open(FILE,"$_");
if (grep{/Updated/} <FILE>){ # <-- works
[Code]....

I am writting a program that reads a text file (music.txt) & stores it in a Data Structure. I am a novice learning over the internet so I this is something I have never done. How do I do this?
Quote:
Write a program that reads the data from the music.txt file and store it in a data structure. To implement this data structure you must use an array of songs and each song must be represented by a struct with appropriate fields. So far all I can do is open to file to read it (very simple I know) but so far is it correct?
Code:
#include <iostream>
#include <fstream>
#include <strstream>
[code]....

Was wondering if any perl guru's could help me with a quick log file adjustment. I have a text file that looks like so (tabs and newlines are revealed so you can see what separates the data):
There are maybe 100 lines of text in this file at any given time. I need to delete all duplicate lines only looking at the first bit of text prior to the first tab. It doesn't matter which one gets deleted as long as there are no two lines that begin with that same text at the beginning before the first tab. So in this example, either the fist line "1234" or the last line "1234" would need to be deleted. I already have code in my script that opens the files - I just need the code to read the text into an array and the part that would find matches based on the above criteria, and make the deletions.
If it would be easier, I can even do a system call and use SED (v4.1.5) and/or AWK (3.1.5) instead.

I have written a simple script which has to find required patterns from a bunch of files ( where each file is around 2 GB each,which contain the output of seq 1 10000000000000) on an 8 core machine.I am current forking 6 child processes which run simultaneously on 6 cores of the processor & have to search for the required pattern in 6 different files & inform the parent process when a pattern is found using a PIPE.
The problem is,when a child process is done reading a text file looking for a pattern,it is becoming a zombie process.It exits cleanly when i put a $SIG{CHLD} = "IGNORE"; in the script.Can any one tell me whats going on & how do i improve the communication between child and parent processes?
Code:
#!/bin/perl
use strict;

I've already used line split stuff to transform my data into something like this in a text file:
Code:
['1', '1', '3', '20.7505207']
['2', '1', '3', '23.0488319']
['3', '1', '3', '-1.5768747']
['4', '1', '3', '-26.4772491']
[code]....
How can I get this on a python program so I can manipulate it as an array?

I've been trying to figure out a way to more easily color text in Perl like I do on Bash on a Linux box. In bash, what I'll do is set color variables up to equal the escape sequence, then echo out with escape seqeunces to print it exactly how I want it. Typically I'll want a character or a word in a different color, not the whole line. For example
echo -n -e "My face is turning ${RED}red${UNCOLOR} like a lobster." In Perl with the term::ANSIColor module, it seems to just do a line. Am I being dense? Is there a way that I can do it like I do it in BASH that's fairly easy to read after the fact?

I'm trying to manipulate a large text file full of records (metadata - one complete record per line). I need to delete every line on which certain words appear - there are five different words, all pretty simple all-caps strings with occasional whitespace. I tried using grep -v, which worked a treat, but only string-by-string. Ideally I'd like to run this as grep -v -f, where the file targeted by the -f contains the strings I need to match in order to delete the lines they're in.
i.e. grep -v -f filecontainingSTRINGS.txt targetfile.txt > outputfile.txt
When I try this, however, I don't get any matches - or more specifically, no changes are made in the output file. It works fine if there's only one string in filecontainingSTRINGS, but it doesn't work if there's more than one (I'm using newline as the delimiter). (Also my machine doesn't recognise /usr/xpg4/bin/grep - no idea what that's all about!)

I need to search a text file for a string of numbers which are different lengths, and always are between number=" and " like:
number="1234567890"
number="22390"
I need to grab those numbers and pipe each one to a line in a file. I've already tried something with awk and that didn't seem to work.

I have a dataset of around 1000 lines. Out of these 1000 lines I need to pick randomly 160 lines of data and write it to a file. The program is needed to eliminate data bias when I run the program through a reanalysis program. I am thinking I need to use the rand or srand term, but I am having difficulty writing this in perl. I have to write it in perl, because the rest of my scripts for this project are in perl, so consistency is important. The data only consists of one column of the data (YYYYMMDDHHHH).

I have this program:
#! /usr/bin/perl
use DBI ;
use strict ;
[code]....
and I get this error simply running the program from the command line: DBD::mysql::st execute failed: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '' at line 1 at ./submit.cgi line 24.
is this the right syntax to use, both, for this line:
my (@param) = $cgi->param("firstname","lastname","type") ;
as well as this one:
$sth=$dbh->prepare ("SELECT firstname,lastname,type FROM dts WHERE firstname LIKE $param[0] AND lastname LIKE $param[1] and type LIKE $param[2]" );
or should there be quotes around the $param[0] or something? (also is it $param[0] or $param(0)?)

I'm trying to add local sockets in my multi-threaded application in order to exchange data between threads. The only problem I got is that most of the information available on the net is related to internet oriented socket programming whileI want to perform local connections. got a thread that does the sniffing via libpcap. And I would like that thread to send each captured packet to a second thread that will analyse the packetof the thread implementations is written in separate .h file.Or maybe there is a more effective method of exchanging data between threads

I am on Ubuntu 11.04 and using Libre Office 3.3.2 to compose new documents and am saving them using .doc, .ppt and .xls files. (due to having to share them with others who are on Windows systems)
I have a lot of doc files and I need to search for text INSIDE these files. I am perplexed with the fact that no search tool is able to search for text INSIDE these file types. "cat" can display them of course, but grep is not able to locate text INSIDE these file types. I even tried to save a .doc file as an .odt file, but no luck. The Applications>Accessories>Search for Files does not search INSIDE doc, xls or ppt with the option "Contains the text".
