I just finished upgrading the last of 3 machines from F10 to F12 using preupgrade (all i686). Except for a non-critical hplip issue, all went well with the first two machines upgraded 1 week and 3 days ago, but some python F10->F12 updates were missing on the third machine that I upgraded yesterday, leaving yum inoperable. Thanks to good yum error messages, I was able to resolve the problem (I think), but I thought I should post to check if mine is a unique or common problem, to enquire if it may have resulted from some of the python packages being in "update transit" in the repositories, and/or whether something like this can be avoided in future? Details follow:
Upgrade appeared to go well except for some dejavu font dependency issues (experienced on all three machines) and libcrypto.so.7 missing for eet-1.2.2-4... (third machine). However, there was a boot message that some python module (can't remember which) was not present for some nvidia requirement, although video driver worked fine. When testing yum: First it complained that libpython2.6.so.1.0 was not present. Since that module conflicted (identified by rpm) with various python 2.5.*f10 packages that that were still on board, I copied libpython2.6.so.1.0 (from a current f12 rpm) into /usr/lib manually. Second, yum complained that urlgrabber was not available, so rpm with the latest python-urlgrabber for f12 solved that.
Third, yum complained that pycurl was not available, so rpm with the latest python-pycurl solved that. Yum now works! and boot message is gone! I ran "yum install python-libs" to make sure that any necessary dependencies were met following my manual installation of libpython2.6.so.1.0, which resulted in a bunch of python dependencies being upgraded as a result.

In KDE I have no System Notifications, Kaffiene, Amarok2, Amarok and Xine immediately exit when opened without an error. If I try to open the System Settings/Multimedia or System Settings/Notifications control panels they also exit without an error. I have audio in other applications, MPlayer, Skype, VLC, Songbird, etc., as well as from the Konsole. I've tested Konsole audio using the published guidelines in the Audio HowTo, 'speaker-test' works fine for all users. In Yast2 I can configure and test the audio card without errors, but I am not able to get USB headphones working. I have been through the 'Check your multimedia problem in ten steps'. There are no errors or missing dependencies showing up. I've booted from the 11.2 Live CD and everything worked fine including KDE Notifications and application audio. I've tried deleting my .kde4 profile, this didn't fix the problem, and application and control panel behaviour remained the same with a clean profile.

I have a computer with 128 ko of RAM (a very old one). I installed yesterday ubuntu 8 because ubuntu 9 requires 512 ko of RAM and was very slow. Now, I have problems to update packages and to install every thing. I changed the sources.list because it seems that links are no more available according to the error messages. (I have put many adresses for ubuntu 9 because I think the kernel is the same not as the kernel for ubuntu 10). But new problems have occurred like "broken dependencies". Now I want to correct, and I don't know how? I'm still a beginner with this OS.

I have a very unusual [and most likely unsupported] upgrade path I need to take.
I have two servers, both Dell PE1800's that I need to upgrade.
One of them is a Fedora Core 4 (x86) box and the second is RHEL5 x86_64.
I need to do an in-place upgrade to CentOS 5.3 without having to reinstall from scratch and keeping my downtime to an absolute minimum. Each of these servers has about 10TB of data stored and I really don't want to have to reformat and restore from backps.
How can I do this?

I'm a network services rookie and I am seeing this error, but it doesn't seem to be effecting functionality. Nov 22 12:12:16 r01 nscd: nss_ldap: reconnected to LDAP server ldap://10.5.1.4 after 1 attempt This error is scattered through out my logs. We are authenticating this Red Hat server to another OpenLdap server. Everything seems to work just fine and we are not even using Kerberos as this is a render server. We set-up ldap right in the GUI, nothing fancy.
RHEL 5.4, Basic install, again, nothing fancy. LDAP does seem to be working fine and allows the right people to login to the machine. We have two of these machines running and both are configured exactly the same and getting the same errors.

I'm running debian testing on my laptop. This morning when I ran apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade, I was greeted by the following errors:

I've been trying all morning to update from a working 9.10 to 10.04 and unfortunately every time I try it blocks me.
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report.

A couple of days ago, I upgraded my Kubuntu to Lucid. In this phase, the system reported that it was impossible to upgrade samba-common, and the installation aborted on 90%. Nevertheless everything is working but KPakageKit, which reports:
"There are broken dependecies on your system. Please use an advanced package manage e.g. Synaptic or aptitude to resolve this situation."
Neither "sudo aptitude safe-upgrade" nor "sudo apt-get -f install" solved the problem:
omen@darkstar:~$ sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
[..]:
samba-common
kubuntu-desktop .....
So the problem is really samba-common.

I am trying to upgrade RH9 to F10. I have downloaded dvd iso image i386. The SHA1 integrity check passes. The installer fails media check due to "errors". I did an independent verification of the DVD and zero errors found. Download was from Fedora's own torrent, so files should be verified anyway. If I bypass the media check I get the message : Running anaconda 11.4.1.62 the Fedora system installer - please wait.....

I just upgraded to Debian Squeeze (from Lenny) and there are several errors occuring.
The first one is that whenever I want to use mplayer it gives me the following output:
Maybe that has to do with faulty drivers, I'm not sure yet.
What's bugging me a little bit more is whenever I start a shell like konsole or xterm it displays the following:
It roughly translates to:
A third problem is when I try to use something like mplayer or java and then try the tab completion I get yet another error.
Which would be:
So I get "bash: _get_comp_words_by_ref: command not found", however it's not like that with all of my applications. Tab completion after the command "vlc" for example works just fine.

I decided to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS from Ubuntu 9.10 earlier today. I started the upgrade process, after around 4 hours everything was starting to install. But then certain errors began to pop up. Soon after, the upgrade dialog exited because of too many errors (a screenshot is attached below with other documents).
Right now I have to back up by files and do a fresh reinstall.
Icons are all over the place, some have been deleted, and application menus are "scrambled". Nothing really seems to work except my web broswer, Opera, which isn't a Canonical Ubuntu application.
I have attached to screenshot of the upgrade dialog and the other documents the error dialog wanted me to attach.
