I just upgraded to fedora core 11. I need to change the permission of the html folder. The owner is currently set to root. Since there is no longer a root user (I just found out) it will not let my user account change the permissions in that directory from. How do you change directory permissions in fedora 11?

i am trying to write a script that does the following..1. checks if a directory exists2. changes permisssions of the directoryi have written a script but it returns a message to say that the specified directory does not exist (but it does).my question is how to i search the entire file system as directory could potenially be anywhere. would cd or su be of any use here.

after a fresh install of fedora 13 I was expecting a few niggles and here's one, I've googled and read man chmod and chown and there seems to be plenty of conflicting advice, oh yeah the problem, I installed a package called get_iplayer (allows downloading of bbc iplayer content) via yum, only thing is I can only run it as root whereas in f12 I could as a normal user. It's probably the simplest command to change permissions, also I can't find any info on what the different numbers mean (775 777 etc)

When I use Nautilus to access the partition, I am always asked for my root password. This is a little annoying. Is there anyway I can keep this from happening?
I have my Windows partition set up to auto mount with fstab. I can access it fine in the command line and launchers that I created with out the root password. I suppose I could do the same for this partition, but I would like to access it directly with Nautilus if it is possible.
I am having a few security issues with fedora15. they are like i cannot modify any folder in orher partitions of my HDD unless i am a root user. i have tried the GUI approach bt it doesnt help. there are more than a few hundred folders with thousands of files in total. tell me a way so that i can change permissions for one drive at once.

But when I shutdown Fedora and start up Ubuntu, I have to run the same chmod command again. How can I make read/write permissions endure between both distros?
I'm new to Ubuntu Linux but have many years on windows platform. Please can someone help me with how to change the following items.
No.1 I would like to change the HORRIBLE!! YAK!! brown background color behind the word Ubuntu in the start up screen when the machine loads up (before the login). I have located the image file for this which I have found to be: /usr/share/images/xsplash/bg_2560x1600. jpg but the OS says that root is the owner and that I don't have permission to change this. So how can I change this for a color I do like.
No.2 I would also like to change the login dialogue screen style. I know this is possible but again I'm fumbling to see how I can do this. I have tried with the start up manager but every attempt fails, the settings don't take. Once again I suspect permissions are at the bottom of the problem?
No.3 Would like to have a colorful splash screen image on boot up, I've managed to remove the old one (small white 3 ring ubuntu logo on black background) but havent been able to install or replace with a new one. Its been incredibly frustrating, I'm feel sure I'm missing something simple here. Wondering if its permissions yet again?

View 6 Replies View Relatedive started writing scripts to launch some of my programs, but am having mixed results. i am saving them all in the /bin folder (is this typical?). for about half of the scripts they run fine from the terminal home directoy, however for the other half i must " cd /bin" before i can run "sh script". im not quite sure why this is happening.

When I booted up this morning the contents of my Home directory are all showing up on my desktop, and there is no single Home folder. How did this change, and how can I change it back so that the Home folder is on my Desktop with the contents inside of *it*?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI set up an FTP server with two separate directories. One of them is mine, and the other one is shared (for anonymous ftp). The layout is like this.
/home/hallvor <---- this is my ftp directory where I keep my private files. I am the only user.
/home/ftp <---- this is the shared ftp directory with anonymous login.
Whenever I transfer files from my ftp directory to the public /home/ftp, I would like to: prevent anonymous users from deleting files in /home/ftp or uploading their own files to that directory (read only) What permissions must I set? I think this is all a bit confusing. I tried to chmod /home/ftp to 644 and change ownership to root, but that made it impossible to even log on anonymously.
This is on a customized Ubuntu 10.10 LiveCD. I have a directory which the default user "ubuntu" owns, and the permissions on the directory is 777. I'm unable to cd into the directory as ubuntu user. However as root user I'm able to access it. What could be the reason? I'm able to view the directory in nautilus.Note: I originally copied the folder over from an NTFS disk.

I have tried chmodding the connary/DEBIAN directory as so: sudo chmod -R 755 connary/DEBIAN but it does not seem to do anything.
if I do ls -la on a file, it would show the permissions of the file on the left side. I would like to do the same on a directory(ls -la directory) and have only one line printed out with the directory and it's permissions. But the result is the content of the directory and not the directory itself.
