Fedora :: Creative Ways To Find A "lost" File?

Jan 2, 2010

for several weeks now I have been looking for a particular file, probably (but not certain) a jpg, that I used for the label of a cd that I made in 2005. Since then I have migratedhrough numerous Fedora versions and from hard disk to hard disk, and now I have almost no recollection ofhat the filename is. In addition, there's a chance that some file data might have been lost when I copied from hard disk to hard disk. The file might even have been deleted (though I kind of doubt it). Can anyone suggest good ways to find it? I want to ideally find the exact same image because I'm trying to do a few more copies of the cd, and I think I used (gack) Windows labelmaker software when I did it back in 2005. Now I'm trying to redo it in Linux only. But I feel lame if I have to end up using a different image for the cd than the one I used before.

I've found some of the songs I was working on at that time, liner notes, etc., and I've looked through folders with files I thought were done at similar times, etc., etc., but short of running "find / -name '*.jpg'" and looking through each and every file I am wondering if there are other ways to locate it

Fedora Installation :: Two Ways Of Installing Nvidia Drivers In Fedora 12?

Nov 20, 2009

After searching online and in these forums I found two different ways of installing the Nvidia drivers in fedora 12. If you haven't yet installed the the repos then:

Code:
su
rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm
First way:
as su
(1)
yum --enablerepo=rp*g install kmod-nvidia.$(uname -m) xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686 xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.x86_64

[Code]...

I used the first way and everything seems to work fine. Compiz-fusion works good but i did have to add vga=795 to /boot/grub/grub.conf to get the graphical boot loader to work again. Should I have used the second method? What is the difference in these two ways? Most notably the second steps. Is one way better or preferred over the other? From my understanding you must do this because of the nouveau driver.

To make things faster at school, I'm now trying to do the same thing at home using WMWare virtualbox. Our task is to setup 2 file-based disks using 4 image files and loop-devices. I can create and mount and use and do whatever with them, but after restart they are gone. Also all physical volumes and volume groups I created are gone. I used /etc/fstab to automount them at startup, but it doesnt seem to work.

I looked though the applet selection screen, and I couldn't find the sound applet, the all-in-one power off/log out/switch user applet, or the email/chat applet. How do I get these applets back on my top panel?

Hardware :: Testdisk Fails To Find Lost Partition?

Jan 12, 2010

I resized my root partition yesterday to make it include the unused 28GB at the end of my drive, but something went wrong and now I can't mount it again.. I think this has to do with the computer coming with Vista preinstalled and the partitions not being aligned to cylinders. This is what the partition table looked like before the resize (according to fdisk):

Code:

Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xdec3533c

[code]....

None of the last two partition schemes works, when I try to mount sda6 I get an error saying that the XFS superblock contains an invalid magic number. I've tried running xfs_repair on it, but even though it found a few secondary superblocks it couldn't verify them. I've tried running testdisk with the "Cylinder boundary" option set to "no", but it would not find my root partition... The log from the search is here I don't really care about the other partitions, all I need is my old root partition so that I can copy all the important stuff to another drive and then start from scratch with a new partition table (and remove the recovery partition aswell since I don't need it).

Fedora Installation :: Simple Ways Install Software For A "Development" System?

Jul 11, 2009

In the old days, the installation of Fedora offered options like a "Development System" and showed software packages related to that purpose, which you could check or un-check. I gather that with FC 11, you install a basic system from the live Cd and, (assuming a fast internet connection) it's up to you to know what to add. Are there any short cuts or crutches that mimic the old way of doing things? Or is there a special "spin" of FC11 that is for software development?

Fedora Networking :: Find Out What File Is Being Downloaded From What IP?

I've got something or someone downloading from me, probably scraping, and i can't figure out WHAT is using all of my bandwidth, and WHERE it's coming from.I don't know what SERVICE its from (eg, is this an apache request, or DNS DOS), what FILES are being accessed (if any, eg apache requests/scrape), and what IP is requesting them.My apache logs isn't showing anything that makes me thing i'm being scrapped. I'm kinda stuck in a brain fart right now and can't remember how to track this down, but the long and short is that all of my band width is being consumed, and 1 of my CPU cores is staying maxed out ("top" says that it's the avahi service).I've shut off the following services 1 by 1 to see if any of them would cause a drop in network usage, and none of them did:

apache
samba
postfix
