Mar 29, 2010I am on Ubuntu 9.04. I have a Vista disc which I have slipstreamed some drivers onto. (Basically, you copy them into the "upgrades" or "updates" folder)
I have copied all the files from the Vista disc onto my local Ubuntu drive. I have copied in the new files.
Then, I used Brasero to burn from the local Ubuntu drive to a blank DVD.
So, I checked, and all the files are there.
But when I start up the computer, it does not boot. It boots straight into GRUB, then Ubuntu. Wheras, when I stick in the original Vista disc, it does boot.
How do I get the new disc to boot? It has, surely, exactly the same files as the original....

I did not know what choice to make when it came time to burn a cd....now I can't get back to those choices....I am trying to make a bootable cd to install in a sonic laptop without an operating system. If by downloading ubuntu on my c/drive have I changed my os in any way...I have a hp compaq desktop computer using windows os..I am on a network with my husband

Jun 12, 2010If I use Ubuntu's (10.4) Startup Disc Creator app to create Debian (Lenny) start up USB I just get (when using it on a separate machine) a black screen with the text "boot:" If I press Enter I get a pale blue screen but nothing else, some text if I press the TAB key, but it will do nothing. Is this because I use Ubuntu for a Debian OS or is there some other problem? I've noticed that the disc creator in Ubuntu only really likes Ubuntu related OSs. But since it recognised it when I created it I would have thought it'd work!

Oct 24, 2010Not sure if anyone uses floppy drives anymore much. I know that most machines don't come with them anymore unless you ask for one.One of my machines [Machine # 2] has a floppy and I have never had the occaision to use it under linux [opensuse 11.2 currently]. Until now that is! I have about 30 floppies that I need to transfer the data from. I am able to mount the floppy drive and take data off the currently inserted floppy, but if I want to insert another floppy and remove the data from it, I must unmount and remount the floppy everytime. There is an entry in fstab:
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto,user 0 0
and a mount point in media [/media/floppy] Is there something else I need to have in the fstab line for the floppy so that it will read automatically everytime I insert a disk?

I have been told to either do an emergency back up using the 10.04 live disk. I am not sure what to do when it comes to that. I have also heard I can just repair the boot file on the HDD. I don't know how to do that either. I wouldn't mind I fresh install but I do not want to lose any of my data.

Jan 1, 2011I have just installed 11.3 x64. The installation went fine and worked for the first few hours. I ran the online update tool, and now it cannot find grub unless the installation disc is inserted and I select the "boot from hard disc" option.
I have read about the problem of the root partition being back, but not sure that's it.
sda1 - swap
sda2 - /
sda3 - /home
There used to be a repair tool in the installation disks. I could not find that in this media. Is that still available?

Jan 13, 2011Newly installed Lucid and several programs to get it just the way I like it. I went to make a backup of the entire system with remastersys for the second time (first time was ok) but everytime it says iso file too big, which it is at 16gb plus. I have been through and double checked that my personnel files, pics, music, movies are all removed and my virtual machine. When checking with "Disk usage analyzer" it says I have 158.8GB free but when I check the home file system itself it says I have 150.1GB free. Note the missing 8.1GB. I believe this is the root of my inability to make a backup.

And with each output the name would show the date of the backup & time. Then there would be 5 backups each time before the oldest would get replaced. I found something that I think does what I need but every time I run it I get this message.

Apr 24, 2010I use ubuntu 9.04 and up until this week I could burn CDs using Brasero disc burner without incident. I have partially fixed the problem. I can now use brasero to burn data discs that have wave files for the songs, but when I try to make a audio disc I get this: "Track 1.wav" could not be handled by Gstreamer. I use synaptic and installed some more libs, but to no avail. Should I just install everything in Synaptic for Gstreamer?

Oct 1, 2010I have decided to remove Windows from my disk, but I want to keep my current install of Ubuntu.
One possibility that sprang to mind was to make an image out of my Ubuntu install.
Since I dual boot, the disk is numbered "SDA2" (extended) "SDA5" (root) and then there is Swap. (Windows is the first part of the disk)
One question sprang to mind:
If I make an image out of it, what happens to the numbers? Will there be any conflicts? Not to mention the question of which program would be best (and easiest to use, preferably with a GUI, since I want to save time, not learn code).
And if I would go for a binary dump to an external disk (to put it back when the destination disk is empty), would the same problems arise? Or would that bring even more problems, like the issue of the swap partition, which I would have to receate, since it wouldn't fit on the "dump disk"?
This is all because the whole thing sounds very similar to placing the ubuntu partition to the front of the disk, which, as I have been told, is not a good idea.

Aug 12, 2010Here is what I would like to pursue: I would aim to create a USB drive which a system can boot from if needed. However, this system would not be the generic Lucid 10.04 iso, it would have specific packages that my current system has. Also, it would start up and run with my current system settings if possible.
I did look into Reconstructor, but it doesn't appear that that would have the capibility of changing the default settings to match my current system's settings. Also, it looked like there wasn't a way to upload a list of current packages of my system (I would have to manually select each package, taking quite a while). So is there any way to make a bootable USB matching my current system? Or is reconstructor the closest thing to that kind of customiz-ability?

Aug 23, 2009I'm trying to add a scheduled full backup to the crontab file, but the full backup never completes; it always stops somewhre in the file system. I guess is b/c the os is updating those files or has them open. Apr 1, 2011Firstly I've never (successfully) upgraded before using update manager -d but I've only tried once. I'm on 10.10 at the moment but I want to make a full disk backup using Acronis and try out 11.04 beta 1 so if I can't boot (like with the 11.04 Alpha 3) I'm ok.
What I want to know is if I upgrade to beta 1 it will install new things and settings, if beta 2 is released and I upgrade to that (after having beta 1 installed) will it overwrite all the settings again? Or will I be able to spend time set beta 1 up nice how I want it (if it works) and just smoothly upgrade gradually to final 11.04 keeping it pretty much exactly how I want it?
Also with the software sources, I understand I need to disable the ones I manually added before updating from 10.10 then to re-enable them, but how do I re-enable them for Natty as they are currently for Maverick? Do I just change the word Maverick to Natty, or is it better to remove and re-add them for natty? And do the authentication keys need updating or are they ok? I don't really know a lot about the keys.
1 more thing (sorry) will an upgrade overwrite any settings I have e.g. etc/fstab, sudoers, things like that? I know when you upgrade it gives you an option for some things e.g. keep or replace, if I keep old settings from maverick does it matter? Or does 11.04 add new lines/things to these files if I choose replace?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm pretty new been using ubuntu as my only OS for couple months now and most of my time has been spent tweaking settings and I don't want to lose them, or do a clean install when 11.04 final is released as I won't ever be able to remember them all.
