View 5 RepliesAs part of a standard update from Update Mgr, I was proposed an upgrade from kernel 2.6.31.19 (pae) to 2.6.31.20 (again, pae). Installation went smoothly, as a number of similar upgrades before. Machine is a plain dual/boot (win7+karmic), no wubi.
Mandatory reboot after upgrade... grub... then freeze.
Deep freeze: blank screen, no HD activity.
None of the existing kernel flavors (2.6.31-17, 31-19, 31-20) is able to boot, either in pae, general or recovery mode. It's only BIOS sequence, grub, choice... frozen. Blank screen, no message whatsoever. (btw, win7 boot appears not affected)
Attempts so far:
* Following some hints here for similar situations, I checked my disk w/ gparted and found no issues.
* Partition's UUID is nicely set.
* Recovered Grub, as per its tutorial...
I'm attaching here my grub's config, from a script I've seen in multiple questions.
Code:
Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
Boot Info Summary:
=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in partition #5 for /boot/grub.....
I am loving the server, except for in the last couple of days the server has completely froze and I am unable to log in at the console nor am I able to connect toit via SSH. Once I force a shut down and restart the server, everything is fine. Where could I look to see what happen to the server? Is there a tool I can use?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a situation when vsftpd do not allow to get files from directories deeper than chrooted directory.
I can get from chrooted directory.
I can put to chrooted directory.
I can put to deeper than crooted directory.
I can list directories and files deeper than chrooted direcotry.
But I can not get files (process starts and hangs) from directories deeper than chrooted.
Firewalls on both sides (client and server) are set to log every in and out connection that do not -j ACCEPT. Log files are empty, so I assume nothing is blocked by firewalls.
Permissions for files and directories, I want to get, are set to 777.
I am still struggling to get non-www to www. At the moment I have following code to redirect from non-www to www. RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.hoteldealscatcher.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.hoteldealscatcher.com/$1 [R=301,L]It works totally fine for home page but not for other deep links, such as /city/Sydney.php, they are still going to non-www pages. What 's the best approach I could use to solve it
Is there a way to deep clean the supposedly "empty" areas of HDD. I've found "shred" and similar tools by googling, but they allow either deleting a file or complete wipeout of a HDD. What I'd like to do is clean up what's left of already deleted files (which can probably be still "undeleted") on a live HDD (with useful data, which doesn't need to be destroyed).

Whenever I mount/umount USB flash, conky disapears from display. It does not crash, it only falls into neverending sleep (process state: Sl+). When I send rehub signal (kill 1 {conky_pid}) conky happily wake up, reloads configuration and shows me what I want to see. I dont have anything USB realted in my monitor.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI`ve got a dual boot of win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. After I put the system to sleep in win7, it was unable to start the ethternet adapter back (Now after system boot, the lights around the ethernet port blink for a few times and then turn off. This repeats in a while). Now it is disabled in ubuntu too. Is there any way to start it again? It is a Realtek RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIs there a way I can do a "deep" renaming of files? For example, I can do this: rename 's/.JPG$/.jpg/' *.JPG to rename all files ending with ".JPG" to ".jpg", but this only works in the current directory. How can I make this recursive? There's not a flag (that I can see) that does this. Basically, I want to rename ALL files on my hard drive with an upper case JPG extention to make them have a lower case jpg extention.

View 1 Replies View RelatedA client has sent me an RHEL 5.1 box for me to do some work on, but it's not registered with Red Hat. This is causing me problems, because it's a minimal installation, and I need some more dev software. My immediate reaction was to install various bits (emacs, and so on) from my Centos 5(.0) DVD.The base RHEL system only had one (disabled) repo entry,so I added a yum DVD repo entry in yum.conf.d.
This looked good to start with, but it doesn't work. Something in RHEL's pirut/yum/rpm/whatever is getting confused, and can't work out what is/isn't installed.
Question - how do you maintain an unregistered RHEL box? Has RH done something to make life difficult? Is my problem simply that I'm using a Centos 5.0 DVD, instead of Centos 5.1? Am I stuck with downloading lots of rpms from the net and doing everything manually? I really don't want to do that.
I just installed Fedora 12. Now i've seen a few other threads but they seem to have all the conclusion that its the Nvidia drivers at fault. Well i have an ATI Mobility Radeon 3400 series. I can login, and navigate for a little bit, then it just randomly freezes. I've booted to both gnome and KDE, kde freezes almost immediately w/o letting me navigate much. Gnome takes a bit and then freezes on me. I managed to login once and go like 6 minutes then i thought it was worked out, rebooted and boom, froze up again. I can still move my mouse but can't click or use keyboard. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace doesn't work either .....
View 2 Replies View Relatedi've got a non-typical problem here. i've got kvm-ed freebsd (its not so important here) stored on a block device - /dev/sdb8. i wanted to install fedora rawhide there but first i thought it's a good idea to do some backup. so here we go dd if=/dev/sdb8 of=freebsd.img bs=4k
theoretically, dd should do the thing without saying a word, but it doesn't. every time it stops after reaching 16GB filesize (partition is about 35GB) and completely locks the system (only reset helps).the dump worked only once, but when i tried to compress this big image 7z got stucked too and the system froze . the problem occurs when copying to the same drive or to different drive. i've got a partial kerneloops logs, but so far i haven't found the answer.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a database server running RHEL 5.1 32 bit that suffered some catastrophic failures about 6 months ago. We were able to patch it back together and keep it running, but now the manufacturing site it supports is going to shut down for two weeks and I would like to replace it permenantly. Does anyone have any guidance for that sort of thing? I'd like to have the new server up and running before hand, basically changing the hostname/ip and restoring the databases only on conversion day. I've done this in the past with HP UX - Red Hat conversions, but this is my first red hat to red hat move. Any advice or shortcuts?I forgot to add the other wrinkle. The new server will be running 64bit linux.
