Red Hat / Fedora :: How To Detect System Installed Drive In Preboot
Jan 22, 2010
I have a RHEL 5 installed. I boot using a Linux preboot CD and take my machine into preboot. Now, in preboot, how should I detect that on which drive ( e.g. sda1/2or hda1/2 etc ) my RHEL5 resides?

I got a Western Digital 500GB SATA drive, installed Vista on it no problems and made sure to leave about 120gb of unallocated space when setting up the drive. Went to install F12 via the live CD and it says no drive was detected. If I take the live CD out then it boots into Vista no problems so the drive is definitely connected OK.
I was using the 64-bit version of the live CD so I downloaded the 32-bit version but I have the same problem! The motherboard is an Asus P5QPL-AM if that makes a difference.

I am installing Fedora 15 for the first time - Fedora-15-x86_64-Live-KDE.iso. I used LiveUSBCreator to copy to a memory stick.
I boot OK and start the install process and choose "Basic Devices" but it does not appear to detect my only hard drive (SSD). All it detects is the USB memory stick that I booted from.
I have Windows 7 on my disk. There is about 50GB free space which I planned to use for Fedora.

I just installed Fedora 12 from a DVD . The process completed without incident.
I then inserted a DVD into my internal drive and nothing happened.
I then logged out and logged in again as root, and tried again-same result; nothing!
Could it have something to do with the new PolicyKit? I didn't have this problem with Fedora 11.

My father installed Kubuntu to his external hard drive to try it out, however, it is running extremely slowly. It takes a good minute and a half to boot to the Plasma desktop and it even seems to run faster off of the LiveCD.His system easily meets the specifications to run Kubuntu (4 gigs of RAM, decent NVIDIA graphics card) yet it slows to a crawl immediately upon booting. Does anyone know how to fix this? The hard drive is a Western Digital MyBook, 475GB model.

I am trying to decide on which Linux distribution to use for Pre boot authentication software (Intel, AMD processors).
My requirements: PBA with minimal GUI; STABLE distro; minimal OS size; support for USB, mouse, key board and PC card to access internet; Intel, AMD processors.
Questions:
1. Which Distro the experts recommend?
2. Would appreciate any other pointers from experienced PBA developers.

I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal on a External HDD (320GB Samsung S2). Worked like a charm. Bit slow to boot up and load programs, but after a while, works great. I installed it on the external HDD for one purpose: Work anywhere with Ubuntu, no matter which computer I use. I was thinking that was impossible, but I've tested thru several platforms (3 Notebooks, 2 netbooks, all Intel and one AMD Desktop). All worked flawlessly (32 Bits PAE activated and no matter how many cores are active, just works), BUT the themes. For no apparent reason, themes works on the computer I've installed Ubuntu on the HDD. It has his own Internal HDD with Windows 7 and two NTFS partitions.
Themes are stuck to the default boring-white from Gnome. I can only change the window controls. Compiz works, Wireless works, video works, sound works, filesystem works, system works - themes fail. Feels like I've hit my feet's little finger on a chair. P.S.: Ext. HDD is partitioned like this: 300GB FAT32 (it's my pop's HDD, he wants it this way), 18GB EXT4, 2GB Swap.

I have a Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01) wireless card. I installed these packages:
broadcom-wl-5.10.91.9.3-1.fc12.noarch
akmod-wl-5.10.91.9.3-3.fc12.6.x86_64
kmod-wl-2.6.31.6-145.fc12.x86_64-5.10.91.9.3-3.fc12.8.x86_64
[code]....
uname -a says:
Linux boz.alafkhar 2.6.31.6-145.fc12.x86_64 #1 SMP Sat Nov 21 15:57:45 EST 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
and:
# lsmod | grep wl
wl 1278432 0
lib80211 6436 2 lib80211_crypt_tkip,wl
[code]....
My networkmanager understands that the card is installed. But it can not find any network. Also iwlist scan gives me no result. I did not have this problem on earlier fedora releases. Recently I upgraded to F12 from F11. I should mention that I have another USB DLink wireless card and when I plug it, everything works fine with that card. I also tested wl_apsta driver using fw-cutter. I did not work neither.

Ive installed fc11 on my laptop (IBM lenovo R400). My work has a proxy which we must go through. I have set the proxy addresses in System Settings->Network Settings-> proxy. I have also run export [URL].. All seems to be ok, yum works from the command line, konquer goes out to the net just fine. However firefox wont connect to the internet no matter. The only way at the moment is to manually set the proxy in firefox. This doesnt seem right? Surely FF should pick up the system proxy? Does anyone have any ideas about this one?

I have a new F12 install, and my syslog is filling up with messages about USB. I have 2 USB devices plugged in directly to the mobo (bluetooth keyboard receiver, touchscreen), and it keeps redetecting them and then disabling the port for some reason.
A small sample of what keeps on repeating:

I added a new drive to an existing system and installed F15 on the new drive, and all was well. I copied what I needed from the old drive and removed it from the system. Now it won't boot. It drops to a shell with the message.
Code:
ACPI: Expecting a [Reference] package element, found type 0
I don't know if that's relevant, but dmesg reveals that it can't find the root device:
Code:
dracut: inactive '/dev/vg_server100/lv_swap' [9.81 GiB] inherit
dracut: inactive '/dev/vg_server100/lv_home' [1.76 TiB] inherit
dracut: inactive '/dev/vg_server100/lv_root' [50.00 GiB] inherit
dracut: inactive '/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00' [1.13 TiB] inherit
dracut: inactive '/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01' [1.94 GiB] inherit
dracut: Volume group "vg_server1" not found
dracut: Skipping volume group vg_server1
dracut: Warning: No root device "block:/dev/mapper/vg_server100-lv_root" found
dracut: Warning: LVM vg_server1/lv_swap not found
Server1 was the volume group on the drive that was removed. I thought I had removed that volume group in the disk manager. Server100 is the new volume group. In the shell, I can mount the root partition and look at its contents. It all seems to be there, but the /boot directory is empty. How I can get this system to boot up normally?
I discovered this entry in my /etc/fstab file:
Code:
UUID=... /boot ext4 defaults 1 2
I guess that's the part that's really missing? How I would go about recovering it? The boot partition is in tact, and so is the root partition. So I'm still wondering why dracut thinks there is no root device.

How does one access a Virtual Box installed Fedora system? I'd like to be able to ssh into this system (locally) but I've no idea how to do this. There is an ip address of 10.0.2.15. Ping doesn't work (ping 10.0.2.15). Should I just go ahead and assign a 192. address to this box before I go any further? It would seem that at this point the system isn't actually a part of my local network and I don't imagine it would be unless it has a 192 address.

I installed Fedora with some useful programs for my job. I would like to make a live cd (or dvd) of my system (with programs and repositories list), so I can install it to 5 other computers I have.I found revisor but I think it's not what I'm searching. In Ubuntu I was using Remastersys and that's what I want to do of my system.Since I'm new, if it has a graphical interface, it would be nice. If not, then just explain the terminal commands.

I recently installed Fedora 13 on an 80 gigabyte hard drive, and it split the space in two, giving root and the normal partition both 36 gigabytes. I need at least 60 gig or more for my home partition. What can I do to shrink the root one? I currently do not have accsess to the install media or a rescue disk.

My monitor is the hp pavilion f1703. The 9.10 only offers 2 resolutions 800 x 600 (4:3) and 640 x 480 (4:3)The native screen resolution is 1280 x 1024 @ 60Hz which is obviously not offered. I did my homework and followed this guide found here http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-adj...on-ubuntu.htmlall i got was 'xrandr:cannot find mode 1280x1024' when i try to set the resolution manuallyThe weird thing is ubuntu 8.10 detects my monitor native screen resolution just fine.

It does not show up in PCmanFM, like my USB-harddrive, but I do have a /dev/fd0, so I tried:sudo mount /dev/fd0 /mntand then it complains about the file system not being specified, so I dosudo mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mntbut to no avail.

I have a Toshiba Dynabook 2010 laptop and I want to install DSL linux on it.The problem is when I boot with DSL Linux there is no hard drive named /dev/hda1 and fdisk -l command does not return. How can I overcome this problem? And I could only boot into DSL if I use the nofstab as a kernel parameter.when I boot with fstab then kernel panic will occur.
I again checked, now there is a /dev/hda but my hda should contain two ext3 partitions. But the problem is the kernel doesn't recognize them.I got debian in my Had disk too.The problem is debian can recognize these two partitions.
