CentOS 5 Networking :: NIC Drops Packets / But Reports No Errors
Jul 24, 2009
I've got an odd one, running the CentOS 5.3 kernel, I'm experiencing lost packets on one of the two NICs when tested with ping. In this particular case, it's the internal NIC that causes the problem, pings from the CentOS machine to the public network over the external NIC never loses packets.(internet)<-->CentOS<--> (LAN) <--> desktop
- CentOS can ping the internet with no packet loss
- CentOS loses packets when pinging the desktop(s)
- Desktops lose packets when pinging the CentOS box
- Taking the LAN switch out of the equation still results in lost packets
- When the LAN NIC on the CentOS box "acts up", all desktops start losing packets
I've swapped out the NIC a few times for different makes/models, and I'm still getting lost packets to/from the internal network. So, I'm thinking that there's something squirrely going on higher up in the network stack. But evidently, not enough to log anything to the console or into the log files. At the moment, I'm leaning towards it being an issue with the nForce 750a SLI chipset. But it's odd that it only affects the LAN card and not the WAN card. I've even swapped the positions of the two NICs, and the problem persists on the LAN card. The other possibility is that iptables is eating packets silently, but in a random fashion.

Pinging out from my netbook (over wifi, to any host) gets ~0% packet loss. Pinging into it (from any host) gets about 50% packet loss.
The router is a Dlink-DIR615 (rev d, running DD-WRT v24-sp2) but all other hosts on it ping eachother fine. I've tried changing routing, disabling IPv6, using older kernels and using wicd, all with no luck. The wireless connections is at 100% most of the time. This could be a new problem with Maverick, but I may not have noticed it before. I believe this is causing web browsing to be really slow and causing SSH timeouts.
I haven't tried madwifi drivers or nsidwrapper yet.
Edit: just booted into Windows and it has the same problem. Could it be a hardware issue? Also tried with a static IP, with no change.
Strangely, a normal ping gets 50% packet loss, but ping -A gets < 1% loss.
Edit 2: no packet loss at all on eth0.

I have a system running 11.04 and it is dropping packets on the hardwired ethernet interface to other systems on the LAN, only in the inbound direction. It drops packets every 5 seconds. I verified this with iperf. Outbound packets pass with no problems. The network card in this system is a Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5752

I have just installed a fresh copy of CentOS 5.3 and from the get-go, the NIC started dropping packets like crazy. I even closed the port on the switch,. moved the cable to a different port,. All yield the same "dropping packets" behavior. Zero on the errors, just dropping packets. Should I stick a diff nic instead?

I have one laptop running under Windows and another under Linux. I can access and surf the internet on both computers. But the Linux laptop is painfully slow.
If I ping my gateway the Windows lappy does in in 1 ms but the Linux in 20ms. iwconfig reports errors under Rx invalid crypt, tx excessive retries and huge numbers under invalid misc, and nothing on the rest.
The router is encrypted with WEP and iwconfig reports the correct key.

I have had this issue for a while on my centos 5.4 dedicated server with 1and1. If I reboot my system, my connection starts and then drops in about 10 seconds after the system has booted.I connected through the serial console and noticed there was only one thing that seemed suspicious while booting. named could not start for some reason. So my question is - are these 2 problems related? If not, what could be the reason for my connection to drop?At the moment the only way of getting the connection back up is by running dhclient. This works until the next reboot.

i have a linux server runnig oracle applications. i need to access this server from putty using ssh through internet. i did by registering my static ip with the dnydns.org and i am able to connect to the server. but now there is no security to authenticate any user as any one knowing the password can login to it.
i thought of configuring the firewall of linux server but the client ip`s are not static and they change continiously. so thought of keeping one more pc between the server and the router which will do the work of authenticating. but i am confuse as how to configure it to allow the packets coming from the internet after authenticating and to by pass the packets generated from internal LAN?

I got the following task from my boss. I have to find out if there is some alternative tool for create reports from Squid except SARG. Now, we use SARG, but my boss told to me, that the main problem of SARG is, that SARG generate huge amount files, which cause problems during migration our servers. He told to me the following condition for change of current tool (SARG):
* standard package of Debian
* generate less amount of files, optimal is to save reports to the database
So I would like to ask you if you know about some tool (I can not find some by google)... and the best would be if you told to me some practical experiences.

I think i've discoverd an issue on our linux servers. We have developed an in house application that send and recieves a large volume of udp data. I'm see alot of errors for udp when I run a "netstat -us". Could the recieve buffer be too small and if so, how do it change it. What is the default size on centos 5?
kernal = 2.6.18-53.1.14.el5PAE #1 SMP Wed Mar 5 12:07:47 EST 2008 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
"netstat -us" output
Udp:
197961014 packets received
1474 packets to unknown port received.
49340800 packet receive errors
25890918 packets sent

I have a hardware device with two ethernet ports, eth0 and eth1 running Centos 5. Basically my goal is to forward packets from eth0->eth1 and eth1->eth0 as well as get a copy of these packets for analysis. If I set IP routing to do the forwarding then I won't get a copy of the packets for analysis.

When I installed Cent before I got my logwatch messages sent to me. for somreason this new server I built I am not getting them. can mail off the server and there is no mail in the Q or in root. I also put in a .forward file in my root to mail to my external account and it works fine. I get mail from fail2ban and denyhosts but not the logwatch.Thoughts on what I could be missing? I check the link and the files are all there. I changed the config file to give me a High level of detail. Thats about it. If I use the command line for logwatch it sends mail fine. logwatch --detail high --logfile messages --mailto yourname@domain.com

A strange problem has surfaced with my CentOS 5.5 Rackspace Cloud Server. I was doing OK until today. For some strange reason, whenever I login to the server, using ssh and pub/priv key authorization, or password authorization for that matter, the letter E (that's an uppercase 'e') does not echo at the prompt line, it just beeps like an error. At the login prompt, before signing in, the letter E is echoed to the terminal window. I'm using an iMac, OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and the standard Mac terminal application.
This behavior does not occur when using the terminal app locally, i.e., logged into the iMac, and all other applications on the Mac are OK with 'E's. To further test the issue, I used the Java console app that Rackspace provides through a browser (I use Firefox, latest revision). Before logging in, the login prompt will accept and echo 'E'. As soon as I authenticate and get to a system prompt, anytime I press a Shift-e, I get a beep and no echo to the terminal command line. It doesn't matter who I login as, root or another user.
To further confuse things, if I start up an instance of nano in that very same terminal window, nano accepts and echoes the 'E'! Using nano, I've created a short bash script file:
#!/bin/bash
echo "ABCDEFG"
and it echoes properly when run.
Any clues as to where I might look to resolve this bizarre behavior?
My getinfo.sh system specs are here here.

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Inspiron E1505 and I am having problems with my wireless. It is a Broadcom B43xx series wireless card. I have the restricted drivers installed but I have trouble with it maintaining a constant connection. I attend a college where in order to connect to the wi-fi you need to have their certificates installed. The wireless certificates are installed and I'm telling Ubuntu to use it in order to connect but it drops in and out. I will be connected for a minute or two but then it will randomly drop out on me. I know its not my wireless hardware because any other wireless that I connect to off campus works perfectly fine. Any ideas on how to get this to work correctly?
I hate to bring this OS up but my Windows 7 connects perfectly. (On the same laptop. I triple boot: Ubuntu, Windows 7 [gaming OS] and Backtrack4 )If it helps any the wireless AP uses WPA2-Enterprise, PEAP, and MSCHAPv2 authentication, and the CA certificate (which I have selected to use), plus my user name and password.

I just performed a clean install on a desktop (older IBEX model) that is connected directly to a Cicso router; this is a DSL service. I configured the Network during the install, and all went well, the installation script downloaded many software modules, I was able to set up my mail accounts, etc. Now, if I suspend this machine and log back on I notice that I am no longer connected to the Network. Clicking on the Network icon brings up the configuration pane, and the original network appears to be there, but I cannot figure out how to make it reconnect without rebooting.

We have three computers at home. I have the only one running Linux, the other two are running Windows XP and using Belkin Wireless G USB Adapters. I started using Linux around November, and used a powerline ethernet cable. (It consists of two parts. One part you plug into your router and the power socket beside it, and the other you plug into your computer and the power socket beside that. It then uses the power lines as a network, and acts like a normal ethernet cable. I used the 'Auto eth0' connection without much problem). Back then, my internet would stop working once every few hours but only for firefox. Other programs such as bittorrent and Spotify continued working.
However, since I got back from holiday a few days ago the situation's worse. The internet regularly pauses (every few minutes, including spotify and msn) for about 30 seconds, and then comes back. Downloads are not cancelled, as they are when I am disconnecting from the internet, they merely seem to pause. The other two computers in our house don't have this problem, and I have tried the wireless adapter, yet it seems to pause at the same times as the wired connection. I know that it too used to work back in November.

I got a new low power file server (Atom 330 with ion), but didn't enjoy it since.
I installed Ubuntu server 9.10 64bit.
I randomly experience connection drops. As I'm installing and testing, there are lots of ssh windows open, I transfer much data using scp from my laptop to the server (all connected to wired lan).
Connection drops are as follows: ssh windows terminate with "connection reset by peer", but not always all the ssh windows terminate. For example, I edited a mediatomb config using nano, that stayed open even with scp and all other ssh windows cut.
I also have apache2 installed because I'm running urd (a usenet download tool). It seems that when I start the deamon, connection drops. So I killed apache2 to try out but that didn't solve the problem.
I left ping run all the time, and the server is pinging back all the time, which is really strange as I thought that a connection drop means the whole network interface going down.
When this drop occurs, I have to wait 2 minutes until I can ssh back into the server.
I also installed mediatomb, but it isn't really fun to stream a video to my ps3 as it always hangs after 5 to 10 minutes.

I was having terribly slow internet speed with my wireless setup. I followed someone's advice and now my internet speed is flying. However, now I lose connection a lot - almost once every few minutes. Is there any reason for the changes listed below to make me lose connection so easily?
SETUP:
Ubuntu 910 - 64Bit
Wireless Router: WRT160N
Wireless Card: PCI Asus PCE N13
Changes that improved speed, but killed stability:
Radio Band frequency should be 20 MHZ,
standard channel change to 11
advanced wireless settings should be Beacon Interval 2306
Rts thres = 2307
Disable the Security easy setup*option.
Uncheck the Block Anonymous Internet Requests & reduce the MTU size to* 1400
